Hello everyone...I apologize for the delay in the update. I have been really busy with college and my job. I will try my best to update ASAP, but I am considering handing over this fanfic to someone else to continue. If you are interested, please message me.
The next morning, Naku had a few hours before Dutta. Although he was taking care of his work from home, he constantly found himself staring at the entrance rather than paying attention to his work. Sudharshan was trying to explain some figures to him but noticed that he did not have Dutta's attention.
Sudharshan: Bhao!
Dutta finally turned towards Sudharshan.
Sudharshan: What's the matter? Why are you staring at the entrance?
Dutta: I was just wondering when Naku was going to come back. I didn't see her in the morning.
Sudharshan: Why do you care? We are putting up with her for Kaka Babu?
Sudharshan realized that he made a huge mistake when Dutta's expression quickly transformed into a murderous one. Sudharshan was immediately shaking in front of Dutta, who had gotten up from his seat and stood right in front of Dutta.
Dutta: This was the first and last time that you will say such thing. I will explain this to you only once; Naku means everything to me. I am not protecting her because of Kaka Babu: I am protecting her because without her I do not exist. I am letting you go this one time because you are my sister's husband, if it was someone else, I'd slit his throat.
Sudharshan: I'm sorry. I won't say anything like that again. I'll leave you alone.
As soon as Sudharshan left, Madhu approached her brother with a huge smile.
Madhu: I had no idea that my bhabhi had this effect on my brother
Dutta: Yeah, I kind of realized that recently. I don't know what is happening to me, I can't focus on anything. I just want her in front of me all the time. I swear, if she does not get home soon, I am going to lose it.
It was as if Naku had heard him because she walked in the moment those words left his mouth. Dutta couldn't hold back his enlightenment at seeing Naku safe and sound in front of him. However, his grin was immediately replaced by a frown when Shivum followed Naku into the house. In a split second, Dutta headed towards Shivum to give him a piece of his mind but Naku stopped him midway.
Dutta: Get out of my way Naku. How dare he come here after what he put you through?
Naku: Because I told him to come here.
Dutta: What?
Naku: Shivum apologized to Kaka Babu, and he's been working with me all day. My bike broke down, so he offered to give me a ride and collect some files.
Dutta: You're giving him another chance?
Naku: He sincerely asked for another chance, and I am willing to take a leap of faith.
Dutta: Why? After all he's done to you.
Naku: Sorry to say, but you put me through worse, yet I gave you another chance. Shivum doesn't even come close to that.
Dutta had no argument for Naku's statement. She was absolutely right. He did not press onto this issue any further and headed towards his room. Naku then turned towards Shivum.
Naku: Wait here…I'll get the files.
As soon as Naku left, Shivum approached Madhu.
Shivum: I uh…I umm…I wanted to uhhh
Madhu: You're welcome.
Shivum was somewhat surprised when Madhu gave him the answer he was looking for.
Madhu: You and my brother are alike in many ways. Neither one of you is good at apologizing or expressing gratitude, but it's okay. You're still a good person.
Shivum felt his heart flutter at Madhu's comment. This was the first time that he was so affected by a comment from a girl.
Madhu: Anyways, I apologize on my brother's behalf. He's just madly in love with my bhabhi and is very protective of her.
Shivum: You don't have to apologize…I would probably react in the same way.
Naku had returned with the files and handed them to Shivum. Throughout the day, she sincerely helped Shivum manage the business. He did not sense any grudges or resentment from her despite what he's done to her in the past. The more time he spent with her, he came to respect her even more. He better understood why his parents trusted her so much. She looked out for him and made sure that he was treated with respect by their colleagues. He was gradually understanding what Madhu was trying to explain to him the other night.
Naku: Here are the files. Make sure you look through them before the meeting. Tomorrow, I want you to represent us.
Shivum: But…
Naku: You can do it. I'll be there in case you need me, but both your father and I are sure that you can handle it. You did really well today and your parents are really proud of you. Now you should get home soon, rumor has it that your mother made your favorite dishes today for dinner.
Shivum had to admit—he liked the sisterly vibe that he got from Naku. He left Naku with a thanks and quickly snuch a nod of gratitude towards Madhu. After Shivum had left, Naku headed towards Sethji's room. There she found Dutta sitting by Sethji's bedside talking to him.
Dutta: I'm sorry for what you and your sister had to go through. I hate to see the two of you in this state. Your sister was right, though, I don't deserve a second chance after what I did. Sometimes I think I am too selfish. After what I put Naku through, I should leave her alone and stay out of her life. The problem is that I can't. I am too selfish to let go of her. I can't imagine a life without her. I just want to make up for everything I did and give her everything she deserves. I always want to see her happy and smiling, but I need your help. I need you to come back to us—to your sister. You would always say that you would look after her, and this is the perfect time. Please Sethji, just wake up…give me a sign that everything will be okay.
Just then, Dutta felt Sethji's fingers brush his hand. For a moment, he froze in his chair, but he quickly snapped out of it and called the nurse. Naku was worried when she heard Dutta screaming for the nurse for a moment.
Naku: What happened?
Dutta: I think Sethji moved his hand.
The nurse arrived immediately and examined Sethji. His vitals were stable and she contacted the doctor immediately. After examining Sethji, the doctor stepped into the corridor where the entire family had gathered.
Doctor: This is a good sign. It seems as if Sethji might be gradually coming out of the coma. Though it may take time, this is progress. I encourage you to continue talking to him as much as possible. It seems as if his subconscious is responding to you.
Naku was overwhelmed by news. She couldn't hold back her tears and she felt her knees go weak. Dutta picked up on this immediately and put his arm around her shoulders to give her support. Aayi Saheb then calmed Naku and told her to be happy.
For the remainder of the evening, Naku stayed by Sethji's side. She refused to leave for a minute. Later at night, Dutta went to Sethji's rooming, hoping to convince Naku to get some sleep. When he entered he noticed that Naku had fallen asleep with her head placed on Sethji's bed. He quietly released the grasp she had on her brother's hand and gently picked her up, carrying her to her room.
For the next couple of weeks, Baji, Kaya, Dutta, Madhu, Aayi Saheb, and Naku would take turns talking to Sethji. Day by day he was responding more and more. Everyone was waiting for the moment when he would open his eyes. Surprisingly, Shivum came to the house to pay a visit to Sethji. This time Dutta welcomed him and lead him to Sethji's room.
Shivum: Hi…I know you don't know me, but I am Shivum. I work with your sister, and I used to bully her. I probably deserve a beating from you, but you can't do that until you wake up. You have a wonderful sister. Sometimes, I wish she was my sister as well. She always looks after me at work and protects me. I know that she misses you dearly, and I hope you will return to her soon. In the last couple weeks, I've come to love her like a sister myself even though I have never told her. I want to see her happy. She's had to deal with so much pain in one lifetime. I hope you hear our pleas and come back soon.
Before taking his leave, Dutta stopped Shivum.
Dutta: I never got the chance to apologize for my behavior the other day.
Shivum: There is no need for an apology. You were right in your place.
Dutta: Thanks. Give my regards to your parents.
Shivum: Sure. By the way, it's Naku's birthday in two days. My mother mentioned it today. I thought you may want to know.
