Indian weddings are as diverse and different as the people residing here. Every religion has its own way of celebrating the coming together of two people in this sacred union. Hindu marriages are even more diverse, depending on the various regions,maharashtra,begal,rajput,south indians etc. They have been carried out since the beginning of vedas and are ritualistic. It had always amazed me that how thousands of years ago our forefathers had the vision to initiate traditions and rituals which have hidden meanings for a better living and hold good even today. Sometimes we ignore them or snub them as being to old fashioned but the underlying meaning and the purpose of such rituals define lives as they should be lived. Since most of the hindu weddings are conducted in sanskrit an ancient language that is not understood by many hence,saddly we all are not aware of all that is being said and promised in the weddings.

My brother got married a few years ago. I was so intrigued by the wedding rituals i asked the pandit about their significance. He said that any hindu wedding comprises of 5 main rituals.

Kanyadaan

Hastmilap

Agni homa

Sindoor daan / mangalsutra grahan

gatbandhan , saptpadi

In todays update i will incorporate their significance please do comment and share any special knowledge about wedding ceremonies you know of.

Ch17

Tasha and baaji get out of the car. Dutta holds nakku's hand and takes her to the temple, a shiv mandir. Tasha and baaji pray,nakku and baahi turn to leave.

Dutta- ruk nakku. He turns to face her. Nakku, tu aur main tan mann se ek dusre ko chahte hain. Nakku nods. Ek doosre ko apna humsafar maante hai. She nods again par har baar jabhi humne humara rishta duniya ke samne joora to kismat ne naye naye khel khele.

Dutta- tune kaha tha ki ab tu mere naam ka sindoor tab lagayegi jab main tujh par lagaya ilzaam mita dunga. Aaj main chahta hun ki humare pyaar ko bhagwan aur duniya ke samne ek naam mil jaye. Main tujhse aaj abhi purey riti riwaj se shaddi karna chahta hu.

Nakku looks at him bemused.

Dutta- main janta hu ki har ladki ke kuch sapne hote hai apni shadi ke. Maine pehle hi do baar tere sapne tod diye. Agar tu is tarah shadi nahi karna chhegi to hum tere hisaab se shaddi karenge. Par agar aaj tu mujhse shaadi karegi to naa baraat hogi, na bidaai, bus hum honge aklele bhagwaan ke samne.

Nakku smiles with love and tears in her eyes. Saab, aap mujhe mil gaye. Hum itne baadi judai ke baad ek sath hain.isse badi koi baat nahi. Mera sapna hamesha se aapki banane ka tha. Humari shaddi jaise bhi jaha bhi mere liye wo hamesha khaas hai. Tab bhi jab aapne pehli baar meri maang bhari thi. Main bhi apne rishte ko samaj ki swikriti(acceptance) dena chahti hu.

Dutta smiles- baaji? Baaji- haan bhau, main abhi pandit ko awaaz deta hai. Aur sara saman jugaad leta hai. He smiles and leaves.

Tasha look at eachother totally lost. After sometime baaji comes back with garlands and the needed things,but minus the pandit. Baaji- bhau, ek locha hai(there's a problem). Is mandir ke pandit ki abhi abhi maut ho gai hai. Abhi tak ko naya pandit nahi aya.

Tasha are both disappointed. Nakku- ab?

A voice- Ram-sia jo ek mann bhaye, virah rakhe na koi.(if ram and sita are one in heart, no one can separate them) A sage who was sleeping on the steps of the temple and had heard Tasha's convo sits up. He looks at the man and woman standing so close to each other . He notices the way the man had stepped protectivly infront of the girl as soon as he had heard his voice. Sage looks at the man pierceingly, this one is a fighter he thinks to himself looking at his black attire,the red bandage that obviously the girl had fashioned by tearing her dupatta, the blood on his split lip gave evidence that he had recently faught, probably to protect his rights over her. The girl dressed in a red salwar kameez, looked waifish in front of his tall, strong body, looking up at him with awe and total faith,her hands clutching his arm,biting her lower lips with nervousness. She looked beautiful. They both looked beautiful in their love for each other. The other man who had a similar protective stance was definately a friend, a brother and comrade to the growling lion. He smiled.

Dutta- kaun hai tu?

Sage- main to nimidh matra hoon(i am just a pawn for destiny). Tum dono ko ek karne ke liye.

Baaji- matlab? Aye buddhe. Aaj din achcha hai jayada khopadi mat fira.(don't irritate me.)

Nakku- baaji, ruko. Saab sun lo baba kya kah rahe hai.

Sage- beti, tere is sirfire ladake(headstrong warrior) se kah ki main tumhara bhala chahta hu. Nakku realises that he is some pahucha hua sant atma and moves towards him. Dutta- nakku rukja.

Nakku- saab, baba ka ashirwaad lete hai. Ye hume ashirwaad hi denge.

She touches his feet. Baba, kya aap humari shaddi kara sakte hai. Aap to bhagwaan ke pujari lagte hai. Sage looks at a smolddering dutta and says- beti tere jaisi phool se masoom bachchi ki shaddi main is arial saand(stubborn bull) se kar nahi sakta. Mera bhagwaan mujhe maaf nahi karega.

Nakku smiles- baba, aise maat bolo. Saab bahut achche hai.

Sage- theek hai. Agar tu yahi chahti hai to. She nods happily and turns to look at dutta who is looking at him suspiciously. Baaji- isko mantra wantra ata bhi hai ya nahi? Nakku scolds- baaaji!

Duji both share a 'heaven help us' look with rolling eyes. Nakku keeps her torn duppata on her head.

The sage comes to dutta and hands a red dupatta to him. Ye apni hone wali patni par udha do.ye maa durga ki chunari hai. Is bachchi ke liye mata ka ashirwaad.

Dutta takes it and put it on nakku who was trying in vain to fix her dupatta and hair which had come undone in the tussle earlier, she shyly looks down and dutta looks at her pretty face adoringly.'bikul dulhan lag rahi hai. Pyaari si' she blushes.

Ankhiyan Milaike Channa

Aavi na judai veee

Deve na taali mainu sari khudayi ve

(BG (yes again a song)Taare hain baraati film virasat....i just can't help it guyz..the song makes me feel all soft and i go blush blush...)

Tare hai barati,chandani hai yeh barat

Saatho fere honge abb haatho mein lekar haath

The sage makes havan kund and lights fire and tasha sit with him for the shadi. Sage- beti,tera kanyadaan kaun karega?

Nakku looks at dutta with a woeful expression. Dutta looks at sage angrily-ye kanyadaan waan jaroori hai?

(Now the sage explains meaning of all the rituals as mentioned above as tasha finish the rituals .I'll write them in english so that all can understand. By the way a hindu pandit is just the bystander in the wedding. He has no authority to pronounce the bride and groom married. If a non biased witness is present then the marriage can be sanctioned under hindu marriage act in court without pandit's presence.)

Sage- its one of the most important ritual in marriage,son. A wedding cannot go on until a girl is given away to the groom by her father or a elder brother who is like a father to her. This signifies that her elders accept you and ur hand in marriage for their most treasured possesion. You in turn will have to take a vow in front of god and men that u'll always follow dharma(righteous path), artha(material gain) and karma(deeds) to keep her as happy as she was at her home.

Nakku- mera kanyadaan Baajirao karega. Baaji- main? Nakku haan, tum mere bhai jaise hi to ho. She looks at dutta questioningly, dutta smiles and nods. Dutta to baaji- kyu? Koi takleef hai kya?

Baaji- main ek anaath bhau, main kya kissi ka lanyadaan karu. Apshagun hoga mera to kissmat hi aisa hai.

Sage- beta, kanyadaan ka mauka sirf baagyawan(lucky) logo ko milta hai. A girlchild is god's gift

to mankind. She brings prosperity to the earth. She is the mother and goddess lakshmi. A man who can actually give his luck and prosperity to another man selflessly is the greatest man. A father brings up his daughter with love and care, a brother protects her with his life,to hand her over to another. It needs courage and a big heart. Baaji hearing this is touched he wipes his tears and sits for kanyadaan.

After that sage puts nakku's hand in dutta's and says -hastmilap. This is the second most sacred ritual. We pray to lord ganesh that this union is blessed by him and his father and mother lord shiv-parvati. We pray that this union brings happiness and fulfillment in ur lives and god of love bless u with prosperity, peace and offsprings.

Ganaga jamuna se bhi pawan

Tere mera bandhan

Tera prem phoolwari aur mera mann hai aangan

Janmo janmo ka hi sajni tere mera saath

Saatho fere honge abb haatho mein lekar haath

Jeevan saathi hum diya aur baati hum

Sage then does yagya and puts rice in nakku's hand and asks dutta to hold her hand while pouring the rice as sacrifice in fire.'This signifies taht all ur past relationships and attachments. Your past sins and wrongs you are burning in the holy fire. This heralds a new beginning for you as lovers,friends and partners. You promise each other that your past will stay dead in past and you are my present and future. I forsake all others and am from today all yours body and soul.'

The priest asks for sindoor and mangalsutra for sindoor daan. Dutta puts his hand in his pocket and brings out the sindoor box and mangalsutra he had earlier thrown away in anger duriing fr. Nakku is delighted when she sees that he has kept it safe for her.When dutta puts sindoor on her maang some of it falls on her nose. He then ties the mangalsutra in her neck'This proclaims to the world that you are a married woman hence are to be respected and never ill treated. Whoever treats a married woman with unpure thoughts or touch is distroyed like ravan in ramayan and kauravas in mahabharat. '

Tu hai jeevan mein jo preetam

sukh nahi mangu duja

Arthi naino se karthi hoon man se teri pooja

Mein to dharm hi samjhu teri kahi hui har baat

Saatho fere honge abb haatho mein lekar haath

Jeevan saathi hum diya aur baati hum

when its time for gaatbandhan the priest can't find a coth for the tying the knot. He says that this knot ties them to eachother for life as one in soul. When after tying the knot they take saptpad(seven steps/pheras) they move as one body instead of two individuals. The tie signifies that even though you reside in two bodies you are two halves of one whole.dutta says 'humara gatbandhan pyar aur vishwas ka hai.' Tasha get up for pheras and dutta holds nakku's hand as symbol of gaatbandhan.

Sage smiles. 'pehla phera- pati hamesha apne ghar parivar aur patni ke anya jal(food)ka bhaar leta hai(husband takes responsibility to bring the bread for the family all his life)'

'doosra phera -pati apni patni ke mansik aur sharirik swasth ka bhar leta hai.(husband vows to take care of her wifes mental and physical health.)'

'Teesra phera- pati apni patni ki maan,mariyada aur deh ki raksha ka vachan deta hai(husband vows to protect wife's honour and keep her secure throughout life)'

'chauthe phera- pag badal phera hota hai. Isme patni pati se aagey jaane ki agya leti hai taki pati ki har mussibat ,kathinayi ka samna pahele wo kare(the fourth phera is to change steps where wife asks permission from husband to go ahead so that if ever there are difficulties in life then she will face them first)' dutta stops nakku from going ahead. ' baba, agar kabhi koi mussibat aati hai to makku uska samna akele nahi karegi har kadam pe main uska sath dunga.' tasha walk together step by step for the fourth phera. Baaji and sage smile at that.

'pachwa phera- patni vachan deti hai ki pati ke ghar, parivar ka bhar legi. Uske parivar ko apna parivar manegi. Aur parivar ke bandhan majboot karegi.(wife promises to look after husbands family and accept them as her family. She promises to always strengthen the family ties.) '

'Chatta phera- patni vachan deti hai ki har ritu, har samay sachai se pati ka saath degi. Sukh,dukh ki sangini hogi. Aur pati ki har jimedaari nibhane mein uski madat karegi(wife promises to be with her husband in all seasons, in happiness and sorrow, in sickness and health. She promises to help shoulder her husbands responsibilites in her every capacity.)'

'Satava phera- patni vachan deti hai ki wo pati aur ghar parivaar ke mangal ke liye devo ki archana karegi aur pati ke dharm-karam mein uska sath degi.(wife promises to always pray for her husband and families well being and also to prevent any hurdles in her husbands path that prevent him from doing his righteous duty)'

Iske baad aata hai aatva vachan(eight vow) jo pati patni ek doosre se karte hai.

(guyz when the priest explaines this one i was floored. Even today many husbands and inlaws mis treat their wives. I feel if they had really meant these vows they could never have done such things. I'll try to give them to you in english. As he explained it to me.)

'After crossing seven steps with me thus, you have become my friend. I too have become your friend now. I will never discard this friendship and you should also not do that. Let us be together always. Let us resolve to do things in life in the same manner and tread the same path. Let us lead a life by liking and loving each other, having good hearts and thoughts, and enjoying the food and our strong points together. Let us have undivided opinions. We will perform the pilgrims united. Let us have same and joint desires. I will be Sama [one of the vedas]; you will be Rig [another Veda]. Let me be the Heaven; you be the Earth. Let me be the Shukla [Moon] and you be paksha [its wearer]. Let me be the mind and you its spokesman [Vakya]. With these qualities, you be my follower.I'll be yours.Together we will unite in sweet merging to get good children and wealth and prosperity.'

After finishing all the rites of marriage, tasha turn to the sage to receive his blessings, while dutta stands stonily, nakku bends to touch his feet. 'Saab, baba ka ashirwaad lona. Baro ka ashirwaad lena jaroori hota hota hai naye dulha-dulhan ke liye.' He bends down becoz she said so. The sage smiles at his obedience. Beti sada suhagan rahe, duniya ki har khushi naseeb ho. Aur tu, he puts a hand on dutta's head and says -bhagwan tujhe sadbuddhi de.(may god give you some brain and sense)

Baaji too quickly dips and touches his feet.'baba, apun ko bhi sadbudhi chahiye?apan ka kuch bhala ho jayega.' Baba- aisa ashirwaad dena mere bhi pahuch ke bahar hai. bhagwaan tera bhala kare. And he goes away from there.

Tasha pray to god and leave the temple. Baaji takes his phone out- Haan,AS. Ek khub changla khabar aahe.(I have a very good news.)

wow.. shilpi.. this post will be saved by me for the reason u have explained the wedding rituals/phere so beautifully.. amazing dear.. and as u have rightly said even among hindus there are so many diff ways/rasms in getting married.. i am a mallu married to a gujju.. the wedding was done in guju customs and i really wish that someone had explained everything beore hand so i could have understood and enjoyed every mment.. i had a rough idea though!!

i must confess sath mein phera lene wala idea mera nahi tha. my friend who read my update before i posted it. suggested it. and i edited it..she said she saw it in some movie and loved the idea. by the way i m bengali and we have many different customs too. our weddings are very beautiful and colorful.whole three days affair. i personally like the 8th vow and the agni homa where bride and groom burn their past and start afresh.😳
