Last friday, west bengal has witnessed another brutal gang-rape nd murder incident. She was a very meritorious nd very social-aware student of graduation 2nd year. Apart from education, she was also with social activities like-woman education, environment protection, child abuse fight and so on. She was eye-candy of everyone of her area. Had huge dreams in her eyes, all are suddenly put off by some local goons, who hit her first, gangraped(by 4-5) in her senseless condition, then killed her by bifurcating her lower limbs. Yes, they did all these with her. All local news channels, news papers are againg voicing on this matter. But what for? Within 2 days they will be busy 4 covering another story. We will also forget the news, but her family nd near ones have lost, which can't be compensate, never. I had known her personally, though we r not from same locality. We met in a social function 3 yrs back. She once told me" Didi after graduation I will come to u, plz help me out, I want to be self-dependant". I promised her but did not get that chance. Is it the destiny of every fighter?

First of all, applaud and thank you for the post. Why you chose IF over FB...I can well understand. My heartfelt condolence to the victim and family. May God give them the much needed strength, and to you too dear...when news stories of girls who are just somebody haunts us like anything..it must be traumatizing, to take it for someone with an acquaintance.

Yes, the execution of law and order should be more strict, Yes, the legal system should be more prompt, Yes, Girls needs to be more careful...these measure will surely help reducing the frequency of occurrence...but as far as the eradication of this curse is concerned, I think we need something more.

Yes, the executive, judicial and legislative needs to have changes needed...but the most importantly what needs to be changed is the cultural understanding which still militates against justice. Can a society which nurtures female foeticide can ever be a place ensuring respect to women... as parents we don't respect our daughters...shameful but true...parenting plays a key role.. ..a boy who witnesses his sister enduring a second citizen treatment while he enjoys all the perk...will he ever respect his sister, when his parents are not respecting her...NO...neither his sister nor others. Shamefully unfortunate ...but there are parts (remote mainly)..where rape is seen symbolic to celebration of manhood.
And an added persistent fallacy...that a person either drunk or dressed in a certain way must take some responsibility of the attacker...we need to grasp this fact that a person may be walking naked on the streets, still don't ensures the right to rape him/her.Part of a problem is the believe that rape is sexual assault, indeed it is but it's not all about sex...it's also a violation of a person's right to negate and it play a pivotal role in leaving a permanent scar to the victim as well.

I'm so ashamed that in one such cases one of the accused is from my state BIhar, and in order to rescue himself fled to his village where his mother hid him from police..though he was caught later but my point is as long as mothers will keep attempting to save their sons..no daughter will be safe

P.S. My post is strictly in reference to India

Thank you for sharing San.
When will these atrocities stop ...I don't know. If just hearing about it leaves us so disturbed, I shudder to think about what the victim went through. My heartfelt condolence to the victim and her family.

@Aish...agree with you POV.

The problem is apathy also...most of us are happy in our own little world not realizing that we live in the same glass houses too.

Only a fraction of these cases are reported in the media...there is an outrage, marches etc..the media covers it till the next sensational story scam/political visits/celebrity events follow and the issue is swept under the rug. However, I am glad that the media has atleast raised public awareness to an extent...

The thinking of every woman...mothers, mother-in-laws, sisters, wives, girl friends, women-professionals et al needs to change to pro-women first.
