Why do bad things happen to good people, and good things happen to bad people? This is a question that has been asked from time immemorial in all cultures and religions. We all have different ways of understanding how this works, some people insist that if you do good, good happens to you as well, others believe that doing good is reward in itself, still others believe that if everyone looks out only for their self-interest, the world will balance itself, and some just believe it's all complete chaos. We have no idea what the ultimate truth about this is, so we all choose what we want to believe.
The show is not trying to assure us that good begets good, but shining a mirror on certain prevalent issues in our unjust, imperfect society. So I don't think Dev and Sona will come out happier in the end because of some cosmic balance of justice, but simply because they act in a way that makes them personally happy. Elena had a better first day because she genuinely does not care what these people think of her. Sona could have done the exact same thing, and probably gotten away with it because the image of her son, broken and hateful, was still fresh in Ishwari's mind. But acting like Elena did today would have made Sona deeply unhappy. For one thing, Sona would never allow herself to fail at something without giving it her best effort, and more importantly, she would be keenly aware of Ishwari's feelings and would be miserable if she hurt her in any way.
GKB's defense of Elena was not genuine; she is merely afraid of losing her son. Vicky has made it amply clear that this is a definite possibility if the lines are crossed with his wife. While that might work for them, because neither of them care about anything but themselves, it would never work for Sona and Dev because they couldn't hang a sword like that over Ishwari's head and remain happy themselves. They are trying, together and individually, to rise above the power play in these mind games. They are trying to build genuine relationships.
In the end, it's perfectly possible that Vicky and Elena will coast through life not ever facing the consequences of their actions; it happens all the time in real life as well. But what they will not have is relationships of depth and meaning, relationships that are built with love rather than power. It's up to each individual to decide if that is worth having. If Dev and Sona had acted like these two, it would have been easier on them in one sense, but given how much they care about their parents, they would never have had personal satisfaction. It's like SRK says in DDLJ -- there is always the easy path and the right one (the dialogue is here for anyone who wants a refresher!). In the show, we are seeing a live demonstration of that dialogue!
