TV nobody to Bollywood biggie: Why Sushant Singh Rajput is the next Shah Rukh Khan

With no Bollywood connection and a successful television career, the similarities in their career is uncanny

Actor Sushant Singh Rajput arrives at filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali's birthday bash. (Sanskrit Media and Entertainment)

Most Indian television actors dream of crossing over to Bollywood, but very few eventually make it to the big league.

Shah Rukh Khan would probably be the only actor living that ever eluding, quintessential Bollywood dream.

His success story is legendary. He was fairly unknown among the Bollywood crowd and had initially started out in the Delhi theatre circuit. Yet, he stepped in effortlessly, charmed the industry and the audience, and owned his spot in B-wood.

He was unstoppable, and is continuing his reign.

Now, it appears, there's another fresher to step into his shoes.

Armed with nothing more than a passion for acting, zeal to excel and a charming smile, new-actor-on-the-block Sushant Singh Rajput reminds us of the infectious, boyish-charm that SRK had exuded when he had first enthralled the Hindi movie industry.

Much like SRK, he too hails from a humble, non-Bollywood background and had lived most of his life in the rustic by-lanes of India's capital city Delhi.

Again, like King Khan he, too, was initially hooked to the city's theatre scene before attempting a career in television.

If TV serial Fauji' helped turn SRK into an overnight star, Sushant's Pavithra Rishta' has also made him an instant rage.

While, SRK moved to the movies after his second TV series Circus', Sushant took his time and enjoyed his telly space a little longer.

Probably, with so many popular TV stars unable to relive SRK's success run, Sushant might've taken his time to test the waters before taking the final plunge.

SRK burst into the scene in 1992 with romantic drama Deewana', and followed it up with Chamatkar', Idiot', Dil Aashna Hai' and the super-hit rom-com Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman'. He worked overtime and wasn't choosy, and took on any project that came his way.

Sushant, however, appears a little more discerning, and picks and chooses his projects wisely. A quality, he now attributes to SRK.

"I told Shah Rukh when I met him that I'm an actor because of him," he announced to the Indian media.

"When I used to watch his films earlier, I used to feel that acting as a profession is so powerful, you can convince people of something which you're not. Or maybe it's so larger than life and you can hide behind all these interesting and exciting characters. But I didn't take acting seriously then."

His decision to endorse fizzy drink and even, a fairness cream brand, could be attributed to SRK's influence on him.

And, much like SRK, Sushant's movie career has suddenly spiralled into dizzying heights.

After just two films - Kai Po Che' and Shudh Desi Romance' - Sushant is now hot property in Bollywood, with every known filmmaker queuing up outside his house with plum movie offers.

The latest to be smitten is renowned filmmaker Shekar Kapur, who has signed him on for Paani' after Hrithik Roshan walked out of it.

Even the illustrious Yash Raj banner, which has blatantly favoured Shah Rukh, has shown similar affection for Sushant.

While most actors are struggling to nail big projects, Sushant is already working with Aamir Khan in Peekay' and the much-anticipated Detective Byomkesh Bakshy'.

Even Sushant's love story resembles that of SRK's.

Both actors never hid their love stories and were passionate lovers off-screen as well.

Stories of how SRK wooed Gauri are legendary, much like that of Sushant's real love affair with his TV co-star Ankita Lokhande.

In fact, Sushant even claims he sought SRK's help, albeit through his movies, to learn how to woo his woman.

"I tried all the tricks I picked up from watching those romantic Shah Rukh Khan movies," he had told during one of his earlier interviews.

And, like SRK, Sushant is extremely guarded about his family, and is close to his sisters.

With so many uncanny similarities in their life on-screen and off, let's just hope Sushant remains the true (and worthy) successor to SRK's untouched supremacy.

Sushant Singh Rajput: I am happy that I am doing films today

Q1. What made you get into showbiz through television?

I actually started my acting career with theatre. I did that for five years. It was during one of my stage performances that I got noticed and was offered to work in television.

Q2. A lot of aspiring film actors treat television as a ladder to get into films. Comment.

It's just a mindset of actors in India. Internationally, there is no division between a film star and a TV star. They keep switching mediums every now and then. We need to bring about a change in this thought process here. For me, I am happy that I am doing films today, but tomorrow if I don't get the right kind of scripts then I will go back to TV, or even to theatre for that matter. I may also start my own theatre company or make short films.

Q3. Considering that you were one of the most popular stars on television (as Manav in Pavitra Rishta), did you foresee film offers coming your way?

Frankly yes, I was expecting something good to come my way. But in the end, I quit the show and it was not for a film offer. I wanted to go abroad and study at a film school. After I quit the show, I got offers for as much as seven movies, but it was Kai Po Che that attracted me the most.

Q4. Several television actors took the big leap before you. Name a few actors who you think made the transition successfully.

Ryan Gosling, George Clooney, Shah Rukh Khan, Vidya Balan and the list goes on.

Q5. What's the difference between shooting for a TV show and shooting for a movie?

Television shows go on and on. At first, it seems all very challenging because you are in the process of developing the character, but later it all becomes monotonous. A time comes when the script doesn't seem convincing enough and that's when you stop learning and discovering. This is exactly why I bid adieu to television. But yes, in televison, you get paid on per day basis, that's a huge sum!

Q6. Has shooting for a TV show helped you to perform better as an actor?

Yes, it did. Though theatre was my first encounter with acting, TV helped me to learn and improve on my camera skills. I remember being very nervous on the first day of my television show as I had no idea about the camera. I understood my character very well, but was worried how it would translate on screen. It took me six months to understand the mechanism.

Q7. Which one is faring better in terms of content in the current scenario" Indian television or Indian films?

That's the problem! Indian television is far powerful than movies when it comes to the reach, but once you start talking about the content, then Indian television lags far behind. The day the content changes, there will be a huge revolution.

Q8. What did you like watching on television while growing up?

While growing up, I was a big fan of shows like Vikram Aur Betaaland Byomkesh Bakshi. I also used to watch (Mandira Bedi starrer)Shanti. Currently I am hooked on to Gumrah, the crime series on Channel V.

Q9. So, when you and your girlfriend (popular television actress) Ankita Lokhande watch television together, who controls the remote?

(Laughs) Ankita, and she makes me watch everything that I am not interested in watching.

Q10. Any TV show, you wish you could be a part of?

I wish I could be a part of the American comedy-drama Entourage, which chronicles the acting career of Vincent Chase (Adrian Grenier), a young A-list movie star, and his childhood friends from New York City, as they navigate on unfamiliar terrain of Los Angeles.

I'm an actor because of Shah Rukh Khan'
Thu, 26 Sep 2013

Sushant Singh Rajput says that when he was younger, he would imitate the superstar when talking to girls or dancing
After signing big-banner films, Sushant Singh Rajput is being billed as the next big thing. He has even been roped in for Shekhar Kapur's Paani, where he replaced Hrithik Roshan. Sushant talks about success, pressures of stardom, live-in girlfriend Ankita Lokhande, Shah Rukh Khan, and more.

How has your life changed now?

I feel cut off from the world. But it's an exciting phase. I used to dream about working with such filmmakers (Dibakar Banerjee and Kapur), so it's a huge responsibility. I will give my 100 per cent and won't disappoint them. I've kept my phone off and am at home planning how to go about my films right now.

You and Shah Rukh Khan have many similarities " both of you are from Delhi, started with theatre, trained with Barry John and worked in TV before films.
Frankly, I'm an actor right now because of Shah Rukh. When I was in school and even when studying engineering, I used to watch his films. Shah Rukh's name was and is synonymous with romance. Whenever we spoke to girls, we used to talk like him. When I was in the eighth standard, I would dance to Suraj hua madham'. I have to achieve many things before I become even the S' of SRK.

(Okay his basic math is so far off it's like in another galaxy. Unless he really was in 8th standard at the age of 15...)

If you could act in any of SRK's TV series, which it would be?
It has to be Fauji, because the character was so relatable. At the same time, he pulled it off in such a heroic and energetic way that even if there were several actors in a frame, you would only watch Shah Rukh. You won't believe this but, four-five months back, I bought the entire DVD set of Fauji.

Don't you think you should do one masala potboiler now?
I would love to, because I love dancing. I am also trained in martial arts, so if I get to do such films, it would be a very comfortable zone for me. I am just waiting for the right script.

Your personal life must have taken a 180 degree turn too.

I am lucky that Ankita is so supportive. She is an actor herself, so she understands. She is excited about what I do as well. If you spend time with your loved ones, you get the energy to do your job better.

You are being called the next big thing. Are you excited about the tag?
I'd be lying if I say I'm not excited. It excites me to hear these things, but I forget them after two seconds. This also happens when a critic pans my work. I don't take it too personally.

Does Ankita get jealous of your female fan base?
I try my best to make her jealous, but there is some problem with her (laughs). She is so secure that sometimes I think I become uncomfortable. I am not being modest, but I don't know why and how it's (female fan following) happening. Since Ankita knows me inside out, she knows ki iske palle kuch nahi padega' (he won't understand anything).

Does she complain that you don't give her enough time?

It happens every day. But I manage to pacify her. Maybe I use my wit and charm. But deep inside, she knows that I am honest and not commitment- phobic. People tell me that I am very lucky to sign the films I've signed, but I feel that I am lucky to have Ankita in my life. Sometimes I don't even have to tell her anything; she knows it all.

(Aww ok, chalo, for this your mathematics galti maaf from my side.)

Is there any pressure from your family to get married?

I have always been very transparent about this issue. I know that after so much hard work, I have got the girl, and I won't be able to do this in my life ever again (laughs). There is no second thought about it. I have to get married to her, and it will be very soon, probably this year or early next year.

Do you see other young actors as competition?

No. It's cruel to compare two actors working with two different filmmakers on two different characters. You can match their stardom on the basis of the number of films, endorsements or fees they are charging, but you just can't compare two different actors.

Sridevi as Miss Havisham?

Upala KBR

While Abhishek Kapoor has found his Estella (Katrina Kaif) and Pip (Sushant Singh Rajput) for Fitoor (an adaptation of Charles Dickens' novel Great Expectations) the crucial casting of Ms Havisham remains open. The director wants Sridevi to play the role of the wealthy spinster in the Indian adaptation.
Says a source, "Gattu is very keen to cast Sridevi as he feels she is the best fit. She played an elderly lady in Khuda Gawah (1992) and he still remembers that. It's the role of a rich, middle-aged spinster (with an adopted daughter), who is jilted by her boyfriend in her younger days and takes it out on the young couple in love. Later, she's overcome by guilt and repents her deeds. Gattu has sounded off Sridevi about it but she's a bit apprehensive about playing an elderly character right now, especially as she is in talks for a Hollywood film. Also, the character is a grey one and Sridevi has never played something like that before. Sridevi is not sure if she can pull it off. "
upala.kbr@dnaindia.net

Who's she
She's the lady who takes the young hero on as a companion. Miss Havisham is left at the altar, at 20 minutes to nine on her wedding day and cheated of her riches. Heartbroken she stays alone in her decaying mansion, never removing her wedding dress and wearing only one shoe. Her wedding breakfast and cake remains uneaten on the table and with her front door kept permanently ajar in case her groom ever returned. All of the clocks in Miss Havisham's mansion have been stopped at 20 minutes to nine " the exact time when she received the letter.

Actor Sushant Singh Rajput, who debuted in Bollyood with Abhishek Kapoor's "Kai Po Che", won't be seen in the director's next film "Fitoor" due to date problems.

"Sushant wanted to do Shekar Kapur's 'Paani' as well as Abhishek's 'Fitoor'. Sushant requested Abhishek to postpone the date of his film 'Fitoor' and has perhaps disappointed him. So now Sushant is no more part of 'Fitoor' and Abhishek is hunting for the leading actor for his film," a source told IANS.

Katrina Kaif has been finalized as the female lead for "Fitoor", an adaptation of Charles Dickens classic "Great Expectations". The film will be produced by Ekta Kapoor.

A statement from Sushant's spokesperson confirmed the news.

"Sushant will not be doing 'Fitoor'. The film, for which he had allotted dates this year and kept himself free, has shifted from its original October 2013 schedule to March 2014 and now to July 2014. It now clashes with his dates allotted for 'Paani' due to which he had to let it go. He hopes to collaborate with Abhishek on some project in the future," said the statement.
