One thing I loved about the sequence was the use of symbolisms in injuries sustained. Both, Dev and Sonakshi injured themselves on their one foot signifying that both of there grounds are shaky currently.
Dev, with him stumbling through the pain of Sonakshi's separation and the realization that his mother wasn't a goddess but a flawed human being with insecurities.
Sona, has been playing juggling on one leg in past seven years with her mountain of responsibilities and a child to bring up by being a parent and a friend.
Both are finding healing with a crutch they had lost seven years ago. Each other and a manifestation of there love in Soha.
The injury while appearing to be a minor scratch was actually much deeper. Dev's blood was oozing out reflecting him wearing his emotions on his sleeve still while Sona's sprain was more of an internal injury reflecting on her ability to mask perfection even when she is completely shattered from the inside. Both have unwillingly recognized that in each other as well because of which the bitterness and anger hovering over there emotions has faded quite a bit. It's going to be more challenging for Sona hereon forth since she won't reveal the amount of pain bothering her until probed by someone she trusts fully. -and it won't be Bijoy.
Wonderful analysis of the symbolism of Dev and Sona's injuries! 👏 I would like to add a few more things that I thought were significant.
Sona got injured because of her pride, and her insistence that only her way could be right. Dev was sabotaged by an insecure rival, because he was winning. In typical fashion, he chose not to retaliate or bring his perpetrator to justice (camp mein ye sab hota rehta hai = family mein ye sab hota rehta hai). Each of their fatal flaws so aptly represented as the cause for their respective, "matching" injuries.
In order to be good parents, both of them assured Soha, falsely, that their injuries were not causing them pain anymore. What's more, Sona said that it was "perfect, just perfect" because Soha had massaged it. This represented Sona's belief that Soha completed her life once she lost Dev, and healed all her wounds. In reality, there is much healing left to be done and only Dev can do it. As you pointed out, the degree of her pain is hidden by the internal nature of her injury -- only Dev saw that it was bad enough to knock her out.
Their reaction to the race showed the complementary nature of their parenting styles. Sona teaches Soha to be practical, understanding, and limit her risks. Dev, on the other hand, is all jung vo jeete hai jo maidan mein utarte hai! Take the plunge and deal with the consequences as they come. Dev, like you said, wears his feelings on his sleeve. He is not afraid for his daughter to know that he isn't invincible, and shows his pain without shame (he taught Golu the same lesson: mard ko dard hota hai). For him, it's more important that she knows he would do anything in his power for her, and apparently that message was effectively communicated. In her flashbacks, Soha remembered everything that Dev has done just to be able to spend time with her and that is when she identified her Papa.
This is where I love the continuing gender role fluidity on this show. Soha already has a hero in her mother -- that person who seems capable of solving any problem and therefore makes her feel safe and secure. That's why Dev wasn't getting anywhere with his hero-giri. Where he did make huge headway was in a more nurturing role -- taking care of Sona when she was injured both times, endearing himself to Soha through sweet gestures like the rose on Valentines day and their secret signal, and just being there for her no matter what. With him, she holds herself to slightly lower expectations where being reasonable is concnerned, because he's shown her that he isn't perfect either, and I think it was telling that her "unreasonable" request was directed at him. She knows Sona has explained everything to her, but maybe Dev is willing to do something that she isn't, just as he participated in the race when Sona couldn't.
Soha loves seeing her powerful mother in action (so much like her papa!) and Dev enables that strong Sona with his little acts of care. Dev has understood and embraced this role now, which is also why I think he had no problem taking repsonsibility for the failure of their marriage. Showing Sona's weaknesses would cause Soha a lot of emotional instability at a time when she is already dealing with a slew of new information. Dev, after his first impulsive goof up when he revealed his identity to Soha off the cuff, has been genuinely remorseful and interested in making this phase as easy for Soha as possible. Taking care of Soha's mother so that she can be the hero that Soha needs is a big part of that.
