Hey guys, I'm back with chapter 9 - Arjun's POV. Hope we can look into what's going on inside that arrogant head of his, and find out what he really feels for Arohi:
CHAPTER 9: I HATE SISTERS
Why in the world did I let that stupid Gurpreet talk me into this? Just because she is Hardeep's sister, she thinks she can boss us around as much as she wants? And group dance?? Regular dance toh itni mushkil se hota hai, ye couple dance ka funda kya hai? Will have to dance with some silly girl? I hope she's not a silly bimbo!
Arjun didn't realize he had said his last sentence out loud.
"Arre tujhe kaunsa uske saath romance karna hai, dance hi toh hai, kar lena."
This was Aditya, the self proclaimed stud of third year, and his best pal.
"Dude, you don't get it. I'm allergic to silly girls. I can't stand at one meter's distance from a bimbo!"
"Agar ek meter door nahi khada reh sakta to chipak jana," Aditya laughed at his own joke.
Arjun ignored his pj. "And I hope koi nerdy behenji types bhi na ho. What a bore they are!"
"Yaar Arjun, you have too many hang-ups. Aise toh you are ruling out 99.99% of all the girls in this hall."
Arjun looked around the hall... the guys and girls were a mix of students from all years. He knew most faces, considering that he was in the final year. However, there were some fresh faces. And there was this one girl from the freshers party, a particular girl whose name he didn't remember, but he remembered her face all right. He remembered well that she had refused his instruction, which was to use a very graphic and vulgar swear word on another fresher batchmate of hers, a boy. She had behaved like such a miss-goody-two-shoes, even for such mild ragging. He hated spoilsports, especially those who thought they were too good for those around them.
"Arjun Kakkar and Arohi Batra," Gurpreet called out. Arohi Batra? He definitely didn't know any Arohi Batra, so she was certainly a fresher. Arjun saw a girl in yellow t-shirt and long straight hair tied into a ponytail, walking towards Gurpreet.
He couldn't see her properly from where he stood at the back of the hall. As he walked closer, he realized she was the same spoilsport from first year. Oh great.
She didn't look half as bad as she did with the oiled hair and two braids that all the fresher girls had during the fresher party. And she was looking at him with some dismay, as if she was expecting prince charming and was landed with an ogre instead. Such airs, I'll teach you a lesson, Arjun thought.
"Arre yaar, kisi aisi-waisi ka partner mat bana. Koi apne batch ki hottie leke aa na," he said to Gurpreet, and then watched as the fresher girl's expression changed from dismay to anger. That'll teach her!
What took him by surprise was that after the first few moments she quickly recovered and held out her hand. "Arohi Batra. Guess you're just stuck with me."
I'm not going to have some little girl have the last word. Besides, I really don't want to interact with a girl like her, he thought. And she doesn't even remember me from the fresher party!
"I guess," he shrugged and left the hall.
But she was as stubborn as a donkey. She actually followed him out. And demanded that he come back to the practice. So he told her clearly that he wasn't interested to be her dance partner. And it would have worked, too. If only it hadn't been for that goddamned Gurpreet with all her threatening and bossiness.
He hated Hardeep's sister.
When he made it back to the hall, he saw people standing in their positions. Brilliant, now I have missed the first steps as well, he thought. Guess I'll have to ask her.
He did, and in turn she replied with infuriating stupidity. In his frustration, he grabbed her hand involuntarily. He was only trying to make her see his point. And when she haltingly told him that they were all only just learning the formation, he realized she was pretty when she was shy. Very pretty. Sparkling eyes fringed with long dark lashes, high cheekbones, chiselled nose and lips that reminded him of candy. Strawberry candy.
And then she asked him to leave her hand.
Idiot, he told himself, and quickly let go and wiped his sweaty hand on his denims. Did she think his hand was too clammy? Did she find him too forward? From the look on her face and how she maintained a distance from him the rest of the evening, he could tell that she wasn't exactly thrilled about it.
He wasn't particularly sure what he thought about her. She hadn't seemed like anyone special or worth his time initially. But there was a spark in her, a radiance that he noticed only when he spent more time with her, of course unwillingly. It was almost as if something unseen was pulling his attention towards her. C'mon Arjun, he told himself. How can you behave like this? It's not like you've never seen girls!
Yet, he couldn't keep his eyes off her. But he was careful to avoid her, for the fear that he would creep her out. Or worse still, she would think he was interested in her. Which he obviously wasn't. Was he not? Oh hell!
Then came that evening when they had both gotten scolded for lack of chemistry and she was angry at him for making her look bad. He was annoyed by how she had put up an act of being comfortable with him, just for the sake of looking like a couple. As if she couldn't bear the thought of smiling at him but was only doing it out of compulsion. It was all he could do to not shake her by the shoulders and wipe that plastic smile off her face.
So he told her that maybe it wasn't about chemistry and maybe she was a bad dancer after all. He was pleased with himself to see the hurt pride and anger in her eyes. But it backfired when she retorted by calling him a shabby partner. "Just look at you, who'd wanna have any chemistry with a sadiyal like you," she had taunted.
No girl talked to Arjun Kakkar like that. He'll show her chemistry all right! When he pulled her close and dipped her backwards over his arm, he was doing it just to spite her. But her closeness almost cast a spell on him. The light flowery scent of her, the surprise in her eyes, the nervousness in the way she held onto him, the blush rising on her cheeks, all of it made him forget where they were. He was almost thinking how easy it would be to kiss her right then, when Gurpreet called for their attention and the spell was broken.
He really hated Hardeep's sister!
But now that he was back to reality, he quickly thought of a comeback to explain that what he had just done was only to show to Arohi that he could create chemistry with any girl he wanted to. He couldn't very well let her think he was gonna kiss her for real! And then Arohi gave him a slap in the face (not literally!) by saying that he had no charm whatsoever and she only played along to humor him. He should've known that she would deny whatever happened just like he did, but when she actually said it, it really felt odd. It almost deflated him and he felt a bit hurt. Come now, he thought. What were you expecting? You thought she would just look at you with a sad, hurt expression and ask you to please kiss her?
Despite their daily squabbles, he found her oddly fascinating. She looked petite and delicate, but when she fought, she could spit fire. One moment she looked like she was having a great time, the next moment she looked miserable. Of course, she was happy when she was with her friends, and miserable when she was with him. And that made him want to make her more miserable. If she thought he made her unhappy, that is what he would make her.
But each time she smiled at someone, he wished she would smile like that at him. That warm, beautiful smile which was enough to make a guy stutter. It frustrated him to no end why she wouldn't smile at him like that, or talk to him in the animated way she would with her friends. Even though they were dance partners, and had been spending time practicing together for so many weeks now, she still reserved her smiles for others. While their conversations were short and full of barbwires.
Her obstinacy drove him mad, but he also admired her for it. Like that time late in the night when she had been adamant to go to the dry cleaner's by herself. He had to literally force her to come with him. She really was stupid. Why would a girl want to go out late in the night all alone, just so she could return a jacket? But then, maybe it was his fault for having provoked her into deciding to do such a thing by taunting her for ruining his jacket. He felt responsible for making her decide that, and so he insisted he accompanied her.
Except that later, when she sat behind him clutching at his shirt, trying in vain to avoid body contact, her hair flying around her face each time she leaned forward to give him directions, Arjun forgot that the only reason he was out there with her was because it was the correct and responsible thing to do. He wanted to zip and zoom and do wheelies, and other bike stunts. He was nervous and excited at the same time.
And later, when they were relaxed and weather was awesome, he picked the nerve to ask her for dinner. Of course, in a totally cool and casual way. And she agreed. That made him happy. He had taken her to Momo Station at Carter Road and for a walk down the promenade there.
He had thoroughly enjoyed himself. Which was surprising. Usually, he found girls a bit tiresome to entertain, even when he was dating them. But with Arohi, he liked talking to her, teasing her, watching the myriad expressions flit across her face. He loved to see her laugh, the way her eyes twinkled when she did. He liked her simple straightforward manner. She wasn't like other girls who either fell all over him or avoided him alltogether. She was neither too wild nor too tame. He found it intriguing. He found her refreshingly sweet. And that scared him a little.
But that didn't deter him from casually hinting to her that he liked her. He didn't want to give her any ideas. But the look of utter confusion and embarrassment on her face after he said that was priceless. He went back home smiling.
"Bhai, why're you so late? You were supposed to pick me up from Paddy Aunty's house!" Rashi was standing at the end of the stairs, clearly irritated.
"Oh crap! I forgot. Sorry," Arjun replied and started walking up the stairs to his bedroom.
"Do you realize how irritating it was to hear that stupid Natasha drone on about her ten thousand boyfriends and how she broke each one's heart?" Rashi cribbed, following him.
"That girl's still here? Wasn't she supposed to be going back to Vancouver last month?" Arjun said yawning.
"Seems like they've gotten sick of her there and kicked her back to India," Rashi said and poked Arjun's ribs as he stretched.
"Ow! Kya hai? Pareshan mat kar," he said, rubbing his side where she had poked him.
"Achha ji? Ulta chor kotwal ko daantey? Next time I'll invite Natasha over when you're here. Then you can enjoy her company as she sits on your lap and stays there all day!"
"Hey, that's never happened, okay!" Arjun said, shrugging off his jacket. But he knew the nuisance Natasha was. She had decided on her own that Arjun liked her and would behave in the most atrocious manner around him, all clingy and silly.
"Itna hi problem tha toh Saahil ko bula lena tha. Koi toh fayeda hota uske Delhi se yahan aane ka," Arjun grumbled when he saw that Rashi had followed him to his room.
"Saahil bhaiyya ko toh apni girlfriend se time mile tab na. Woh hamare se milne thode hi aaye hain Mumbai. Abhi tak Purvi di ke saath hi ghoom rahe hain."
Arjun smiled. Their cousin brother Saahil had recently gotten engaged to his long time girlfriend, Purvi Arora. The wedding was in three weeks and it was going to be held in Mumbai, from the girl's parents' home. And even though they had been seeing each other for a quite some time, ever since the marriage got fixed, both their parents insisted that they maintain a polite and formal distance. This was why Saahil had come to Mumbai on the pretext of visiting his relatives, the Kakkar family, when his real motive was to be with Purvi.
"Tum kya smile kar rahe ho, Arjun bhai? Kahin tumne bhi aaj mujhe kisi ladki ke chakkar mein ditch toh nahi maara?"
Arjun was caught unawares. He wasn't expecting such an observation from Rashi.
"Arre nahi. Aisa bhi ho sakta hai kya? Pagal ladki. Chal goodnight," he said trying to get into his room and closing the door behind him.
Rashi was quicker. She grabbed his jacket from one end and held on. There was a little tug of war and at the end of the tussle, Arjun let go of the jacket. Rashi stumbled back a little.
"Stop behaving like a kid yaar," he said, a little irritated. He really just wanted to lie down on the bed, and go over the events of that evening. Arohi and her laughter, her expression of delight while stuffing herself with momos, her hair fluttering in the sea breeze, her small warm hand cautiously resting on his shoulder, her cute little birthday song for him.
But Rashi wasn't listening. She was sniffing his jacket and when she lifted her head, she had a sly grin on her face.
"Ha! I was right, you were with a girl tonight," she said smugly.
"Oh stop speaking rubbish."
"I can smell perfume on this!"
"Must be mine."
"Since when have you started using floral perfumes??"
"Since I turned gay!" Arjun joked and pulled his jacket from her hands. He quickly closed the door of his bedroom and exhaled in relief.
But Rashi wasn't going to give up. He could hear her through the closed door, "Bhai, I won't let you get away with this. I'm gonna find out who's this girl. Just you wait and watch!"
Oh man! He really hated sisters!!
~ to be continued ~
