Shuddh Desi Interview with Sushant Singh Rajput

By Guneet Wadera - Filmicafe.com , 3 September 2013

Sushant Singh Rajput is a man of few words but his acting on screen speaks louder than any words. Debuting with the heartwarming Kai Po Che earlier this year, he is already being touted as someone to watch out for. With Maneesh Sharma's Shuddh Desi Romance opposite Parineeti Chopra up next, to be followed by Raj Kumar Hirani's Peekay with Aamir Khan and Anushka Sharma - there is some weight in the hype that surrounds him. In an exclusive interview with Filmicafe, Sushant opens up about being Raghu in Shuddh Desi Romance and what makes the film a standout romance. Read on.

Shuddh Desi Romance is a very unusual title. Why is it fit for the film?
Sushant:
We were thinking about the right title to suit the film. The film itself is so refreshing, so new that we had to come up with something equally unique and quirky. The film talks about Indian sensibilities and romance in a real space as it normally happens in our life in India, which is why we went with Shuddh Desi Romance.

Is Raghu like you and how much of him is you?
Sushant:
When we started with the film, I remember reading the script for the first time instinctively reacting to it and getting all excited about it. Personally I am not like Raghu but I have seen or come across him somewhere in my life. I understand him and what he is going through. I know his psychology and can relate to his internal conflicts. There were some similarities I connected with and many dissimilarities I had to work on. Finally when we started shooting for the film I was fully Raghu. When we were filming, the spontaneity I was coming up with was Raghu's and not mine.

As an actor you work through yourself into the character by figuring out all the similarities that you have. The similarities may be quite less so then you have to invent the character's background and do lots of research to figure out his psyche to give you the authority to pretend to be him. You have to make yourself believe that you are the character.

Raghu is sandwiched between Gayatri and Tara. What do you have to say about your leading ladies Parineeti and Vaani?
Sushant:
Oh, they are fabulous. Speaking about Gayatri - Parineeti she is fantastic, passionate and extremely spontaneous. As an actor all you have to do while you are working with this kind of a co-actor is react to her and the chemistry looks organic and real. She would never complain when I would tell her to rehearse again and again, so I feel she deserves every bit of credit (laughs).

Talking about Tara - Vaani she is very driven. For someone who doesn't have any formal training in acting she was really confident in front of the camera. She has a great screen presence, is hardworking and has all the right ingredients for making it big in the industry.

You are sharing screen space with Rishi Kapoor as well. Your interactions with him look particularly hilarious, what was it like working alongside him?
Sushant:
Rishi sir and I are from a different school of acting. He is so hugely experienced. The way he approaches his character, the way he approaches every scene - you get to learn so many things from him. Working with him was a huge learning experience for me.

Yash Raj Films has been a staple of romance over the years. What makes Shuddh Desi Romance standout?
Sushant:
Most of the romantic films which we make are deliberately designed in a way to escape from our daily boring lives. The reason for this being that the mainstream audience is somewhat less attentive towards non-fantasy orientated films. In that way, Shuddh Desi Romance is a complete departure. The romance is in a very real space as it normally happens in our lives. Jaideep and Maneesh had researched intensely for this film to come up with something which is interesting, quirky and honest.

We address the confusion related to love and infatuation and the signs of love and infatuation which are so interchangeable at first. Then we also talk about the psychology of today's generation. We are in a confounding situation right now. We don't know what to do, whether to stick to our culture or not. Inbuilt in that culture are many contradictions and hypocrisies. There are certain protocols and norms we must follow in the industry. All of us who dare not to follow those rules, we are strictly being judged in a negative manner. We are all such people who are trying to think differently anf live differently. The film tackles all these hypocrisies in our society in an entertaining manner. The funny thing is all of the characters themselves don't do things intentionally. They just follow their heart, act out of biological scripting and then don't know what do to deal with repercussions of not adhering to society's protocols. The romance of Shuddh Desi will be a refreshing change for all of us.

How would gauge the success of a film like this which aspires to bring about a refreshing change?
Sushant:
I seriously don't have the intellectual curiosity or endowment to describe why some films make a certain number at the box office and why some of the very good films find it so difficult to even find a good release. I don't know the reason. There is sometimes a misguided enthusiasm about all these big star films which are almost all okay in content but then everything else is there for them. The entertainment industry is growing at such a fast rate. The number of screens is increasing every year. We also have a newly prosperous middle class who are open to more realistic cinema and independent films with independent visions. There is a hope that even these realistic films which are high on content, are marketed well and have good actors would do 150 - 200 crores in the next 3 to 5 years.

Toronto audiences will be seeing you at Toronto Film Festival. Looking forward to it?
Sushant:
I am very, very excited. It is a matter of great pride that our film has been selected. Even my first film Kai Po Che was picked for Berlin but I didn't get a chance to go there. This time I've packed by bags and am all ready (laughs).

Is Sushant Singh Rajput too slim or is he losing weight for Bollywood career?

Sushant Singh Rajput is on a high these days. He's zoomed out of the television scenario and has successfully zoomed in Bollywood recently. Kai Po Che earned him critical appreciation and Yash Raj Film's Shuddh Desi Romance is paving way for him to become a popular actor. Not that he is not famous already -- the actor is currently filming for Aamir Khan's Peekay with Anushka Sharma, and if reports are to be believed, he's bagged a film opposite Katrina Kaif as well. That's called speed at workplace, no?

But in the process, it seems, he's ignoring his health. Or so it looks like owing to his skinny appearance while returning from Shuddh Desi Romance promotions in Ahmedabad. While many were wondering where are the leading ladies of the film -- Parineeti Chopra and Vaani Kapoor -- we were left guessing as to what's the reason behind this weight loss?

Music: Sachin-Jigar

Lyrics: Jaideep Sahni

Singers: Sunidhi Chauhan, Mohit Chauhan, Jigar, Priya, Benny Dayal, Shalmali Kholgade, Divya Kumar and Priya Panchal

With a title like this you wonder what the music will be like. But like the title the music too is shuddh, desi and has dollops of romance oozing out from the four songs and five instrumentals. Surprisingly, for a movie dealing with live-in relationships, the music is slightly hatke from all the fast paced numbers which the youth prefer these days. The only thing that gives the song a feel of the present generation is the Hinglish lyrics. The second big surprise is the absence of what is a must in every album these days " jazz, dhol or party remixes.

Salim-Suleiman who have been part of director Maneesh Sharma's earlier ventures make way for composer duo Sachin-Jigar. So have Sachin-Jigar finally arrived with their first big ticket release? A Yash Chopra banner film, no less?

The album opener, Tere mere beech main kya hai by Sunidhi Chauhan and Mohit Chauhan, is a soft love song that grows on you with repeated listening. Sunidhi brings out the bindaas attitude in Parineeti Chopra's character in her trademark style, while Mohit takes the song to another level with his velvet voice. The lyrics too standout: sample this " Chaddar khaddar ki, arman hain resham ke. Writing lyrics must have been easy for scriptwriter Jaideep Sahni, as he fleshed out the characters and knew them inside out which reflects in the songs.

The next song paints everything in pink and it would not come as a surprise if it becomes the official city anthem of Pink City Jaipur. Again a soft melodious romantic number, Jigar and Priya do complete justice to Gulabi. The arrangement gives the song a different feel.

The composers and lyricist have actually managed to pull off the unthinkable " turning the odd-sounding title into a track. Benny Dayal and Shalmali Kholgade do complete justice to what sounds like the only dance number in the album. Credit goes to Jaideep for coming up with a song that has loads of local flavor.

Divya Kumar's quirky number Chanchal mann ati random again has excellent lyrics by Jaideep. Though at times the song does remind you about the Dreamum wakepum from Aiyyaa, the catchy arrangement takes it to another level.

Since the movie is based in Jaipur, there is ample use of the local instruments and singing style. The localised nature of the soundtrack may either work in its favour or will have a short shelf life.

The instrumental part begins with the Mujhe kiss kar sakte ho song. As the title suggests, the piece in all likelihood will be played whenever there is a kissing scene on screen (we have seen quite a few in the promos that have been on air).

Of the remaining four " In Jaipur, Tezz wala attraction, Boyfriend banogey, Bhanwara ma bhatke " they are situational and fail to add any value to the soundtrack.

The album had all the potential to go above the ordinary. But it just manages to keep you hooked with the interesting arrangement. Yash Raj Films projects are known for their music, which is remembered for years. Sadly, Shuddh Desi Romance disappoints on this front. Will it top the charts after the movie releases on September 6 remains to be seen.

Box Office Prediction For SHUDDH DESI ROMANCE

"Shuddh Desi Romance" is releasing tomorrow and this film is directed by Maneesh Sharma who directed sleeper hit "Band Baaja Baraat". Though last Maneesh Sharma film "Ladies Vs Ricky Bahl" remained average. Both these films were penned by Habib Faisal.

This time around Maneesh is teamed up with Jaideep Sahni who wrote "Chak De! India" and "Rocket Singh Salesman Of The Year". This deadly combo makes this venture exciting and that is clearly visible through promos. Film has good music and almost everything to attract urban youth audience to cinemas.

Film will start well at box office and with good reviews coupled with positive word of mouth, it can do wonders at box office. Also massy film "Zanjeer" will not eat into its target audience.

Box Office Prediction:

Shuddh Desi Romance: Movie Review

Posted On: 05 Sep 2013

Jaideep Sahni who has earlier written scripts for "Company", "Khosla Ka Ghosla", "Bunty aur Bubly" has written a thought provoking script which director Manish Sharma has used very efficiently and intelligently. "Shuddh Desi Romance" is not the usual love triangle masala movie.

The movie which is set in royal city Jaipur, beautifully explores theme of modern day romance and concept of live-in relationship. Thorough work is put in characterization and the characters are very interesting. The serious and socially sensitive concept of live-in relationship is depicted with healthy dose of humour.

Raghu (Sushant Singh Rajput) is a tourist guide in Jaipur who has everything in life, well everything except love. He meets Gayatri (Parineeti Chopra) whose relationship list is even longer than Indian government's scam list. She is soon followed by Tara (Vaani kapoor) who is very practical and has everything well planned in her life. And how they sort out their love triangle is movie "Shuddh Desi Romance".

The star cast has brilliantly enacted a well developed story on silver screen. Sushant Singh Rajput who showed acting masterclass in "Kai Po Che" has returned with another powerful performance. He has depicted confusion and patience of Raghu with perfection.
Parineeti Chopra looks every bit of a bold girl who has journeyed through number of relationships with feeling of love still in tow. While Vaani Kapoor as charming Tara has given good account of her acting skills in what looks like a successful debut.

And the senior most and evergreen star Rishi Kapoor who recently turned 61 has given another ageless and marvelous performance as a wedding planner. Sachin-Jigar has given great music which has the local rajasthani touch to it. According to me, "Gulabi" sound track is the best of the lot, while other songs are also good.

Overall, the movie is very good, a light hearted entertainer. And with the other weekend release "Zanjeer 2" looking average, "Shuddh Desi Romance" might gain upper hand at box office collections.

Shuddh Desi Romance Picks Up On Day 2 (1st Saturday) | Box Office Collections

After collecting 6.45 crores on Day 1, Shuddh Desi Romance showed an escalation signs on Day 2 i.e. 1st Saturday at the Domestic Box Office. Though the screen count for this YRF venture was just 1050, the number of footfalls went up to a good extent, especially in Mumbai, Delhi-Up and East Punjab circuits.

Shuddh Desi Romance saw around 80-85% occupancy in the evening and night shows yesterday and as per early estimates, the movie made an approximate business of about 8 crores at the Box Office. The movie now stands at a domestic total of about 14.45 crores at the Box Office.

Sushant Singh Rajput And Parineeti Chopra in Shuddh Desi Romance Movie Stills

The movie performed excellently in Mumbai, what with collecting around 2.25 crores on day 1, followed by Delhi-UP circuit raking in approx 1.25 crores!

If the film maintains its current pace, it will surely end up its opening weekend collections at 20 croresat the Domestic Box Office

Shuddh Desi Romance

We live in troubled times. Where relationships are messy, marriages fall apart, people fall in and out of love and arranged marriages are almost a joke. Only that not many Hindi films would dare to say it out aloud. Because it does not make good business sense to make fun of what's at the core of the great Indian family " the arranged marriage. Nor does it make commercial sense to show the youth the mirror " of how messed up and fickle they have become... who wants to be shown like a confused dolt on the big screen, right?

But this is modern India in all its hypocritical glory and full points to writer Jaideep Sahni, director Manish Sharma and producer Aditya Chopra for not holding back the punches and going all out to show us how the young are more confused than ever when it comes to relationships they forge and the arranged marriages they are forced with. Jaideep wrote about doing the right thing in Rocket Singh: Salesman of the Year, straight from the heart, Maneesh Sharma explored the behind-the-scenes of wedding planning in Band Baaja Baaraat and Aditya Chopra had explored this arranged marriage dynamic in Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi. Between the three of them, they have all the understanding of how business and marriages work in India.

Significantly, Sahni's story is not set in cosmopolitan Mumbai or Delhi. It's set in Jaipur, which is a fair city that represents tradition, modernity and business that drives India. Marriage Contractor Goyal (Rishi Kapoor) is the personification of the well-wishing sentiment and the good old-fashioned pressure of "When are you getting married?" The hypocritical, confused hero Raghuram Sitaram (Sushant Singh Rajput) represents the Indian groom filled with doubt and terrified of regret, Gayatri (Parineeti Chopra) is the modern independent impulsive Indian girl and Tara (Vaani Kapoor) plays the family-centric girl with aspirations of being truly independent.

So if you find the proceedings funny and farcical, it is only because that's the idea behind the cheekily titled Shuddh Desi Romance that packs in enough kisses, premarital sex and meaningless wedding rituals to show us the latent hypocrisy of the gossip-mongering society.

Yet, it is not completely cynical either. It has a solid heart, powered by a terrific Parineeti Chopra as the girl showing considerable spirit and spunk despite having her heart broken "three or four" times. Sushant plays a rather unlikeable protagonist a little too convincingly that you wonder why would an independent girl like Gayatri fall for a guy like him. Debutante Vaani underplays the role devoid of dramatics that she almost sounds flat. And Rishi Kapoor once again makes the most of the limited role.

If this film makes you uncomfortable or uneasy, it is because this is not the escapist feel good cinema Yash Raj Films is associated with. This is a reality check on the state of affairs, narrated crisply (Editing: Namrata Rao) like a joke, tongue firmly in cheek.

One of the bravest, boldest films Yash Raj Films has ever made.

Genre: Romance

Director: Maneesh Sharma

Cast: Parineeti Chopra, Sushant Singh Rajput, Vaani Kapoor, Rishi Kapoor

Storyline: A boy, on his way to his wedding, falls in love with his co-passenger.

Bottomline: A farcical romantic comedy about modern romance and the growing irrelevance of arranged marriages
