Chapter 9:

Sometimes you don't even get to grasp the sudden turn that life takes, twisting everything in a way you had never imagined to be possible. Many a times, it feels like life has turned away from you, seizing every possible wish and dreams you probably have and would want to live all your life. And at times, it happens that you're blessed with something you have always dreamed of but knew would never turn into reality, in the most surprising manner! One example is the current incident occurring in Sonakshi's life...

After getting discharged from the hospital, Sonakshi felt like she's living in a completely different world. Err...no. Scratch that. It felt like she's living in a dreamland. Everything that was occurring around her was something her heart had only dared to imagine with the mentality of never turning it into reality. But catching it infront of her own eyes was getting too overwhelming for her.

For once, she felt like she didn't know this Dev. He had become a completely different person after that incident. Just a mere warning from the doctor that she shouldn't be in the heat as it might cause breathing attack easily, and he went on installing an air conditioner in her room the very next day. Just a simple prescription as any patient would receive after any kind of treatment from the doctor and he went on following it so obediently as if it was him who is suffering from the disease and not her. He has set so many rules and obligations for her to follow that sometimes she felt like she is a school going kid who is now forbidden from doing her favorite acts. Well, stepping into the kitchen was definitely one of them. He had strictly asked her not to enter the kitchen or cook anything for him or any members in the family until he thinks she's back to being fit and fine. He would check on her every now and then to make sure she's fine. And his protectiveness regarding her health had reached to such extent that he had gifted her a phone the very next day Sonakshi was discharged from the hospital

"What is this?", her eyebrows scrunched up in confusion

Putting his hands in pocket, he gestured her to open the box.

And as she did, her eyes widened.

"Phone?"

"You're keeping it with you all the time."

"B-but why?"

Rolling his eyes, he ordered, "No questions. Do as I say. And did you have your medicine after your breakfast?"

Sonakshi nodded, too overwhelmed at his enquiries regarding her health, that too from the person she'd give up her life for.

"I'm gonna leave now. Absolutely no stepping into the kitchen. You are to have your breakfast, lunch AND dinner on time. And anything you need, page kichu, and he will be at your service. I repeat, NO cooking until I say otherwise. Are we clear?"

Would she be lying if she says she felt like the luckiest girl on earth, at that moment? Didn't she always want someone to care for her even if it is just for a few minutes? Didn't she always have the urge to be pampered in the last 10 years of her life, when all she got was taunts in return? It might sound like some strict instruction he asked her to follow, but the fact that he did it for her and because of her health, meant the world to her.

"Ji", she nodded.

Sonakshi's web of thoughts was interrupted as her phone beeped, letting her heart go on a marathon yet once again, knowing very well who the text came from.

"Lunch?"

"Will be having in an hour. All okay at home?"

Hypocrite! He wants me to have lunch at 1:00 pm on the dot and it's almost 2 o'clock and he still didn't eat!

Furrowing her eyebrows, upset at how he never takes care of his health, she put her phone away, choosing not to reply to his text, disappointed at his carelessness.

Served him right! she concluded, lifting her chin up.

The very next moment, her phone started buzzing constantly, startling her, as she wondered what might have happened in these two minutes that he had to call. And before she could pick up and answer, she was buried with a list of questions.

"What the hell is wrong with you? Why were you not replying to my texts? Are you alright? Are...a-are you having breathing problem again? Dammit! Why are you not saying anything?!"

With her eyes blurring uncontrollably, she tried to voice out an assurance that she's fine, in vein. How could she? Just a few minutes of delay and he had gone all insane imagining all the possibilities that might have happened to her. Sniffing, she couldn't help chuckling silently.

"Goddammit! A-are you crying? Are you in pain? Just hold up, I'm on my way. I-"

"I'm fine...I'm totally fine. I was about to reply when...you called."

She finally interrupted and gave a rest to his never ending worries. Smiling as she heard him let out a sigh of relief, her heart swelled with an overpowering joy knowing that it was her he was concerned about...so much that she could reckon the fact that he had been holding his breath while continuing his never ending inquiries.

"Did you take the medicines you were supposed to take after lunch?"

"Yes I did. Don't worry about me so much. I'm honestly fine now"

She reassured him with the smile intact in her face, as she ran her fingers over the childhood photo of them. She chuckled silently at his perfect businessman pose with his chest swelled, chin up, hands crossed over his chest with an ever serious expression... only if he had an idea what was going on behind him. Sonakshi had made a horn over his head with her two fingers and he had no clue about it. Her chest rumbled with laughter.

"Well, how about you leave that to me to decide, hmm?" , came his stern reply making her pout.

Khadoos!

"Kay, Have a meeting to attend!"

"Su-suniye...!"

After a momentary silence, Sonakshi managed herself to utter what she had been holding back for so long.

"Aap...woh...Aap l-lunch kar lijiye na. It's already so late. And you will start having headache if you...are in empty stomach for too long..."

She nothing but prayed that he doesn't take it any other way. Crossing her fingers, clutching her heart, she waited impatiently for his reply. After what felt like eternity, Sonakshi finally let out the breath she had been holding on all this while , flashing her teeth as she heard a little "hmm" from the other end before he disconnected the call.

Adi had been noticing Dev since morning. He had never picked up his mobile for personal calls or text messages unless it is an emergency. Briefing him about the meeting to Adi, Dev mentioned the major points that must be mentioned during the powerpoint presentation when his eyes caught the time in the wall clock. 1:20 pm. Picking up his phone, he texted her to make sure she is following the rules he had set for before leaving for work. He was about to explain the statistics to Adi when the phone beeped. Unlocking the screen as he read the reply, he sighed and turned off the lock screen when another message popped on.

"You? 😳 "

His insides nothing but filled with a certain tranquility at the little inquiry she did. Well she had always been profound when it came to his health, hadn't she? In her own unique way though...just like she made him have his dinner and medicines by the poolside that day. And he still couldn't figure out why she had built such a special interest with the smileys while replying to his texts. Such a baby!

Typing away the reply quickly, he finally concentrated back to the powerpoint, unaware of the scrutiny of his PA all this while. Adi didn't miss the sudden curve of his lips as he typed away something on his phone ever so attentively.

"So where was I?", Dev asked, interrupting his thoughts.

"on your phone...", Adi replied subconsciously.

Looking at his boss who looked at him with an eyebrow raised, he bit his tongue at the slip of tongue. Fixing his specs, he stuttered, "I...I m-mean, strategy sir. You were explaining the strategy."

Adi gave a nervous laugh before he huffed a sigh as he realized he was spared from the rebuke of his boss this time. It hadn't been 5 minutes, and his boss went back on checking his phone, turning on his lock screen every 10 seconds, probably expecting someone's reply. A pink hue reached up Adi's neck, covering his ears as his wicked mind played its role...someone! *cough cough*. He mentally slapped his head at his stupidity. Boss and girlfriend? Only possible when Dev Dixit starts giving a rest to his invariably steaming hot brain.

But the very next moment Adi almost jumped off his chair as Dev stoop up from his chair and made another victim of him outburst but this time, his voice bordered with strange desperation, making him curious to learn about THE call.

"What the hell is wrong with you? Why were you not replying to my texts? Are you alright? Are...a-are you having breathing problem again? Dammit! Why are you not saying anything?!"

He just stared with his mouth agape at the restless being that kept walking back and forth. Not replying to my texts? Breathing problem? He had cut the name of Ishwari from the list of possible family members he could be talking because one, he doesn't talk with that tone to her, two as far as he knows she is not into phones and texting. The sisters perhaps?

"Goddammit! A-are you crying? Are you in pain? Just hold up, I'm on my way. I-"

His face was red, his forehead was covered with beads of sweat and he was lingered with a sudden affliction that he could certainly relate to...he could see the same torment he witnesses everytime they fail to pin point a cue that would help them proceed further in Sonakshi's case. He had taken his coat and was ready to storm out of the office door when his feet halted. And unlike the agonized stares he had been throwing all this while, he looked genuinely pacified all of a sudden. Closing his eyes, he breathed out a sigh as though he had been holding it for eternity.

As the conversation went on with Dev's stern replies, he didn't fail to notice the lingering concern with every reply of him. And he definitely didn't fail to notice the gleam in his eyes and the smile in his face before he ended the discussion with a stony "hmm" that everything but gave away the sternness he tried so hard to maintain in his voice. However, one look at his face and it screamed the immense triumph that he was trying so hard to contain.

And Adi didn't even realize when started grinning like an idiot, flashing his teeth, clutching the files to his chest.

"What?"

Shutting his mouth, composing himself, Adi cleared his throat.

"Aunty ji?"

"He looked at his phone before replying, "No.."

"Oh to Ria ya Nikki hongi hai na?"

"Let's get back to the presentation, shall we?", he ordered wth his eyebrows raised, an underlying warning much evident in his command.

"O-of..course boss!"
