Chapter 3

She was startled to say the least and dropped her mobile phone. Dev picked it up and handed it back to her and said "How are you Dr. Bose?" "I am good Mr. Dixit. What about you? How have you been?" Sona replied. Dev was silent and didn't reply as he was still busy looking at her and then it struck him as to what was so different about Sonakshi. She was dressed in a pale pink coloured saree without any embellishments and she was not wearing any jewellery at all. All she wore was a watch around her thin wrist. She was definitely not the Sona he know who loved bright colours and always made fun of him for wearing boring blues and greys. He noted that she was not wearing earrings which she always loved. However, he knew he had other important things to discuss now with her. "Why didn't you tell me Sona ... About Ritwik? I thought we were friends before we fell in love" Dev asked her. Sona looked away and said "What would I have said Dev. I discovered I was pregnant a few weeks after Ritwik died in a road accident. The pregnancy was tough and I had no time to grieve properly as I had to be strong for the baby and for Baba. They had no one else. And also I didn't tell you because I thought you would have moved on and married someone auntyji selected for you. Someone more suited for you. Knowing you, I didn't want you to feel obligated to help me nor did I want you to be in a moral dilemma." Dev felt really hurt when he heard this and said "Why do you say these things Sona.. you really think so? For your information I am still single as there is only one woman I ever fell in love with in my life - you know that very well".

Sona looked at him for a moment quietly and said "I need to get back inside" and she went back in. Dev stood at the balcony for some more time and after many years made an impulsive decision again. He took out his phone and typed a message to Tina "There is some important work that has come up in Mumbai. Please extend my hotel stay arrangements for another ten days".

Having made the decision, Dev was relieved and went back inside. The party inside was in full swing when Mr. Mehta, one of the other Trustees came upto him with a pretty girl dressed in a little black dress next to him. Mr. Mehta said "Dev I want you to meet Akansha Reddy, she is the daughter of Mr. G Reddy, one of the leading business men in Mumbai. She was very keen to meet you as she has heard a lot about you". Akansha proffered her hand and said "Hi Dev. I wanted to meet you for ages". Dev smiled and shook hands with her and said "Hi. Nice to meet you Akansha - what do you do?"She said "I run a fashion retailing business. My dad contributes to this NGO as he feels they have been doing phenomenal work but I am not really a hands on person as far as these things are concerned. I came because he wanted me to". Saying this she smiled and shrugged her shoulders. Dev was appalled to hear what she said and realized that his attention was drawn to Sona talking to some persons a few feet away from where he was standing with Akansha. He couldn't help but compare the two women - Akasha was wearing a black designer dress that showed off her toned body and the diamonds in the ears and around her wrist must have cost a small fortune. Her face was beautifully made up as well. Sona on the other hand was wearing a plain silk saree which must have cost a fraction of the black dress and she wore no jewelry at all. Her saree was draped such that she did not show even an inch of skin anywhere yet in Dev's eyes she was the one who was so much more attractive. He suddenly realized that Akansha was asking him out for a drink later that night which he somehow managed to avoid and excused himself after exchanging numbers with her.

The party soon broke up and the guests started leaving one by one. By about 11 PM everyone had left except for Sona and her core team and Dev.

Sona spoke to her team and thanked them for all the hard work put in by them. As she turned around and moved to the exit she realized that Dev was still around. "I thought that you would have left". Dev said "I wanted to talk to you Sona!" Sona replied "There is nothing left to talk about Dev. Its late and I need to get back home to my daughter. Maybe tomorrow, if you are still in Mumbai". By then they had reached the car park. The valet brought Sona's car and as she thanked the valet and got into the drivers seat she told Dev "It was nice meeting you after years Dev. I really think you should get married now. Good Night". As she drove away Dev thought "How can I get fall in love and get married to someone else Sona when I am still so very much in love with you".

The next day dawned and Dev had a plan in place. He got Sona's mobile number from Dr. Sinha and sent her a text asking her to meet him for dinner that night. She declined and he was not surprised.

As Sona walked out of the hospital that evening, the first thing she saw was Dev leaning against her car, checking messages on his phone. "What are you doing here Dev?" she asked annoyed. "Ok Don't come with me for dinner. Can we meet for a cup of coffee at least? Its business and not personal" Dev said. Sona was quiet for a while and said "Ok. Lets go! I have half an hour before I need to get back home to my daughter."
