I would try and point out all the achievement he/she has done and compare the difference between ones failure - if does not work than I would work around the failure and see where it went wrong.

Secreats - no - not if it is husband and wife secreat

sometimes it is best to leave that person alone - and than later on talk to them about it - give them a chance to think for them selves.

My opinion - the only way you can judge some one nature/personality is by observing from a far - see how they behave with others - are they the same with you - do you see a differance in their behaviour. It is sometimes difficult to judge other people - it is just trial and error.
