DevAkshi SS: Hidden
Chapter 1:
Radha Rani: You daughter of a *****! Is that how you work?! Are we keeping you in this mansion, providing you with your basic necessities just so you can break my expensive tea cup sets?!
Radha Rani, Dev's Mami, has been the head of the Dixit mansion ever since Dev left for Canada with his mother, Ishwari , and three sisters Neha, Ria and Nikki 10 years ago. After Radha's husband's death, Ishwari brought her and her son, Karan in the Dixit Mansion. Being the only immediate family member, Radha Rani, and her son were asked to stay and look after the Mansion until they return from abroad, finishing Dev's Post grad studies.
Grasping the perfect opportunity, Radha Rani left no stone unturned to assert her power and position in this mansion, misbehaving with and insulting the servants in Dixit mansion to no ends. Sonakshi having no influencial background and absolutely no one to back her up, Radha used her to get all kind of household chores done, from making light snacks to cleaning the house, not caring her young age, nor her health.
Sonakshi Bose was brought to Dixit Mansion at the age of 9, when her parents passed away in a Car accident. Her mother being Ishwari's best friend and the only close relative in the Town gave Ishwari the legal right to bring her in the Mansion and take her responsibility. Dev and Sonakshi bonded in no time and became the support for each other in the simplest matter i.e. Dev being 3 years older than her would help her with her school work, while she would be his emotional support and pillar of strength whenever he broke down thinking of his deceased father. They'd share everything and anything with each other, Three years passed like a blink of eye and Dev and his family left for Canada, with Ishwari handing Sonakshi's responsibility to Radha Rani, since she didn't have her passport ready and it would take another year or two to receive her passport and other legal documents.
Dev pulling Sonakshi s red nose: Bose! I will be back in no time. Please stop those big fat tears. You know I can't stand'em.
Sonakshi nodded vigorously wiping her tears with the back of her palm in vein.
Leaving sonakshi back alone with Mamiji only was the last thing he wanted but having left with no choice, he had to agree with Ishwari on going abroad, not to mention, after having a heated argument with his mother and later on, being assured that she will be just fine here and would be provided with all the facilities and education. Nevertheless, the sudden hollowness at the thought of leaving sonakshi for such a long time and his best friend's never ending tears just made everything worse. He felt an unknown sickness in the gut and he thought he was leaving a part of him behind, that can only be filled when he's with her.
Ever since Sonakshi entered this house, she had become an unavoidable crucial part of his life. He was never an easy one to mingle with, since his father's sudden death. Initially, he would lock himself up to avoid social interaction, not just with Sonakshi but with everyone else except her mother. He never opened himself up infront of his sisters either, nor did he have the fun childhood that other normal kids of his age usually have. Once, Sonakshi saw him crying by the pool side. He was 12 then, a few months after she came to the Dixit mansion. And the way he was crying his heart out, Sonakshi felt like it was her living through the nightmare of her parent's death yet once again. She took small hesitant steps with her tiny feet towards the pool side. She was scared to talk to him, since they never really had a proper conversation ever since she came. She remembered she used to smile at him and he would just ignore her and go to his room. Coming by his side, she lifted her floral printed- knee-length frock and knelt down to sit beside him. She poked him with her tiny index finger and it was enough for him to acknowledge her presence. Wiping his tears with his palms he was about to leave when she caught his two fingers with her chubby ones. And what she said afterwards was all a shattered heart needed to mend itself.
"You're locking yourself up, and not interacting with anyone. But tell me, how is it going to solve your problem? Is locking yourself up taking your sadness away, Mr AB? No. Is not interacting with anyone giving you the joy that a 12 years old teenager get when he goes to the park to play with his friends? Nope! Are you helping your family anyway by not talking to your sisters properly? Uh-uh! Is not opening up yourself to your mother or anyone else and keeping all the grief inside you helping you come out of your shell? Absolutely nah! Then tell me, Mr AB, what good is it doing to you? Aunty says, you're a brilliant student, always topping in your class. But ever since I came to this house, I never saw you going to school or doing your homework. I understand, you're sad because of what happened to uncle, but just staying home and locking yourself up will only increase... increase... err... increase *scratching her head* dissection . It will increase aunty's dissection . Do you want that to happen, Mr. AB?"
And Dev couldn't for the love of his life understand how this incredibly mature thought hit her tiny 9 years old brain! All he did was stare at her chubby face for the next 2 minutes with his mouth agape.
Getting no response from him, Sonakshi poked him with her index finger again.
Sonakshi: you...you there Mr. AB?
Snapping out of his thought, he composed himself.
Dev: Errr... Yeah. I just...
Sonakshi: So tell me Mr. AB, do you want to increase your and aunty's dissection?
Dev: dissection?
Sonakshi: you don't know what dissection is?
Dev shook his head.
Sonaskshi stared at him as if he grew horns in his head.
Sonakshi: err.. No problem! I will explain. Sometimes, it gets hard to remember such complicated words hehe! dissection means, like, you know , when people feel very sad for a long time and don't know how to .. how to come out from that grief? That's dissection. Got it?
Dev: You mean... depression?
Sonakshi stared at him for awhile and then started glancing at everything but him.
Sonakshi: errr... yeah. De..depression!
And dev felt like laughing his head off at the hilariously cute expression she gave. Her chubby cheeks had become tomato red all of a sudden making her look utterly adorable.
Sonakshi: Hey! Don't laugh at me! I.. I knew that word. I just messed up.
Chuckling softly, he pulled her right cheek: You're cute!
Sonakshi grinned: I know, I get that a lot. I assume people find me cute because of my chubby cheeks that turn into tomato red without warning. It is quite embarrassing though. My nose turns red when I cry too.
Dev chuckled a little more: you cry too?
Sonakshi: Mhm. Everyone needs to let their grief out of their system and you can only do that by crying your heart out and sharing your pain with someone else. Trust me, Mr AB, it feels better! You should try.
Dev: What's with this Mr. AB?
Sonakshi: Oh that's you!
Dev raising an eyebrow: Me?
Sonakshi shrugged: Yeah! Mr. AB means Mr. Angry Bird. I never saw you smiling. Always making that straight face, giving an impression that you're ready to punch or smack someone right now. Your huge pointy nose even resembles the angry birds'. And Angry bird is a bit too huge of a name for me to call you every day. So I made it short: Mr. AB.
She lifted her chin, proud of her amazing ability to come up with perfect names.
And dev didn't know if he should laugh at her innocence or bang his head at the name she chose for him.
Dev: wow! That's quite.. thoughtful of you! *frowing* thanks!
And that was the start of the eternal friendship and beautiful bond of the two broken hearts who had suffered so much in such a young age. While dev would help her with all her school work, being the perfect tutor that she just needed, and be the protective friend, always guarding her from being bullied at school because of her chubbiness, Sonakshi would always become his emotional support with her perfect "mature" way to mend all his sorrows, and giving him the necessary advices he needed in almost everything he did. While ishwari got busy with the office work since she was the only one to income in the family, Dev started getting closer to sonakshi, always being with her, having breakfast and dinner together, making sure she ate exactly how a normal 9 year old should eat, and not control her diet because of the bullies at school.
And now that Dev is leaving for Canada, She couldn't for the sake of their friendship gather herself and fathom how she would survive the upcoming years without her best friend's support!
Stopping his eyes from blurring, Dev sighed and pulled her close, wiping her never ending tears with his thumb.
Dev: And, I'm going to call you everyday. It will never feel like I ever left you, bose! AND if you care to stop your tears for a few minutes, I could show you something.
Looking into his eyes, Sonakshi stared at him utterly confused. Dev went to his cupboard and took out what seemed like a bag. He came back and handed it to her.
Dev: open it!
Sonakshi started at him and he shook his head, urging her to open the bag. As she did, her eyes became as big and round as saucers. A Macbook! She wanted one all her life. Especially, ever since she saw Dev using it. But never did she word it to him.
Dev chuckled at her face she looked at him with: yes for you!
After inspecting it properly, she realized, it was the Macbook Dev has always used.
Sonakshi: But... but it's yours. What will you use?
Rolling his eyes, he placed his hands on either side of her tiny shoulder: Didn't I tell you, everything that's mine is yours? Plus I'm gonna get one soon before I leave for canada today. So don't worry about me. I know you had your eyes on this since the first day. And I'm mainly giving it to you now so that we keep in touch with each other all the time. I have made a skype account for you. So now we can see each other whenever we want to and you will never get to miss me! Okay, Bose?
And you could just tell from her face that she was grateful for this blessing named Dev in her life. Utterly thankful to god, not because of his expensive Macbookthat he just gave away, but for his thoughtfulness when it comes to her. As soon as she realized that she'll be able to see him whenever she want to, she felt like a huge burden had been lifted off her shoulder.
Sonakshi hugging her laptop as if that's the only precious possession she's got: Tha...Thank you AB. I love it!
Dev: uh huh! That's not the only thing I got for you.
Sonakshi looked at him confused.
Dev took out a small box from his khaki shorts. He opened her hands and placed the box.
Dev: c'mmon open it quickly. It's almost time to leave.
Sonakshi opened the box to find a silver colored diamond shaped pendant. It kept sparkling, just like her her eyes twinkled seeing it.
Sonakshi gulping: you got it for... me?
Dev sighed rolling his eyes: Nah! I got it for this invisible fairy that happens to be in my room right now and with whom I have been talking all this while now.
Sonakshi chuckled.
"Dev, come down beta, it's time to leave! We're getting late"
As ishwari's voice echoed, sonakshi's eyes started blurring, yet once again at the thought of the upcoming seperation: I will miss you Dev.
Dev! He knew Sonakshi only calls him Dev instead of Mr. AB when she gets emotional.
As a lone tear fell from his left eye, he wiped it quickly and pulled her into a tight hug. The very first time she felt his warmth! Their first hug and not for once did she fill the slightest hesitance. It felt so comforting, so warm and so...right!
Digging her face in his chest, she sobbed further.
Closing his eyes, he uttered with utmost tender: will miss you too, doll!
