Unlike other Miss India contest winners, why did you choose to do TV?
I have been acting on television even before I won the crown. I did several telefilms in Kolkatta around 1999. After winning the title, I decided to stay back in Mumbai to explore opportunities here.
Or was it because you got a raw deal in films?
I have acted in seven films including Banaras, Gahri Chaal, Kya Se Kya Ho Gaya, Bhaya, Adaa and Tumse Milkar but unfortunately, none of them saw the light of the day. Initially, I was upset but now I have moved on. I chose to move ahead instead of sitting and cribbing.
I had done a commercial Bengali film too (Amar Mayer Shapoth ). It did well, but my career in Bengali films was short-lived because I am tall, dark and skinny; qualities that they don't look for in heroines there.
Did you to turn to TV out of frustration?
Not at all. I love acting and the medium is really not an issue as long as I get to do good roles. And in Kyunki…, my role and popularity is growing. In fact, Ekta has promised that Bhoomi's character will develop in a unique way.
Also, I am adamant about not exposing or doing bold scenes. Maybe that has been a hitch in my career. But as is my nature, I don't sit and crib.
Why did you choose to act in a soap-opera instead of hosting a show, like other models do?
At first, I did not want to do serials. But after seven years of working in the industry, I want to settle down, have a regular income, get married and have children. And I am very bad at hosting TV shows. I have tried it a number of times and I have realised that it will not work for me. I don't know what happens, but I get nervous. May be it's just a mind-block.
Don't you feel out of place acting in a saas-bahu soap?
Definitely not. There is a lot of scope for my character to grow, and that keeps me going.
Are you still open to working in films?
Why not? My friends tell me that I shouldn't talk about my films which have not been released, because I may be considered unlucky. But I don't think so.
