Part 1: The Doors Open

"Ap dono yaha par sojao", the don said targetedly to Dutta and Naku. "Aaram karo".

And so, with this, he left the two in their room. Dutta and Naku were struck by the words, although for different reasons. Dutta was uncomfortable, with being so close to Naku in this way--the context--and with all that the Don had told them. Dutta felt a stirring of emotion in him, of truth hitting him in the gut...It was as if the don had read Dutta's soul and given words, shape to his here-to-fore chaotic feelings. Dutta looked at Naku, who was adjusting the pillow on the ground, moving it away from that of Dutta. Dutta was feeling vulnerable from the Don's words because they were so true, he was in shock at his own realization that he had feelings for Naku that were not "average" thoughts. His heart moved at the sight of her. But a part of him still resisted.

Dutta moved towards the place on the ground where they would be sleeping. Naku looked up at him, then looked away. She did not want him to feel uncomfortable with her, as he had when she slipped in the mud. There was no rishta, and worse yet, no love from him, Naku reminded herself. She now reminded herself of this often now, of azaad, so that stubborn hope does not keep stirring in her for him.

She looked up at him, met his eye, looked down again. She lay down, covered herself with part of the blanket, and turned away from Dutta. Dutta looked around to see where he else he could sleep, but there was no place...no other chaddars, etc. He relunctantly lay down on the spot near Naku. It was obvious that Naku had left a gulf of room between them, and he knew that it was he who had brought it about.

Dutta too tried to lay down, still in pain from his injuries. He winced in pain as he tried to do so. Naku, instinctively, got up, and looked at him, her eyes beseeching him to let her help him. He did not protest with his eyes, and Naku held his shoulder and upper back and helped him recline. She covered him with the blanket, making sure he was comfortable. She then looked at him, lay down. Both were periodically opening their eyes, thinking, closing them again. Naku wanted to look at him as he slept but did not dare right now. In Dutta's mind there were thoughts, feelings racing amok. His memories of Naku, mixed with the Don's tale, how much Naku relied on him, loved him...it was too much for him. He found himself very aware that Naku was lying next to him, and he was fine with that. He did not expect to feel this way.

Some time later, Naku turned over slowly to make sure Dutta was sleeping, that he was okay. As she moved to her side, lying facing Dutta, she looked at him. His eyes were closed. She adjusted his blanket over him with her one hand, the cold was getting more noticeable. And her eyes continued to do what they yearned to do most. Behold Dutta. It was at this time, that Dutta, turned over to his side towards Naku, and he opened his eyes. Both caught each other, but they did not close their eyes immediately. Like taking a deep breath, their eyes took in a deep image of each other. Naku closed her eyes, and slept on her back. She felt a stirring. He had not looked away. He accepted her glance.

Part 2: The Stirring

Dutta soon fell back to sleep, but not before he thought of their mutual look. Why did it seem so natural for them to look in each other's eyes? No words to mislead, to anger, to push away. Perhaps that was why. Because everytime they looked at each other, there were no falsities. The eyes betray the truth...always.

Dutta ran his hand through his hair a couple of times, and felt edgy. His body was tired, his mind was racing. Naku's words in the car, how he had felt when he saw her lying in the bushes, how he had thought she was dead. How that very last thought had pierced his insides. He was finding it hard to roll over to the other side, so his face naturally kept turning towards Naku. He gulped, trying to gain some control over his thoughts, that like children were just running around in the playyard that was his mind, listening to noone, not even their parents. Dutta then thought of his words...tera rasta alag, mera alag...and then her hugging him, not letting him go. Naku trusted him implicitly, always did. And she always loved him too, that much he was aware of. Hers were words and acts of love for him. Dutta did not feel he had to reciprocate or thank her, but he did feel a part of him awakening for her. All of his actions, all of his unexplicable mood changes towards her, why he was so upset when she held him...she was reminding him of love, something he hated...and the very thing he was feeling inside. The thought that his feelings could be love both amazed and scared him. He had liked her touch, he had liked her holding him, he had felt something in the pit of his stomach when he thought that he had lost her in the accident. It was love. Oh, God, he thought.

He opened his eyes and stared again at Naku. Her little hand in that gulf between them, her braided hair to the side, her little, beautiful face. Dutta's eyes were getting wet, he was getting emotional. He knew the realizations that were about to come. With the don's words, he had finally begun to give his confusing feelings identities of their own and only now was he beginning to understand that he was in love with Naku. That his rasta alag nahi tha uska rasta se.

Dutta tried to move, and grimaced. Naku, who had been in and out of a very unpeaceful sleep, awoke. She turned to Dutta, and said "Saab, ap theek ho? Ap ko kuch chaiye?" [HAY! calm down!]

Duttta did not trust his voice at first. He looked at her, and nodded no. He said to Naku "Tu bahut thak gahi hai, thoda araam kar". "But saab.." "Naku, tu soja" he said softly to her. His voice had betrayed his softening emotions towards her.

The next morning, Dutta awoke to find Naku gone. He sat upright quickly, despite the pain that seered through his back and rest of his upper body. He forced himself up, and walked outside. His eyes scanned for Naku, as it often had for his enemies, hyper-alert, focused. And he finally saw her, standing by the water by herself. Dutta kept his eyes on her. By now the don who had noticed Dutta come out, had walked over to him. "Pyar bina nahi rahe sakta adami, hai na? Chaiye aur nahi chaiye, woh ek din zaroor ayega. Us din, apko samaj ayenge...ap, Dutta Bhao, bhi insaan ho."

Dutta turned forcefully and looked at him. He did not want to talk about this. "Bhao, tere ko pata kyun main yeh keh raha hu"? "Woh ladki apse bahut pyar karti hai...uski aankhon mein dekh sakte hai. Par tu nahi dekh sakta, nahi samaj tha." Dutta was angered by this frank talk about love. The don continued "Ap bhi us se bahut pyar karte ho. Woh bhi ap nahi samaj tha."

By this time, Naku turned around to return and saw Dutta. She stood still for a second or two once she saw him. Dutta walked towards the river and her. He stood near her asking "Tu theek hai?" "Ha, saab". "Aur ap.." Dutta did not answer and instead walk near the water. Naku followed. He lowered himself with difficulty, and she held him as he did so. He splashed his face with water, and looked at his reflection, and that of Naku at his side. His thoughts ran around his mind again. He needed to quiet them down, he needed to get them straightened out.

As he stood up, again with Naku helping him, he turned to her and said "Naku, kal, I said many harsh things to you. Woh theek nahi tha...main ne bas boldiya, main nahi manta." He looked at her face to see her reaction. She looked at him with those big eyes of hers, sighed, and gave him a look that all was forgiven. Dutta felt some relief having unburdened himself with these words, but there was much he had to tell her, much more.
