"Ap dono yaha par sojao", the don said targetedly to Dutta and Naku. "Aaram karo".
And so, with this, he left the two in their room. Dutta and Naku were struck by the words, although for different reasons. Dutta was uncomfortable, with being so close to Naku in this way--the context--and with all that the Don had told them. Dutta felt a stirring of emotion in him, of truth hitting him in the gut...It was as if the don had read Dutta's soul and given words, shape to his here-to-fore chaotic feelings. Dutta looked at Naku, who was adjusting the pillow on the ground, moving it away from that of Dutta. Dutta was feeling vulnerable from the Don's words because they were so true, he was in shock at his own realization that he had feelings for Naku that were not "average" thoughts. His heart moved at the sight of her. But a part of him still resisted.
Dutta moved towards the place on the ground where they would be sleeping. Naku looked up at him, then looked away. She did not want him to feel uncomfortable with her, as he had when she slipped in the mud. There was no rishta, and worse yet, no love from him, Naku reminded herself. She now reminded herself of this often now, of azaad, so that stubborn hope does not keep stirring in her for him.
She looked up at him, met his eye, looked down again. She lay down, covered herself with part of the blanket, and turned away from Dutta. Dutta looked around to see where he else he could sleep, but there was no place...no other chaddars, etc. He relunctantly lay down on the spot near Naku. It was obvious that Naku had left a gulf of room between them, and he knew that it was he who had brought it about.
Dutta too tried to lay down, still in pain from his injuries. He winced in pain as he tried to do so. Naku, instinctively, got up, and looked at him, her eyes beseeching him to let her help him. He did not protest with his eyes, and Naku held his shoulder and upper back and helped him recline. She covered him with the blanket, making sure he was comfortable. She then looked at him, lay down. Both were periodically opening their eyes, thinking, closing them again. Naku wanted to look at him as he slept but did not dare right now. In Dutta's mind there were thoughts, feelings racing amok. His memories of Naku, mixed with the Don's tale, how much Naku relied on him, loved him...it was too much for him. He found himself very aware that Naku was lying next to him, and he was fine with that. He did not expect to feel this way.
Some time later, Naku turned over slowly to make sure Dutta was sleeping, that he was okay. As she moved to her side, lying facing Dutta, she looked at him. His eyes were closed. She adjusted his blanket over him with her one hand, the cold was getting more noticeable. And her eyes continued to do what they yearned to do most. Behold Dutta. It was at this time, that Dutta, turned over to his side towards Naku, and he opened his eyes. Both caught each other, but they did not close their eyes immediately. Like taking a deep breath, their eyes took in a deep image of each other. Naku closed her eyes, and slept on her back. She felt a stirring. He had not looked away. He accepted her glance.
