After writing the last post I had a kind of epiphany (Thanks Sam ) and a lot of thoughts that were frustrating as well as confusing me made sense. Especially after reading Mahua's post and then having that small realization. This is the first serial where there is so many different layers, facets and dimensions are portrayed in the story. Hats off to all the people involved in bringing KRPKAB to life.
The way the episodes are going this week brought out a whole new dimension to the story. Before I go further, there are some dialogues that I want to reference here.
zindagi mein pehli baar aisa lagraha hai jaise, koi mera apna hai, sirf mera. Jisse mein kabhi bhi paa saktha hoon, maang saktha hoon, haq se.
You are mine
App meri zindagi mein nahi hongi, yeh mein soch bhi nahi saktha, sochna bhi nahi chahta. Aapko apne paas rakhne keliye, aapke saath rehne keliye, jo karna pade who karunga. Apse pehle patha nahi, lekin aapke mere life mein aane ke baad, yeh ehsaas hone ke baad ki mein aapse pyar kartha hoon, aapke bagayair apni zindagi impossible lagthi hai. aapke bagayair mein soch bhi nahi saktha apni zindagi ko.
pyar haq dedeta hai.
Tum meri subah utne ki wajah, meri saans leni ki wajah banchuki thi. Mein tumhe kudhse kaise alag kardo. Hum dono to alag hi nahi hai, ek hain.
These are said by Dev to Sonakshi. But this is what Sonakshi should also have told Dev. It is true that Sonakshi did love and it was the immutable truth to her and was also idealistic. But she did not give the same priority or importance to the "object of that love aka Dev". He was not at the top of her priority list. When Dev cancelled his engagement with Natasha and confessed of his love to Sonakshi, he put her above everything including his mother. At that time his company, his reputation, his family did not really matter as much as having Sonakshi in his life. It was not the same with Sonakshi. After his confession, when he calls her later, he tells her to come and meet him first thing in the morning. But when she comes in, she is stopped by Nikki and she doesn't come to Dev directly. I am not saying Sonakshi was wrong, but she didn't tell Nikki that she had to meet Dev either. Even when she finally goes to meet him, the moment Kichu calls her, she starts to leave from there giving importance to her job.
Even though Dev was the CEO and handled the finances @ Dixit house and it looked like a patriarchal household, I feel it was more of a matriarchal household. In IN, females had the decision making power which was not given to Dev. Dev couldn't take any decisions unlike Neha who could say she wanted to learn English or that she loves Ranveer and wants to marry him. Riya could say she wants to work and Nikki could do what she wanted. Whether Nikki wanted to go to the sleepover or the college trip, all Dev could do was appeal on her behalf to Ishwari, but the final decision making capability rested solely with her.
With Sonakshi coming to the picture and Dev giving her the same importance that once was Ishwari's, Ishwari became insecure. More than her god status, she was scared of what she had done. In her eagerness to get out of poverty and make sure that they wouldn't have to see that ever again, Ishwari realized that she had created a "single point of failure" with Dev. While when he followed her instructions he was the tool for her success, he was also that point if failed would mean the crumbling of whole Dixit clan like a house of cards. Ishwari who is smart saw how much influence Sonakshi had over Dev and feared that. She does not want to ever even in her wildest dreams be back in that place where she would have to hold her pallu in one hand and her courage and self-respect in another.
Here is another thought. Dev didn't really care much for Ishwari's approval of Sonakshi. But he knew how much she wanted it. This is even before the breakup. Yes it is true that he cited his mother's health as the problem and say that "hame alag hojana chayiye". During Neha vidaayi time he tells Sonakshi that he adds filters when he talks to the rest of the world, but she was that one person with whom he did not add that filter. When he was talking in hospital, for him it was just sharing his thoughts and not really anything apart from that. As soon as Ishwari was back at IN, he called Sonakshi. It was Sonakshi's words that he respected and decided as the breakup rather than his own words.
When Dev blamed Ishwari in his inebriated state during Ritwick's engagement time, he indirectly told her that if he didn't get Sonakshi in his life, her fear of that single point failure would come true. He kind of forced her to accept his choice for the first time. When Dev went to tell Sonakshi about their being able to be together and that Ishwari accepted, he thought she would be happy. From his perspective, he didn't really care much for Ishwari's approval of her. But he knew how much that approval meant to Sonakshi and he did not want to her not happy. He wanted to give Sonakshi whatever she wanted and asked of him which is very similar to what he tells for Soha. "Agar who chaand bhi maangegi toh mein laakar doonga". But Sonakshi misunderstood and thought that Dev came there only after Ishwari's approval. She did not know that Dev had rebelled and that got that approval just for her.
With her digging for the truth regarding Ishwari, the sense of priority for the one we love as opposed to that transcendental love is what is being dissected. There is no doubt that Sonakshi loves Suhaana. But is Suhaana above all else for Sonakshi. Given what is being shown, it is not so. Suhaana questioned Dev that "if you cannot keep my mom happy, how can you keep me happy." Here Sonakshi left Suhaana in pursuit of the truth. She made this choice with full knowledge of what it would mean. I mean Sonakshi knew that Suhaana was not feeling well, that Dev cannot be with Suhana. She asked Elena to keep an eye on her, but comparatively Elena is not someone with whom Suhana is that familiar with. Like in yesterday's episode, she did not feel that comfortable in riding the back of maamaji even when she named him "cool daadu".
Conversely Suhana has seen Dev put her above all else when he cancelled the deal, ran the race, caught the snake and when he said he did not care even if he got sick, but wanted to be with Suhana. By doing what she is doing, Sonakshi is not just alienating Dev, but is also leaving Suhana behind. More than Dev questioning her, does Sonakshi have an answer if Suhana asks her - what is more important to you, me or you finding the truth or some other thing that you want to do.
I am also very excited about the Bose house dynamics following Asha's comment about Bijoy's reaction if Sonakshi decides to stay back at IN. If Dev was the "single point of failure" 7 years ago, Sonakshi is in the same place with respect to Bose house. Before her marriage, Saurabh had a business of his own which didn't need Sonakshi for its survival. But their current venture is not so. If Sonakshi decides to move to IN, yes she will continue to work and be that entrepreneur that she has been. But she will not be as easily available to the Boses as she is now. Bijoy is placed in the exact place of Ishwari where he will be faced with the question - if he should accept Sonakshi's happiness which is against his own or not. Here is where Jatin comes in. If Sonakshi were to marry Jatin then shouldn't technically go out of Bose house. They would still continue to live as one big happy family. But if Sonakshi decides that she wants to go with Dev, then the challenge comes in.
I am really enjoying these parallels and the depth they bring to the story there by bringing out a new shade of love and relationship. 😃
