Chapter 13
Arjun sat staring at his new book. His new wonder! His next success! But everything seemed so void without her! So empty! Eight years! Eight years without her! How did he survive? Felt impossible for him! Where were you my jaan? My Arohi! This was Arjun's thoughts for past eight years. Sometimes he would go back to those times when everything was so perfect. When he was so proud of the fact that hothead Arohi was his. When she was proud of him! Everything changed in a swift of time... Sometimes in our life there would be few surprise bumps, bumps which would throw you off from your life. To the outside world he had a perfect life. A successful career in writing, loving parents and a close circle of friends and a sister in Shefali. But the public never knew whatever they saw as his was hers. Who they saw as his parents was hers, his friends were hers and Shefali whom the world knew as his sister was hers. His parents were never supportive of him but they did understand later that this was his destiny. The only people who supported him from the beginning were his friends, Gauri and Romit, his cousins. And Arohi's family. But she? She loved him. He knew that. But he didn't know why she left but he had a vague idea and that was why he left their town. He couldn't be where there was no Arohi. Wherever she was he knew she was still his. He just needed to find her and erase all the bad things. This positive attitude had kept him going all these years. She would be 27 by now just as he was! Had she completed her studies? After all she left at the end of her 2nd year. Had she become mature? Or still that crazy hothead? Arjun slowly took his new book and opened it. On the dedication page was one sentence...
To my jaan, to my hothead...
People had asked him to whom did he refer to and always he had one reply... to my jaan! Sometimes media had jokingly accused him of breaking many girls' hearts but if only they knew he himself was broken and shattered. The only reason he was a writer because he had once promised his jaan that he will never let his dream go. He had fulfilled his promise. Would she be proud of him? Every time he went to other cities for promotion he would look for that one face in strange crowds and every time he was disappointed. But he believed one day he would find her. Arjun took Arohi's photo from his desk and smoothly moved his fingers over her face, her smiling face. How beautiful she looked! Every time he went out to the world he had always felt that she was watching him. Praying for him. Otherwise he would never have made it! Oh how much he missed her! Just come back dear! I wouldn't ask you any questions! I will forget these eight years like it never happened! Just come back and we will make a happy life together! Come back...
Arjun stood up and walked to his window. Today was Shefali's birthday and he had promised her that her brother would take her to a vacation. Sudhir and Amrit couldn't come along so it was just them and their friends who would be going to that hill station in two days time. He could only make time after two days. Shefali was truly a great sister. When he was broken down after Arohi left she took care of him and made him realize he needed to search for Arohi. He owed that to her. Everyone was so supportive of him. He thrived because of them and he wondered how Arohi survived without her near and dear. A puzzling question it had become for him. Neither his nights nor his days passed without him questioning himself. Sometimes he took the walk back to those days. He still remembered the most important night of his life when Arohi kissed him on the cheek. He was stunned and totally mesmerized. He was unable to sleep the whole night. He turned and tossed in his bed visualizing and reliving that kiss for a thousandth time in his mind. That night Arjun took out his phone and laid on his bed looking at her picture in his phone and trying to decide whether to call Arohi or not. He was mostly worried about her reaction. What if she just kissed him as a friend? Was he reading too much into it? He was confused. If he had known within few days his world was going to turn upside down he would have called her that moment itself and not had waited for the daybreak...
He called her the next morning trying to sound not too excited or too normal. He didn't want his chance to slip away. As usual they met in their park. He was fumbling with words trying to choke out his heart. Why was it so difficult to speak your heart at crucial times? He wasn't the scared type but at that precise moment he was a scared little kid who wanted to ask for his favourite candy but couldn't bring himself up to it. He again fumbled with words and this time he thought he saw a suppressed smile on her face. He frowned and stared at her but nevertheless continued the possible but difficult task. To his relief Arohi spoke,
"You want to say something Arjun? About last night..."
"Oh yes!" Finally Arjun was able to say something.
"You know you look like a fish out of water! You should see your face! And you don't need to worry about that kiss! You don't have to wonder 'whether she kissed me because I am her good friend or did she like me?'. Let me tell you I have never kissed any of my friends before not even Vanshi! If I didn't kiss my bestie then you should know why I did that to you!"
"Why?" Arjun was in teasing mood as his greatest question got answered.
"Oh! You want to tease me? You want me to say it naa? Ok! Let's do it! Here it is... I love... I love... I love LAST NIGHT!!!"
"WHAT?!!" Arjun was bewildered.
"You heard me! I just loveeed last night! You know all those fun and enjoyment! Believe me I have never enjoyed like this before!" Arohi said with a sly smile.
"You loved only last night? Nothing else?" Arjun still couldn't believe it.
"Yep! What else should I say?" Arohi was still in the mood to tease.
"Hmm... nothing! Let's just go! We are getting late for college!"
"Ok!"
Once in their class and after being settled down Arohi nudged Arjun.
"What happened? Why are you so gloomy?" Arohi asked with an innocent face.
"Nothing! Cold!" Arjun said with a fast pace though he wanted to say "Oh! As if you don't know!"
Arohi hid her giggles and with a straight face asked him, "Did you take medicine?"
Arjun was now full on irritated. "Why do you care? It's not like I am your boyfriend!"
"Yeah you are right! You are not my boyfriend! How will you be? You couldn't even say to me that you love me!" Arohi said with an unusually straight face.
Arjun looked at her like he had seen a ghost. Ok! Did she just say she loved me? Or did she say I love her? Confusing!
"You love me? Or I love you?" Arjun asked still confused.
"What do you think idiot?" Arohi asked exasperated.
"Hmm... that you love me? You do love me naa?" Arjun asked to make sure.
"Oh my God! If it was someone else they would have got it in seconds! Should I spell it out for you stupid? I LOVE YOU! Happy? I am fed up!" Arohi finally gave in.
"We haven't yet started our relationship and you are exhausted? Not good!" Arjun said grinning!
Arohi smacked him in his hands and asked, "You still wouldn't say it naa? Stubborn!"
"Stubborn and me? I was trying to say it from how long I don't know! It was you who was driving me crazy! But I love you like that! Actually I love you in any way! I love you so much!" Saying this Arjun pulled her cheeks like she was a small kid!
"Hey! Don't do that! I am not a small kid...
A small wind brought him back to his present stark reality. He was not there. He was not with her. He was here. In this strange city of madness where everything was a rush and a race. Somehow he didn't lose himself here. Arjun made his way back to his desk from the window side and took his phone out to make sure their flight tickets were reserved. They would have to take a flight first followed by a small train journey. He really wanted to go someplace where he won't be recognized and won't be forced to suffocation being the centre of everyone's attraction. In every journey he thought about her. Once he almost got near to her, thanks to some friends but she slipped away. She was like a slippery edge. You would feel it's manageable but not really... After this journey he would resume his search for her in full swing. The new book had really stolen his precious time which he should have spent in search of her. He needed this journey to end as early as possible. This long journey...
At about this time someplace far a woman of 27 was tending to the wounds of a small boy. She was a beautiful woman with her silky long hair tied into a loose ponytail, a few strands falling into her face. She was wearing a red long skirt having golden borders and a white sleeveless top with golden and red embroidery along her neckline. She also had a red shawl around her neck. She had small golden hoops on her ears and a small golden nose ring. She had a thin golden chain around her neck which was barely visible. Her left hand sported a big black watch and on her right hand was a thin golden bangle bracelet. She steadied the boy whose wounds were dressed and told him to get rest. She walked through the corridors of 'Saans', an NGO that tended to the needs of young children who had no one else in this world. She was a volunteer for this organization for almost seven years. She became a part of it by sheer luck and wished to serve its purpose for the rest of her life. She stepped into the courtyard only to be stopped by someone whose sound registered the fact that the person was running.
"Arohi! Stop! I need to talk to you!"
"What is it Sur?" Arohi asked in her calm voice.
"Well there are two things! First, Mina ma'am called and said this year she wants us to go to that hill station with the kids for the vacation! I mean our ma'am is so thoughtful! She built this institution and every year she sends the kids to vacation! Who else could be as caring as her?" Sur said in ecstasy.
"Yeah I know! But what is the other thing you want to say?" Arohi asked.
"Oh yeah! Here! Your parcel as send by my cousin! Your favourite writer Arjun Singhania's new wonder! I really don't know how addicted you are to him? You follow his every news! It's like you love him" Sur said in a matter-of-fact tune and went away to some kids playing in the corner of the yard.
Arohi looked at Sur who had walked away and said, "You have no idea how much I love him! And how much I have hurt him! I could only wish to be forgiven!"
