Most often, they have been driven to that manic state by their spineless husbands. Still, they soldier on. Surviving thousands of agni parikshas, they have moved from bedrooms to boardrooms, from kitchens to prison cells and from theplas to tandooris. Today, the ghar ghar ki kahanis of Parvati, Tulsi and Kumkum continue.. and continue..and continue..writes Roshmila Bhattacharya who, incidentally, adores her saas | |

| < name="selZoom" value="100" =""> SAAKSHI TANWAR Parvati.. Kahani Ghar Ghar Kii It was destiny it seems. She was shooting a pilot episode for Karam in which she had a bit role. Ekta Kapoor of Balaji Productions, walked into the set. One look at Tanwar dressed in her tra- ditional finery and Kapoor firmed her as Parvati in her new serial Kahani Ghar Ghar Kii. Tanwar was baffled. She had thought things were not working out with Balaji. She was about to head back home to Delhi to work in the serial Rajdhani. Balaji Boss explained that she wanted her to play a woman in her mid- 30s with a 15-year-old child. Surprise turned to shock. Then, the age factor was made more practical. Parvati's age was halved.. so was her daughter's. Tanwar was persuaded to stay back in Mumbai and play the ideal bahu, biwi and ma even though till the last minute she had been looking at the exit door. That was eight years ago. Since then, Parvati has lived, died and been reborn in a new glam- glam avatar. She's still plotting, planning and playing the bahu.. but the thrill has begun to wane. Today, Tanwar is reluc- tant to talk about Parvati. And is struggling to break out of the stereotype. She says she will speak after a month when "hopefully I'll have something new to say." Is Parvati on her way out then? GAUTAMI GADGIL Tulsi: Kyunkii Saas bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi On June 6, 2007, Smriti Malhotra-Irani's Tulsi died. A month later Gautami Kapoor stepped into her chappals. Sweet-faced and supreme- ly miscast, Kapoor seems to be wilting under the burden of expectations. It's not easy to come out of Irani's shadow. Pro- ducer Ekta Kapoor is obvi- ously feeling the pressure as she struggles to give meaning and a message to Tulsi's never-ending dharamyudh. TV's most famous bahu lives on.. but the life seems to have gone out of her. | |

| < name="selZoom" value="100" =""> After six years, have Juhi Parmar and Kumkum Wadhwa merged? Although I've been breathing Kumkum for the last six years, I've held on to Juhi who is poles apart. The only similarity we share is that like my screen role I too stand up for what I believe in. (Laughs) Not everyone likes me but I'd rather be transparent than double-faced. If you're so different from Kumkum, how can you play her convincingly for so long? I completely believe in what I'm doing. But away from the camera, I'm a young bubbly girl. So doesn't the young Juhi Parmar resent playing the years-older Kumkum? It's tough when co-stars who are your age or much older, call you maa. (Smiles) Instead of touching their cheek, you have to touch their head and give your blessings. The buzz is that you're so fed up that you were threatening to quit. In a bid to appease you, there will be a reincarnation track in which you will appear as a much younger character. What nonsense! If that were true I'd have made these threats when the soap went in for its second leap. A heart-to-heart dis- cussion resolves all issues. After playing the title role for six years,I desperately need a break. This track will rejuvenate me, I'll return as Kumkum refreshed. I'm told that this new character will be more glamorous too.. in keeping with your off- screen image? I hope so but Kumkum has become syn- onymous with saris and a large bindi. You can't wear a bindi with jeans, can you? Even the other characters I've played were very desi. Did you expect the show to go on for so long? Honestly, no. How long do you see it continuing? (Laughs) Hopefully another six years. Won't that be a drag? It does get monotonous but my character has been given new shades and there are new roles, like that of Chanda and the Haryanvi maid. I loved Chanda. My grandma felt as if the bachpan ki Juhi had come back. You're still single. How many proposals do you get in a day? (Laughs) I get one every now and then. Everyone wants a bahu like Kumkum. That's a tall order. Hopefully, the family I marry into will not be looking for Kumkum but will be happy with Juhi. Would you want a husband like Sumeet? I'd want him to stand by me, uncondition- ally, and keep the romance alive as we age. Aren't these soap bahus the modern-day Hunterwalis? (Laughs) Kumkum doesn't have a hunter but she knows how to put people straight. So does Juhi. Will you accept another soap? I'd like to try another genre. I'd even do a movie if the role is substantial. Other- wise no. I've already turned down so many. Aren't reality shows streaking ahead of the saas bahu sagas? Reality shows? I don't know how real they are. They are becoming popular but I don't see them replacing soaps which have their own viewership. The TRPs are still high. roshmila.bhattacharya@hindustantimes.com | |

| < name="selZoom" value="100" =""> THE ONES WHO GOT AWAY SMRITI IRANI Tulsi.. Kyunkii Saas bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi Fresh-faced, feisty and a Miss India runners-up, Smriti (then Malhotra) Irani entered Kyunkii Saas bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi as Mihir's will-take-no-non- sense wife Tulsi. For the next seven years, she whipped up mass adulation with her high-pitched monologues. She was the new millennium Mother India. Then personal ambition beckoned. Amidst rumours of a fall-out with mentor Ekta Kapoor, she bid goodbye to the role-of-a- lifetime with a stagey death scene that con- vinced no one that this was The End. Gautami Kapoor has kept the ideal bahu alive but it has to be said that her Tulsi lacks Irani's spit and fire.. and mass appeal. SHWETA TIWARI Prerna.. Kasauti Zindagii Kay She started out as a college kid, became an unwed mother, a reluctant biwi, a stepmother, grandmoth- er and even a great-grandmother. It's been such a long journey for Shweta Tiwari as Kasauti Zindagii Kay's Prerna. But seven years down the road she wants out: "Kasauti... has been a beautiful experience but all good things have to come to an end," she sighs. Left with no option, Ekta Kapoor is draw- ing the curtains down on this TRP grabber, perhaps prema- turely, because as Tiwari says, "No other actress can play Prerna." | |
