Sushant Singh Rajput injured

Mehul S Thakkar (MUMBAI MIRROR; February 11, 2013)

Sushant Singh Rajput, who has been busy promoting his upcoming film Kai Po Che, suffered major injuries while rehearsing for a dance reality show and had to be rushed to the hospital on Sunday.

An eyewitness told Mumbai Mirror: "Sushant was rehearsing for a reality show with a troop of dancers at a city studio. He was trying out a tough step when he lost balance and hurt himself. He was in a lot of pain and was immediately rushed to the hospital. The doctors who attended him took out an X-ray and it seems he has got a ligament tear. The doctors have advised the actor to take rest for at least two days."

With his first film due to release in a few weeks, Sushant is hoping to resume his normal life soon.

Sushant Singh Rajput and Amrita Puri play siblings in Abhishek Kapoor's upcoming film. Looks like their character bonding managed to find it's way into their personal equation as well. Sushant helped Amrita out in her time of need.

Says a source, "Amrita needed to ride a scooty as part of her character brief. She was unaware how to ride it and wondered if she needed to learn how to drive it for the scenes."

Adds the source, "After spending a lot of time together, Amrita and Sushant bonded well. When Amrita told him about his scooty woes, Sushant immediately agreed to teach her the hows and whys of riding it."

Before starting their shoot, both the actors would meet every afternoon for scooty training. It was during these practice sessions that Amrita got a taste of Sushant's popularity as a telly actor.

The source further adds, "Sushant would have a lot of passers by look at him. It was quite an experience for Amrita and she enjoyed watching her on screen brother get all the female attention as well on the streets."

The three young actors reveal in a candid conversation what the secret of their shared chemistry is and why they decided to bare their torsos
When we arrived at Mohan Studios to interview the stars of Abhishek Kapoor's Kai Po Che! – Sushant Singh Rajput, Amit Sadh and Raj Kumar Yadav – we heard music blaring from their vanity van, punctuated with cries of 'Kai po che!'. And the moment we walked in, we saw the boys having a good time and realised that their onscreen bonding and chemistry carried on into real life. So when we sat down to chat, there was not a dull moment…..

You seem to have become great friends…the bonding is visible. Were you guys having as much fun while shooting too?
Sushant Singh Rajput: Yes, the chemistry and the camaraderie was there even during the making of the movie.

When did you guys first meet?
Raj Kumar Yadav: It was 3.30 pm (grins).
Sushant: On a Saturday.

Was this after you had already signed the film?
Amit Sadh: We actually met for the first time when we were giving our screen tests. Casting director Mukesh Chabbra called us in for the audition and asked us to give a screen test together as our characters. So this bonding that you see has been there since the first day.

I hear you did several rehearsals…
Sushant: Yes, we did workshops. But the required chemistry was there. The film is about the chemistry between these three guys, so there was no competition. We were acting for each other. I stole Amit's line, by the way!

Sushant and Amit, you two are making your debut and looks like you are paired with Raj Kumar Yadav. No heroines for you?
Amit: Raj has the girl. Sushant and I are paired opposite each other! (laughs)

This is not a conventional debut. You don't really get to show off your dance moves or romance the heroine….
Amit: We did get to show off our bodies.

Raj didn't take off his shirt though…
Raj: Yeah…my character is like that.
Amit: He doesn't have to do it – he already has the girl!
Raj: Yes, only she has the right to see my body…
Sushant: Who 'she'? (looking stern) Oh…you are talking about my sister in the film! (Raj is dating Sushant's onscreen sister in the film)
Raj: Oops…I am sorry.

You have wanted to be in the movies for a long time now, right, Sushant?
Sushant: Not really.
Raj: Can I answer that for him?

Sure…
Raj: I was planning to go to UCLA to study filmmaking. I was even ready to open a canteen in Film City. At that time I got a few film offers, but I didn't like anything. When I read the script of Kai Po Che! though, I got goosebumps. (Amit and Sushant giggle as Raj speaks)

What would your answer to this question be, Sushant? Is Kai Po Che an ideal launch for you?
Sushant: It is. To be a part of such a good script and to work with UTV and a director like Abhishek Kapoor is great.

What were your thoughts, Amit, when the film came to you, about your character?
Amit: Initially, when we came on board, we didn't know much about the characters. We did workshops. Kai po che means jab patang kat jaati hai (the string of the kite gets cut) and it's a victory call. It's metaphoric.

Have you read the book?
Raj: Yes.
Amit: Which book? (looking confused)

Three Mistakes Of My Life by Chetan Bhagat…the book on which this movie is based.
Raj: I have read it.
Amit: He reads all his (Chetan Bhagat's) books.
Raj: Yeah…Chetan and I wrote the book together. From the very beginning he wanted me to play Govind.

How close is the movie to the book?
Raj: The incidents and characters are the same…
(Sushant whispers to Raj)
Raj: Kya? Nahin bolna hai?
Amit: It's adopted…oops…adapted (laughs). No, but actually it's an adopted child.
Raj: There are many things that have been retained but, yes, we have changed quite a bit of it, because writing a book and making a film are two different things. So for that reason we had to make some changes.

After doing Love Sex Aur Dhoka and Ragini MMS…
Raj: No, I didn't make any MMS after doing these films.

Did you feel you would get typecast because both these characters were in the same zone?
No, after LSD I did Chittagong and then shot for Ragini MMS and then Gangs Of Wasseypur. So I didn't feel like I was getting typecast.

Sushant, you have already signed two more films – does that take the pressure off your debut film?
Raj: Do you feel secure now?
Sushant: I was never insecure, seriously! As he (Amit) rightly said…which was my line actually!
Amit: All the lines are yours!
Sushant: What I wanted to say was that even if I don't have any films next year after these three, I would be excited. I can do something of my own, probably make short films. And these two can also be a part of it.
Raj: Write a good script then.

Very few actors have managed to make a successful transition from TV to movies. After making this big move, do you see yourself going back to TV and doing more shows or soaps?
Sushant: As an actor, if you are capable enough to play a character in a convincing manner, then you can do it in theatre, in front of the TV camera and in front of a film camera. From an actor's perspective, there is no difference. If you are capable enough people will accept you, because you can convince them in any medium. I think TV actors are as capable as any other actor, and sometimes better than some actors.

What about you Amit – do you see yourself doing more TV?
Amit: Like Sushant says, acting is acting. Whichever the platform, you just have to go and give your best. And wherever the good stories are and wherever you get to play challenging characters, you can be available there.

Do you feel stuck when doing a TV show because it can go on for five to six years? A movie, on the other hand, gets done more quickly and you move on. As an actor and as a person, which process do you enjoy more?
Sushant: If your priority is fame and money and if you are a big hit in a popular TV show, great! It's very hard to say no to that kind of money and fame. When you are at the peak, it's a big risk to quit that show and try films. But if you like your work and want to try different things, you decide to take the plunge. Movies are superb because you can finish shooting in three to four months and can move on to another character and work on something new. It's very risky, but very good for an actor.
Amit: TV gets monotonous. There is no catharsis. You just play one state of mind. In films you get to see the entire journey of a character.

What was Abhishek Kapoor like as a director?
Raj: For an actor, he is a dream director. The kind of faith and trust he has given us is amazing. He is so passionate and so focused. And he's as childlike as us. He focused only on making a good film and so we also focused on that.

Was shooting in Ahmedabad fun? What did you do when you were not shooting?
Sushant: We were shooting every day, actually. We were screwed there!
Amit: It was really hot…about 48 degrees.
Sushant: That's why we took our shirts off, actually. We weren't trying to show off our six-pack abs!
Amit: People are very warm there.
Raj: Really, really warm!
Amit: They would feed us golas and food. Wonderful people!
Raj: We had a wonderful time in Ahmedabad.
Amit: We loved the food there. Raj finished all the paneer. Did you read Ahmedabad Times?

No I didn't…
Amit: For a week there was no paneer in Ahmedabad. He (Raj) ate it all!

Sushant, recently Anushka Sharma – who is your co-star in P.K. – said in an interview that you had only eight days of work in the movie and you are just a small chapter in her life. How do you react to that?
Raj: Dhyaan se, dost…(cautiously my friend)
Amit: Yeh wo wala sawaal hai (It's that kind of question).
Sushant: I will have to check the schedule to know exactly how many days I am shooting. As far as being a small chapter is concerned, I hope it's an interesting one in her (Anushka) life. I come from the school of actors who believe there are no small roles, there are only small actors. In my first film (Kai Po Che) I am working with two other actors, in Maneesh Sharma's movie I am opposite two heroines and in my third, I am working with two lead actors. So I can stand in a crowd in the frame of a director like Raj Kumar Hirani and still be a proud actor.

'Kai Po Che!' will make Ankita cry!

Sushant Singh Rajput's debut Bollywood movie "Kai Po Che!" releases Feb 22 and the actor's girlfriend Ankita Lokhande says she will be all teary-eyed while watching the film.

Sushant Singh Rajput's debut Bollywood movie "Kai Po Che!" releases Feb 22 and the actor's girlfriend Ankita Lokhande says she will be all teary-eyed while watching the film.

"Obviously, it is very good and we are very excited. The premiere is on Feb 18. But I know I am going to cry while watching his film," the 28-year-old said here on the sets of her TV show "Pavitra Rishta".

Asked if she gets jealous when Sushant works with other actresses, Ankita said: "I do not feel jealous at all. These things cannot break our 'pavitra rishta'."

Sushant added: "She supports me completely."

Ankita and Sushant's love blossomed on the sets of popular TV show "Pavitra Rishta" and visiting the sets of his debut show recently he said he is also looking forward to his girlfriend's reaction to his first film, which is based on Chetan Bhagat's book "The 3 Mistakes Of My Life". It tells the story of three friends, their lives and their mistakes.

"I am excited about how will Ankita feel when she first watches the film. I hope she likes it," he said.

Sushant is among a horde of TV actors who quit the small screen to make it big on the big screen. Very few could make it big, but things are looking positive for Sushant as Abhishek Kapoor-directed "Kai Po Che!" would have its premiere at the Berlin film festival Feb 18.

"I don't believe in luck, I believe that if you are capable and you take the jump at the right time, then a little patience will get you good work," said the 27-year-old, an all-India topper in the engineering entrance exam who dropped out to chase his acting dreams and shifted his base from Delhi to Mumbai.

Sushant has already signed a film with Yash Raj opposite Parineeti Chopra. He will also be seen in "22 Tango" and Aamir Khan's "Peekay".

Berlin International Film Festival | 'Kai Po Che!' flies high
Abhishek Kapoor's second movie will premiere at the festival before its India release
Meenakshi Shedde
MON, FEB 11 2013. 07 17 PM IST

Selected in the Panorama section, Kai Po Che's world premiere is on 13 February, at the spectacular Friedrichstadt Palast in former East Berlin.
Updated: Mon, Feb 11 2013. 07 19 PM IST
Berlin:"I'm thrilled to have Kai Po Che! selected by the Berlin Film Festival," said director Abhishek Kapoor. "It's my first film there. It deals with an Indian subject and Indian issues, but at the back of my mind, I was hoping it would also have a world audience. So this is a huge victory for me."
A section of the Berlin International Film Festival's audience is addicted to Bollywood and, more specifically, Shah Rukh Khan. So Kai Po Che! is a different kind of triumph, a Bollywood film at the sixty-third Berlin festival, even if it doesn't have the star or masala item numbers. The title refers to the Gujarati victory cry during kite-flying, when one kite string cuts another. It is about three friends in Gujarat who start a cricket academy venture; the film both celebrates and tests their friendship, against the backdrop of the Gujarat riots. Selected in the Panorama section, the film's world premiere is on 13 February, at the spectacular Friedrichstadt Palast in former East Berlin, with 1,895 seats, bigger than most Indian theatres. The production team in Berlin includes Kapoor and Disney producers Ronnie Screwvala and Siddharth Roy Kapur. "We are incredibly proud that Kai Po Che! has been selected for a world premiere at Berlin," said Roy Kapur, managing director, Studios, Disney UTV. "For a film dependent entirely on its strong storyline, rather than its line-up of stars, this is a huge achievement." Kai Po Che! will be released in India on 22 February.

Director Abhishek Kapoor.
Kapoor, who previously directed Rock On!!, has adapted the film from Chetan Bhagat's bestseller The 3 Mistakes of My Life. It features Raj Kumar Yadav, Sushant Singh Rajput, Amit Sadh and Amrita Puri, with music by Amit Trivedi. "The film has a much wider appeal than Rock On!!," Kapoor said. "It deals with friendship, business, the earthquake and riots, so it appeals to the middle class and diaspora, whereas Rock On!! was about rock music and aimed at an upper class audience. I wanted to get out of my comfort zone."
It is the first time Kapoor is adapting a book for a film he has directed. Along with Kapoor, screenwriting credits include author Chetan Bhagat, Pubali Chaudhuri and Supratik Sen. "I'd never adapted a book before and it wasn't easy," Kapoor said. "The book has a lot of material, and it was a challenge deciding what to keep and what to leave out. We wanted to fit in new ideas, but filmmaking has certain rules too. But the final script stands alone independently of the book, and adds value to it."
Kapoor seems to have matured as a filmmaker, moving from a rock music theme to friendships set during the 2002 riots. "Having failed before (referring to his acting career and debut film Aryan), I'm not afraid of failing. For Kai Po Che!,I didn't go by the Bollywood rules, stars or item numbers. I've made the film as pure as possible," he said.
The director certainly shows his pedigree by taking risks'both in casting actors rather than stars, and exploring the communal riots in Gujarat, that a lot of the media seem to have papered over in the discussions for Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi as India's next prime minister. But Kapoor prefers to keep it low key. "I am not politically inclined, I don't understand politics," he said. "I don't have a stand. I only understand the pain of my characters."
What was it like shooting filming aspects of the riots in Gujarat? "When shooting in North India, crowds can get rowdy," Kapoor said. "But when shooting in Gujarat, the people seemed so gentle, docile and kind, it was hard to imagine there was so much anger, as was evident during the riots."
Dil Chahta Hai and Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara were two recent Bollywood films also on the theme of male bonding, but Kapoor sees his film as occupying a different niche. "Kai Po Che! is dealing with more middle class issues and is not escapist," he said. "The common youth can relate to its realistic aspirations and emotions. It is not only urban-centric, but pan-Indian."

'Kai Po Che!' celebrates and tests the friendship of three people against the backdrop of the Gujarat riots.
Is he especially concerned about Kai Po Che!, given how Kamal Haasan's Viswaroopam was banned in Tamil Nadu for two weeks, even after the censors cleared it? "When a filmmaker's film is up for release, it is no different from molesting a woman who cannot defend herself," he said. "It is the system that acts like the Taliban. It is screwing him. What can Kamal Haasan do? Shame on us! But one can't live in fear and assume things. What can I do? My film does not touch upon sensitive matters; it is about characters and events that affect them. It is purely about friendship, so I have nothing to worry about."
There is a lot of media support for Narendra Modi's campaign for investment in Gujarat, and Bollywood star Amitabh Bachchan is brand ambassador for Gujarat Tourism. As his film is about friendships and enterprise set in Gujarat, could it be seen as an endorsement of Modi's campaign? "That is not the intention of the film," Kapoor said. "It is a simple story set in 2000-2002, there's no propaganda, no undertones or subliminal messages. It is a film with a heart."
Raj Kumar Yadav, the superb actor from Love, Sex aur Dhokha, Gangs of Wasseypur and Shahid, plays Govind in the film. "It is a big thing for me to have the film at Berlin," Yadavsays. "Shahid had also travelled to Toronto, Dubai and the Mumbai film festivals, and got a very good response. The biggest challenge in Kai Po Che! was speaking Hindi with a Gujarati accent. I worked out the back story of my character from the time he was born till the present, to understand him better. I'm not worried for the film at all, since it is based on a book that has sold millions and everybody knows the story already."

Sushant Singh Rajput

Ouch! Kai Po Che star Sushant Singh's girlfriend Ankita Lokhande, close friends and family are inundated with anxious calls from all across the country, all because of a report on Monday morning stating Sushant had suffered "major injuries" while dancing for a reality show on Sunday afternoon.

Concerned folks can take it easy. A torn ligament is painful, but not what one would call a major accident.

Says Sushant, "I am fine. I tore a ligament while dancing on a reality show.

Hota hai (it happens). It's painful. But I've seen worse. Unfortunately the timing for this little mishap is all wrong since I have to be on my feet for city tours to promoteKai Po Che."

Since Sushant has been asked to take complete bed rest he would have to postpone the immediate promotional engagement in Kolkata.

"I don't know if I can do it. Because the minute I stand on my feet there's pain. As soon as I can walk without support I will be out on my feet. This is a very important moment in my life. The last thing I want is to be confined to bed when my movie career is about to begin," says Sushant angrily.

In the meanwhile faithful girlfriend Ankita has been fielding calls from well wishers about Sushant's injury.

Says the indulgent doting boyfriend, "Ankita is more excited about my movie debut than I am. And that's saying a lot."

Sushant who is currently shooting for Yashraj Films' new project with Parineeti Chopra, shot in the crowded areas of Johri Bazar in Jaipur where star-struck onlookers got into an agitated mode on seeing stars descend in their midst.

Apparently Sushant who had to perform long dramatic dialogues in the Bazar jumped in to form a protective cordon around the two female actors Parneeti and new-find model Vani Kapoor.

Says Sushant, "I am not supposed to talk about the Yashraj film at all. Maneesh Sharma is a delight to work with. When I had seen his Band Bajaa Baraat I had hoped someday I'd get to work with him. I didn't think it'd happen so soon."

Sushant jumps to Maneesh's defense, demolishing stories of the director's ill-tempered behaviour and unpunctuality. "Poor Maneesh. I guess he was the target for that particular week. He is a most unassuming disciplined and dedicated guy who spends no time on anything except his work."
