The people who changed the face of Indian Television: Shobha Kapoor / Ekta Kapoor (Producers)
16/09/2008 | Vierendra Bhargav

Who…
Shobha Kapoor / Ekta Kapoor (Producers)

What…
They are the Maharani's of mush and if you thought that is no big deal - think again. Ask that housewife at the sink in the kitchen and she will tell you how big the deal really is. Despite all the flak they have received from the high-brows for the kind of content they are making, this mother & daughter duo has created a body of work that has become the toast of middle class households across the county.

Starting with Hum Paanch (before the K-fixation engulfed them), they have gone on to make Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, Kahani Gar Ghar Ki and Kasauti Zindagi Ki – the trinity of soaps that have redefined popularity on the box. It has been curtains for 'Kasauti…' but the other two have entered the eighth year of their running – albeit with their sweep & sway not being quite the same as before and big dents appearing in their viewership.

But it hardly matters. The three have catapulted Kapoors' Balaji Telefilms to numero uno position in the TV-production sector, today…!

Why…
The business of Indian Television owes a lot to Shobha and Ekta Kapoor. Take or leave it, they are the unquestionable queens of TV-commerce. And even if the later Balaji shows have been no patch on the commercial boom created by the trinity of 'Kyunki…', 'Kahani…', 'Kasauti…', they are here to stay as a force to reckon with, in the genre…!
