They never felt the need for it before coz they effectively communicated via email or just face to face, so it never occurred to either one to ask that. You remember she does not even ask for a lift when its raining... and now when they want to talk to each other they are not sure if they can make it that obvious and ask that through email... he is worried it will give her hopes and he does not want to do that till he is ready... and she is basically a reserved person, asking could mean he can refuse and she is scared of that rejection, already she has seen the sudden change in him... so it is a catch-22 dilemma for them
