HI All,
I know the forum has been buzzing owing to the blossoming romance between Dev and Sona and more so due to her accident.

I wanted to start a discussion about something that keeps sticking out to me. Mami and her motor mouth is not new however she seems to keep harping on Sona being Bengali. Every now and then you'll here her address Sona as "aye bangalan!"

Mami made a comment earlier about bengali girls being "tez" bengali girls marrying later - even yesterday when Mama was ready to leave and Ishwari was trying to smooth things over - Mami goes "bangalan to hai chant" or something like that.

I don't know if its Mami or the show or a reflection of how Indians from other states perceive bengalis but it doesn't sit well with me.

I'm bengali and I've spent the majority of my life abroad so I'm not really sure what the perception of bengalis are by other communities. We all know the stereotypes that bollywood emphasises - "Eeesh", "fish loving" "football madness" "being a bit bookish" we all know of those - but these more subtle stereotypes - of bengalis being more "forward" which i think should be rephrased as "progressive" for which bengali girls get married "later"

Does anyone else feel this way?

Well its this illiterate people who cannot understand the difference between forward and progressive..

Dev did say woh ek doctor hai... he is literate...and so his sisters...
Ishwari and Dev's Mami.. are all small minds.. thats why they say forward... to taunt Bengali's.

Sorry to hear that u feel bad... but u know this is how the Illiterate and narrow minded Indians perceive... Lets hope this serial can make a positive change towards this thought pattern...

I agree. It is just Mami who does it. But stereotypes are there for everyone. I am not naming any, but some shows stereotype Tamilians in a certain manner. I have loads of South Indian friends who aren't like that. It is just a potrayal. Don't take it seriously. Definitely it is wrong. But Mami is doing it. Who cares about her? 😆

Agreed with you completely👍🏼
From the very first day, i feel angry with the way they call Sona a bengali as if its a slang...I'm myself a ''bangalan'' living in Kolkata😎 A pure Bong😃
And yes that Mami is a torture to my senses...Bengali families support their daughters to make them independent and that's something to be proud of

I am very sorry you're feeling that way. But I don't think the serial makers are trying to show something against Bengalis. It is the mindset of the older generation people like Mami and Ishwari. People relate everything about a person to their caste, community or religion. The same happens in flms where the leads belong to 2 different states, like in 2 states. Just because the leads' parents don't approve of something, they say something related to the other person's state. It is just their mindset.

But not once do we hear Dev speaking anything about her being Bengali. The younger generations don't think of such things at all.

And we all love Sona for who she is. Not because she is a Bengali or not a Bengali. Period.

Sorry if you felt bad.

P.S. I feel Bengali people are class apart when it comes to art and literature. I am great fan of lots of Bengali writers. And I would love to visit Kolkata someday!
