"Ap dono yaha par sojao", the don said targetedly to Dutta and Naku. "Aaram karo".

And so, with this, he left the two in their room. Dutta and Naku were struck by the words, although for different reasons. Dutta was uncomfortable, with being so close to Naku in this way--the context--and with all that the Don had told them. Dutta felt a stirring of emotion in him, of truth hitting him in the gut...It was as if the don had read Dutta's soul and given words, shape to his here-to-fore chaotic feelings. Dutta looked at Naku, who was adjusting the pillow on the ground, moving it away from that of Dutta. Dutta was feeling vulnerable from the Don's words because they were so true, he was in shock at his own realization that he had feelings for Naku that were not "average" thoughts. His heart moved at the sight of her. But a part of him still resisted.

Dutta moved towards the place on the ground where they would be sleeping. Naku looked up at him, then looked away. She did not want him to feel uncomfortable with her, as he had when she slipped in the mud. There was no rishta, and worse yet, no love from him, Naku reminded herself. She now reminded herself of this often now, of azaad, so that stubborn hope does not keep stirring in her for him.

She looked up at him, met his eye, looked down again. She lay down, covered herself with part of the blanket, and turned away from Dutta. Dutta looked around to see where he else he could sleep, but there was no place...no other chaddars, etc. He relunctantly lay down on the spot near Naku. It was obvious that Naku had left a gulf of room between them, and he knew that it was he who had brought it about.

Dutta too tried to lay down, still in pain from his injuries. He winced in pain as he tried to do so. Naku, instinctively, got up, and looked at him, her eyes beseeching him to let her help him. He did not protest with his eyes, and Naku held his shoulder and upper back and helped him recline. She covered him with the blanket, making sure he was comfortable. She then looked at him, lay down. Both were periodically opening their eyes, thinking, closing them again. Naku wanted to look at him as he slept but did not dare right now. In Dutta's mind there were thoughts, feelings racing amok. His memories of Naku, mixed with the Don's tale, how much Naku relied on him, loved him...it was too much for him. He found himself very aware that Naku was lying next to him, and he was fine with that. He did not expect to feel this way.

Some time later, Naku turned over slowly to make sure Dutta was sleeping, that he was okay. As she moved to her side, lying facing Dutta, she looked at him. His eyes were closed. She adjusted his blanket over him with her one hand, the cold was getting more noticeable. And her eyes continued to do what they yearned to do most. Behold Dutta. It was at this time, that Dutta, turned over to his side towards Naku, and he opened his eyes. Both caught each other, but they did not close their eyes immediately. Like taking a deep breath, their eyes took in a deep image of each other. Naku closed her eyes, and slept on her back. She felt a stirring. He had not looked away. He accepted her glance.

Dutta had for the first time in a very long time allowed himself to be receptive to love. To the thought of it, to the possibility of it. For himself. And in spite of all the wounds that were still branded, seared onto his soul, he thought of giving himself a chance. In the Don's story, Dutta saw a lot of himself. Of being betrayed, angry at his kismat, at the people who had played so carelessly with his heart and life...of being scared and vulnerable despite all the guns and the power. And he saw how the fear and anger had made themselves at home in his heart, shutting the doors and keeping the very love he still begged for out.

He had begun to understand his feelings for Naku. His friendship with her, his intimacy with her, at always feeling like she was there. When she had returned the mangalsutra and walked away, he felt like a part of his life just left, and he could not bring himself to not see her again. It was not guilt that was driving his feelings, it was love. With each hug and word, Naku had made herself a home in his heart, pushing away some of the anger and hate. She filled him with hope.

Naku looked at him. She knew the inner struggle these words were borne from. And she cried for him and for herself. At all the pain Dutta had suffered in his life, in hers, and the chance they were giving each other now. Dutta rested his forehead against the top of her head and said that he finally understood.

So they stood there, among the intertwined trees, in silence, in their own special peace. Neither had to say anything more, that was always the beauty that existed between them. After a few minutes had passed, Dutta moved and held Naku's hand to lead her out of the jungle. The dampness, the humidity was still stifling, and Naku's heart felt uneasy. There remained between her and Dutta one thing: the secret she had kept from everyone. Her face. This realization ate at her, and it was merciless. She had to tell him, it had to be now.

Naku pulled at Dutta's hand. For a split second, Dutta thought that Naku was again not doing well, but he saw from her eyes, that something else was happening inside.
"Kya hua?" he said to her, with worry mixed with confusion.
Naku responded, "There is nothing in my heart that you do not know. From the moment I met you, I have loved you. And I will love you for as long as I am in this world."
Dutta looked at her, at her concentration. "Main ne sirf ek sachai chupayi ap se".
Dutta did not expect to hear these words, and in one corner of his heart, he felt this sense of dread. Naku took his hand and sat down, pulling him down with her. She looked at Dutta's shocked and uncertain expression, and started telling her story.

Of her birth, of her name Nakusha, of being "unwanted." She told Dutta about her elder sister, her didi and how her destiny changed Naku's forever. The humidity soon ushered in a faint drizzle. And it hit Naku how hers and Dutta's destinies had already been laid out...how this was the moment the truth wanted to reveal itself...was always going to reveal itself on its own.

Naku continued, not shaken by the storm or the truth that was about to burst open. Dutta looked at her, hearing for the first time the story of the woman he loved, and understanding the mitti that had moulded her. He listened patiently, as if discovering her all over again. Naku told him about Babi, her trauma at losing her daughter to a world of rich but morally-bankrupt men. How beauty, in Babi's eyes, became a curse. The slight drizzle became more steady and Naku began feeling the water hit her hair. She held Dutta's hand and looked again into his eyes, beseechingly. "Aayi ne ek faisla banaya aur us din meri duniya badalgayi."

Naku raised her other hand and held it out in the rain and proceeded..."Ek din, aayi ne mera chera par kala [soot?] lagaya, and with this my outside changed, how other people saw me changed." She moved her eyes to her outstretched hand, and Dutta's eyes followed. Despite the heavier drizzle, neither sought to move. Dutta's eyes widened at the sight before him, at the whitening of Naku's hand. He looked at her, shocked at what he was seeing, at her words. Naku told him about More, of almost being sold as her sister had been, and how her kismat brought him into her life and her heart. While she talked, the rain dripped from her hair to her face. Naku raised her face to the sky and the rain, and to the truth. Taking both of Dutta's hands, placing hers over his, she wiped her face gently. Her eyes remained fixed on Dutta, seeing his every reaction, his every movement.

"I could not tell you. I loved you, and you were about to marry and have that chance for happiness. Who was I to love you?" she continued. "Jab humari shaadi hui aur apne faisla banaya"...she paused..."that I had helped Tai run away, that main ne dhoka diya, how could I tell you then? You would have said that I was deceiving you, betraying you again. I could not do that you." By now, she had already brought down Dutta's hands to her knees and kept them there. Dutta just looked at her, shocked. Words eluded him, his emotions eluded him. He stared blankly at her. Naku continued, it was that day when I realized that I could only tell you once you trusted me again..." Dutta moved his face to the side, and this worried Naku. He turned his face to hers again, and saw the fear in her eyes, her concentrating on him. "I am telling you now because it is time. Maaf karna. Mera chera badalgaya aaj, par mera dil nahi. Aur mera dil mein, ap rehte ho, pehle nazar se." Naku felt her eyes water and she looked at Dutta, dearly wanting him to say something, anything. When Dutta did not say anything, she moved her hands off of his, unsure of his feelings at that moment.

For a few quiet moments, they stared at each other, and away. And finally, Dutta grabbed at her, and pulled her to him with his arm.
