The road is long
With many a winding turn
That leads us to who knows where
Who knows where
He walked up and down the spacious waiting room. It has been five hours and no news had come from inside. The blinds of the operation theatre were completely down and no one was there whom he could ask about his condition.
He didn't know why he had gone there tonight. All he knew that he couldn't get sleep and decided to take a walk. A long scream from a nearby building had kicked up his army instincts and he had gone in. To see.. this. He had checked the bottle after they had taken him. potassium cyanide. He didn't know what made him do it, but he had a good inkling. His mind went back to him. He had been his teacher, his mentor, his brother, and the stealer of the girl he loved. Still he respected him, more than he could imagine.
But I'm strong
Strong enough to carry on
He ain't heavy, he's my brother.
And he knew what to do for him. Whether he was dead or alive, he didn't know.. but he had to do it. He went to find the nearest payphone.
So on we go
His welfare is of my concern
No burden is he, to bear
We'll get there
For I know
He would not encumber me
He ain't heavy, he's my brother
'Hi. Its me'
Silence.
'Anything wrong?'
'You might want to come to Belle Vue Hospital now.'
'Why? Are you in danger?'
'No. But someone is.'
'Who?'
'Him.'
'Him who?'
'Him. Captain Rajveer.'
Silence
Silence
'Oh.'
Click.
Disconnected.
And the load
doesn't weigh me down at all
he ain't heavy, he's my brother.
he ain't heavy, he's my brother.
He turned back to a hand on his shoulder. It was a nurse. Then he noticed, the door of the operation theatre was open, and the flashes were up again. He made to run forward but the nurse called him back.
'Excuse me Mr.-'
'Huda.' He supplied.
'Yes. Well, how do you know Captain Rajveer?'
He ain't heavy, he's my brother
'He's.. family.'
'Oh.'
'Is he alright? Is he going to be fine?'
'I'm sorry sir. I'm afraid no.'
'What?'
'You see, the cyanide he had swallowed was very powerful. He would have died if you hadn't called the ambulance at the right time. We have taken out most of the cyanide from his system.'
'So he's going to be fine right?'
'Well.. you see, a bit of cyanide which had reached his lungs and liver could not be taken out. His breathing is shallow and his liver is slowly deteriorating. I'm sorry sir. He doesn't have much longer to live.'
If I'm laden at all
I'm laden with sadness
That everyone's heart
Isn't filled with the gladness
He turned away. He still couldn't process what he has just heard. He didn't have the courage to turn back and ask her how long the Captain has got to live. But the nurse understood, because she called after him as he turned away.
'Two weeks sir. Two weeks at the most.'
He ain't heavy, he's my brother.
