CHAPTER 1: SADIYAL
"C'mon, it'll be fun!"
"No yaar, I told you I won't participate in that stupid dance."
"But why're you being like this? Please Arohi, don't be a spoil sport now! Audition mein toh itne enthu ke saath part liya tha. Ab jab selection ho gaya, now you don't wanna dance?"
"I wanted a solo performance. And they've selected me for a group dance!"
"But see all the cute boys who'll dance with us! I'm sure you'll get a very cute dance partner."
"Shut up!"
It was a very warm evening and bollywood numbers were blaring from the speakers placed in the activity hall. Arohi wiped her forehead and neck for the tenth time and then finally tied up her long hair into a low ponytail. She was still wondering why she had let Shefali talk her into taking part in the inter-collegiate dance competition. Especially a mixed group dance - she didn't want to dance with some stupid boy!
She looked around the room and spotted a few unfamiliar faces, some scary looking senior boys whom she remembered from the fresher party, and silently prayed that she wouldn't get paired up with any of them.
"Ok fine, now everyone pay attention," said the self-appointed choreographer, Gurpreet from 3rd year. "Now I'm going to select partners for everyone."
One by one, Gurpreet paired up the boys and girls. Arohi checked her watch. Shefali was late as usual. Arohi fished out her cellphone from her pocket and typed a furious 'whr r u, come fast'. She had just finished sending it off, when she heard Gurpreet call out her name.
"...and Arohi, both of you come here."
She slowly walked up to the front of the hall and stood next to Gurpreet, waiting for her dance partner to come forward. Who was it? She had been so busy texting that she hadn't heard anything before her name got called out.
"Oh God, please let it not be that weird-looking tall guy in the back," she thought. He had spikey hair and was wearing a green colored t-shirt that read 'I took a pain pill, so why are you still here?'. And he was frowning and looking at her rather oddly.
"What an ugly t-shirt," she thought. "What a sadiyal-looking boy!"
To her horror, this sadiyal-looking boy had started to walk up to where she stood. He stopped right beside her and gave her a quick look-over. Then he turned away from her and spoke loudly to Gurpreet, "Arre yaar, kisi aisi-waisi ka partner mat bana. Koi apne batch ki hottie leke aa na."
Arohi froze in anger when she realized that the idiot had just insulted her. But she also realized that this idiot was apparently a senior, so she bit her tongue and kept quite. Who was this moron who thought he was a Greek God who deserved a Greek Goddess to dance with him?
"Chalo side ho jao tum dono," Gurpreet dismissed them. "Mere paas faltu time nahi hai is bakwas ka."
"Isko toh main mazaa chakhaaungi, magar baad mein. Abhi pata karti hu ki ye hai kaun," Arohi thought. She turned to him, cleared her throat, held out her hand and said, "Arohi Batra. Guess you're just stuck with me."
Sadiyal folded his arms, ignored her outstretched hand and looked at her from the corner of his eyes. Shrugging his shoulders, he said, "I guess!"
Then he made a face and walked away, towards the exit.
Gurpreet yelled after him, "Ye kya? Kahan jaa raha hai?"
Sadiyal waved without turning, leaving Arohi to fume and stare angrily at his back as he left the hall.~to be continued~
