First of all, applaud and thank you for the post. Why you chose IF over FB...I can well understand. My heartfelt condolence to the victim and family. May God give them the much needed strength, and to you too dear...when news stories of girls who are just somebody haunts us like anything..it must be traumatizing, to take it for someone with an acquaintance.
Yes, the execution of law and order should be more strict, Yes, the legal system should be more prompt, Yes, Girls needs to be more careful...these measure will surely help reducing the frequency of occurrence...but as far as the eradication of this curse is concerned, I think we need something more.
Yes, the executive, judicial and legislative needs to have changes needed...but the most importantly what needs to be changed is the cultural understanding which still militates against justice. Can a society which nurtures female foeticide can ever be a place ensuring respect to women... as parents we don't respect our daughters...shameful but true...parenting plays a key role.. ..a boy who witnesses his sister enduring a second citizen treatment while he enjoys all the perk...will he ever respect his sister, when his parents are not respecting her...NO...neither his sister nor others. Shamefully unfortunate ...but there are parts (remote mainly)..where rape is seen symbolic to celebration of manhood.
And an added persistent fallacy...that a person either drunk or dressed in a certain way must take some responsibility of the attacker...we need to grasp this fact that a person may be walking naked on the streets, still don't ensures the right to rape him/her.Part of a problem is the believe that rape is sexual assault, indeed it is but it's not all about sex...it's also a violation of a person's right to negate and it play a pivotal role in leaving a permanent scar to the victim as well.
I'm so ashamed that in one such cases one of the accused is from my state BIhar, and in order to rescue himself fled to his village where his mother hid him from police..though he was caught later but my point is as long as mothers will keep attempting to save their sons..no daughter will be safe
P.S. My post is strictly in reference to India
