Guess Who's Back

Chapter 90: Locked Out

Husband and wife both turned to each other with pouty and anxious faces realizing they were trapped outside. The spare was nowhere to be found. Someone had moved it. "This is just great," Heer sighed as she clasped her bathrobe tightly to her body. "The whole house is going to be up soon and they will be looking for us. What are we going to tell them?"

"I don't know," Prem replied rubbing the back of his neck. "I mean we're all adults here right?" looking at his wife, "We're married. They know that. So what if we spent some time together in the pool house? So what if we show up at the front door steps in our pajamas. What are we afraid of? How do they expect us to have children later if we don't...I mean they know how children are made...Ma and Bauji had Harman, Preet, and Veera. We shouldn't be afraid of anything."

Heer stared at him as he continued to babble about this and that. "Prem," she cut in. "I'm in my bathrobe. You want me to walk into the house in front of Ma and Bauji...Rishi and Tanu...and all of your siblings in my bathrobe and act like this is normal? I only have my underwear on."

"They don't know what you have underneath the bathrobe. They don't need to know that," he replied. "Honey, it's okay. I know modesty in front of the parents but we don't have any other choice."

"Prem, please," Heer pleaded. "I won't be able to look Ma and Bauji in the eyes. If I was wearing my pajamas this would be a different story but I'm not."

"Honey, they know you're not that type of girl. You're thinking too much about it," Prem reasoned. He sighed and reached his hand out to ring the door bell.

"Preet!" Heer warned.

Prem quickly pulled back his hand and looked at her. "Preet, will bug you every day. You know how he can get. Do you really want that to happen?"

"What choice do I have?" he asked gloomily.

"Meher," Heer answered with a ray of hope. "We can get Meher and Ashlesha to open the door for us."

"But how? They are up on the third floor. We don't have a cell phone," Prem replied.

"Oh," Heer sadly agreed. She then bit her lower lip thinking of some other plan of action for them to take. Prem turned back around and began reaching for the door bell again. He heaved backwards as he felt his shirt tightly being pulled from behind making him choke. "So sorry Jaanu," Heer apologized rubbing his back. "But I just thought of something...pretend you got locked out while getting the morning paper."

Prem finished coughing and then looked at his wife with a bright smile thankful for her idea. "Brilliant! Okay, so I'll do that and then I let you in when no one is looking?"

"Right," Heer nodded.

"Okay. You better hide," looking around the property trying to find a suitable place for her to hide, "go behind one of the cars. With the way the bushes are growing you can't hide in them," Prem said. He waited until she was properly out of view before he turned around and rang the front door bell. He tried to compose himself and rehearsed in his head what he was going to explain to whomever it was that would be answering the door.

"Prem?" Kulraj inquired as she stared confusingly at her brother wondering why he was outside so early in the morning.

"I got locked out. I was getting the morning paper," he explained with a cheesy smile. "Thanks for letting me in Di."

"Prem..."

"Yes, Didi," he replied with a smile.

"Aren't you forgetting something?" Kulraj asked looking at him. He stared at his sister strangely until she said, "The paper. Don't you need to bring it in?"

"Oh, yes the paper of course. I was outside cause I wanted to get the paper. I must still be half asleep. Thanks Di for reminding me," Prem laughed nervously.

Kulraj just looked at him shaking her head sadly like he had lost his mind. "Come in...come in, I've got work to do," she said motioning with her hands for him to hurry up and come back inside the house. Prem smiled and was waiting for her to leave so he could sneak his wife into the house. He sighed in relief when his sister started walking away but she then paused and turned around as if she realized something. "Oh Prem, I forgot. There is this bag of wheat flour I need your help with and I can't reach one of the boxes on the shelf...I need to borrow your height." He looked at her slightly stunned and glanced back to the door wondering what he was suppose to do. "Come on, be a good little brother and help your older sister out. Heer should be coming down soon so don't worry you're get to see your wife."

"Di, um...Bauji wants his paper..."

"Prem, stop being stubborn and come to the kitchen. It will only take two seconds," his older sister replied as she locked the front door and then hooked her arm around his dragging him towards the kitchen.

Meanwhile, out on the main driveway Heer was hiding behind the minivan wondering what was taking Prem so long to come and bring her back into the house. She sighed as she was starting to get restless. She peeked her head around the curve of the hood and looked at the grand wooden doors of the Juneja mansion. She decided to take a chance and stealthily made her way to the front door. She pushed her thumb down on the lever and leaned inward hoping the door would move forward. To her utter dismay it didn't budge. She was locked out of the house.

****************************************************************

Prem moped as his sister ordered him around the kitchen. He was taking things from off the high shelves so she could re-organize. He didn't understand why she decided to do this massive clean up so early in the morning. Sighing he turned his head and glanced toward the window. What he saw made his eyes flex in concern. His wife was sneaking around the patio trying to see if she could get back into the house. She caught sight of him and angrily inquired through hand signals what had happened. Prem pointed to his sister and shrugged his shoulders in defeat letting her know his sister had interfered and he didn't know how to get away from her. Even though his sister was busy telling him what she wanted to do his ears perked to the sound of footsteps heading towards them. Prem motioned to Heer that someone was coming and she needed to hide.

"Haa Didi," Prem automatically stated as he turned around so he was blocking his sister's view of the window.

"Prem, did you hear anything I just said?" Kulraj asked with annoyance.

"Yes."

Holding out her hand, "Then where is it?" Prem's eyes went wide and he gave a nervous grin. "The box," Kulraj ordered.

"Oh, the box, right," Prem quickly repeated like he understood what she wanted. He looked down and realized there were all sorts of boxes on the counter. "The box..."

"The one with all the party straws," Kulraj said as she rolled her eyes and took the box from the counter. "You weren't listening."

"Didi..."

"Prem..." He turned around to see his mother entering the kitchen. "What are you doing up so early?"

"I was just getting the morning paper," he answered with a smile.

Gayatri gave him a cautious look and then beamed a wide grin, "You don't get up this early unless you have some work to do," patting his cheek, "Doing something for your wife?"

"Ma..."

"Blushing? I knew it. You are quiet the romantic like your father."

"So, that's it. You want to cook breakfast for your wife?" Kulraj inquired with an accusatory tone. "That explains a lot. No wonder you were so distracted when I was asking you to move things," pinching his cheek, "My dear Bhai you're too much. No wonder Heer adores you so."

"Didi..." Prem replied rather shyly. He glanced towards the window and saw that Heer was no longer there. He wondered how he was going to get himself out of this situation so he could get her back into the house. "Let me put this Paper in the Study Room for Bauji."

"Why are you shouting?" Kulraj inquired.

Prem ignored her question and quickly walked away heading towards the patio doors in the living room. He slid the glass doors open and began to softly call his wife. He looked in relief when she appeared.

"What took you so long?" Heer huffed.

"I'm sorry Honey but Kulraj had me help her re-arrange some things in the kitchen. I was just able to get away," Prem apologized. Heer sighed and started to cross the threshold of the doorway when they heard the sound of someone coming down the stairs. Heer was forced to go back outside to hide while Prem slid the glass door shut.

"Morning Bhaiya," Harman greeted.

"Morning Harman," Prem said with an annoyed smile. His eyes flexed in thought and he began to grin. "Ma needs your help in the kitchen."

"Okay Bhaiya," he replied obediently and left the room.

Prem waited until he was out of the room before he slid the door back open again. "Honey, come in." Heer took his hand and rushed into the house. They made their way to the stairs when they heard a gruff voice calling.

"Prem..."

"Haa Bauji," he greeted with a nervous voice. Heer immediately hide behind her husband as her cheeks flushed red.

"Oh, what's this? Good morning Heer. Why are you still wearing your bathrobe?" Lalit then glanced towards the patio doors and then back at his son and daughter-in-law. Prem's eyes widened in alarm and he swallowed hard wondering what his father was thinking. "Can you check the pool house?"

"The pool house?" Prem sputtered.

"Yes, the pool house. I thought I heard noises there last night. I know no one is using it but I thought I heard something."

"Jee Bauji," Prem replied nodding his head.

"Heer Beta, why are you still in your pajamas? Don't you have class this morning? Better go up and change."

"Jee Bauji," Heer nodded.

"Prem," noticing how his son was turning around to follow his wife up the stairs, "the pool house," Lalit commanded.

"What's wrong with the pool house Bauji?" Prem and Heer looked up to see Preet standing at the top of the stairs.

"I thought I heard some noises coming from there last night," Bauji said.

"Oh," Preet said in a pondering manner. He rubbed his chin as his brown eyes flexed in thought. "You know I thought I saw a light out there last night. I came down stairs to get some water and as I was coming back to the kitchen I thought I saw something there. But at the time I thought it was just the moonlight or something. The patio door was unlocked again. So I locked it and went back to bed," looking at his brother, "You don't know anything about that do you PB?"

"Why Would I Know Anything About That?" Prem replied. Heer gave him stern look while Preet backed away in surprise.

"I was just asking," Preet answered.

"Prem, go to the pool house," Lalit ordered as he took the newspaper from his hands.

"PB, why don't I go with you?" Preet offered.

"No, it's okay. I can do this myself," Prem hurriedly replied. "It won't take long."

"I'll just go with you," Preet insisted.

"Preet, I'm okay."

"Why are you two arguing about this?" Lalit inquired. He looked at his youngest son and nodded his head, "Preet go with your brother and check out the pool house."

Prem couldn't say anything and glanced at Heer who was looking nervous. "Come on PB," Preet smiled and put his arm around his shoulder as he walked with him down the stairs.

Heer clutched her bathrobe tightly together and hurriedly ascended the stairs. Her mind was racing at how Preet was going to react once he reached the pool house. She knew there would be months and months of ragging from Preet. She tried comforting herself with the fact that he would be the only one who would know about her and Prem's transgression and not the entire family.

****************************************************************

Preet smirked as he walked behind Prem following him back into the house. "Next time just stay in your room for that kind of stuff." Prem turned around threatening to punch him while he just smiled innocently. "I never thought you could be someone like that," patting his shoulder, "You're always so well mannered. But even the "good" child has his wild side."

"Preeettt..." Prem uttered through clenched teeth.

"I don't know about you but I'm hungry. I wonder what's for breakfast," he simply replied and walked away to the kitchen.

Prem trudge behind him and entered the kitchen. He saw the family was settling down for breakfast. "Prem Beta sit down and have breakfast," Gayatri commanded.

"Jee Ma." He took the seat next to his wife and started serving himself some parathas. He glanced over to his right and saw that Heer was busy eating her food not making any eye contact with anyone. He tore off a piece of paratha and stuck it into his mouth.

Harman was drinking orange juice from his glass and when he suddenly remembered something. He placed the glass down and reached into his pocket. "Oh Bhabhi I found this outside by the main entrance when I went to get a book from my car." Heer's eyes widen at seeing one of her payals in his hand.

"How did that happen?" Preet inquired trying to sound as innocent as he could. Prem shot a glare at his younger brother who simply went back to eating his apple.

"Maybe Prem dropped it when he was outside getting the morning paper," Kulraj suggested.

"Why would Prem Bhaiya have it with him?" Harman asked with confusion on his face.

"You know how sentimental Prem can get," Kulraj teased. "He probably wanted to keep something of her's with him." Preet started laughing and then abruptly stop as he grunted and lurched forward onto the table spilling his glass of orange juice everywhere.

"Preet!" Veera huffed as she pulled back from her chair so her dress wouldn't get orange juice on it. "Watch what you are doing!" Ashlesha and Meher immediately handed over some paper towels to help clean up the mess.

Prem silently smirked as Preet made a face and rubbed his shin tenderly. "It wasn't my fault. Prem Bhaiya kicked me."

"Yes, it was," Veera said. "And why would Prem Bhaiya kick you?"

"I don't know you ask him why," Preet replied pointing at his brother.

"Here you go Bhabhi," Harman said handing over her payal. "It was by the front steps."

"Huh," pondering thoughtfully, "Prem was getting the morning paper. He got locked outside. But now that I think about it...the dead bolt was locked too..." Kulraj said and looked at her brother. "What were you doing outside?"

Prem started choking on his paratha causing Heer to worry and she quickly offered him a glass of water. He shook his head and managed to control his cough. "I was getting the paper for Bauji. I walked through the pool area. I wanted to take a longer walk outside." Heer's eyes darted back and forth trying to read her sister-in-law's face wondering if she was buying his story.

"I never asked you for the paper," Bauji uttered.

"Bauji, I can't get the morning paper for you?" Prem hurriedly inquired trying to erase any doubt creeping into his family's minds.

"You know the pool house Bauji---"

"Preet!" Prem shouted as he stood up from the kitchen table in a commanding manner.

Heer looked at her husband in alarm and felt her cheeks flush with warmth. He had done it now. Everyone was staring at him wondering what was going on. There was more to this story about the morning paper and the payal. The youngest Juneja brother just smirked proudly at his victory. His elder brother just outed himself to the family.

"Why are you so upset?" Gayatri inquired.

"Yes, did you find anything unusual at the pool house?" Bauji asked with concern.

"Someone was there?" Meher gasped.

"Someone was there," Preet muttered under his breath, "all night long..."

"What did you just say?" Veera asked with a perplexed look. "Who was there at night?"

"Nothing Ma," Prem replied with a nervous laugh. Heer pulled him back down into his seat and then went back to looking at her breakfast plate. She fidgeted with her utensils not really sure what to do next.

"Heer, why are you so quiet?" Kulraj asked her lips pulled upward into a tiny smirk. Kiran looked at his wife wondering what joke he had missed out on.

Harman sat there thoughtfully mulling over the conversation that had just occurred and then smiled as he it suddenly dawned on him what was going on. "Bhaiya, you said you went out the patio doors? But they were locked when I came down this morning."

"They were locked huh?" Kulraj inquired with a hint of mischief in her voice. "Acha...I see now."

"What happened last night?" Veera asked elbowing Preet.

"Yes, what did Bauji see that he asked you and Prem Jiju out to the pool house?" Meher added.

Preet grinned wickedly. "It's not what he saw...it's what he thought he heard. I'm the one who saw a light out there really late last night. I went to the kitchen to get a cup of water and when I walked back I caught this flicker of light out of the corner of my eye. It was in the direction of the pool house. But when I walked up to check the light had disappeared. That's when I noticed the patio doors were not locked. So I locked it."

"Locking someone or somebodies outside," Kulraj chimed in.

All eyes shifted towards Prem and Heer. Prem had a sheepish look on his face while Heer's cheeks had turned red. Her eyes were downcasted focusing on her breakfast plate like it was something fascinating to watch. The siblings all started snickering making the couple feel even more uncomfortable. "Okay, okay..." Bauji hushed. "I think we don't need to ask any more questions."

"Very bold Heer," Ashlesha whispered with a chuckle. "I'd never thought..."

The only thing Meher could say was, "Wow Didi..."

"They're married. And um, as married couples they need their privacy," Bauji announced to the table. "Let it be."

"At this rate of romance...two years may not even come before we hear some good news," Gayatri said with a tiny grin. "Bless you both."

"M-Ma..." Prem stammered. Heer kicked her husband's leg making him look up at her with wide eyes. She was biting her lip and giving him a tiny glare. His eyes lowered in an apologetic gesture. The rest of the family just smirked and continued eating breakfast.

****************************************************************

Dark brown eyes crinkled in mirth as joyous laughter erupted from a slender throat. Her date smiled mesmerized by the sight in front of him. "That's hilarious. Poor Sanjana Di," Veera chortled. "She must have wanted to kill you when she found out you were the one who pulled that prank."

"Two weeks of cleaning," Rishabh replied holding up two fingers. "My hands were really dry after that. I used Sanjana's lotion and smelled like a girl for two weeks."

"You two enjoying yourselves?" Joyti inquired as she and Duncan came over to greet them.

"Congratulations," Veera beamed as she hugged her cousin.

"Congratulations on your Engagement," Rishabh said giving Duncan a handshake.

"Thank you for coming," he replied. "So you're from Australia?

"Yes. I've transferred over to Toronto University for the semester. Sanjana is my cousin. We came down to New York to visit some family members who were visiting here," Rishabh explained. "We ran into Veera in Time Square of all places."

"That's pretty cool. So how do you like it so far?" Duncan inquired.

"New York? It's a great place," Rishabh replied. "It's really full of life."

"But you like Toronto better right?" Duncan quipped back with a wink.

Rishabh knew what he was alluding to and gently glanced over at Veera who was busy talking to her cousin. "Toronto is beautiful," he simply replied back making Duncan smirk.

Duncan was about to ask another question when he stopped and suddenly shouted, "Nihaal!" He waved his hand gesturing him to come over. Joyti and Veera stopped their conversation and looked at Duncan. Veera felt an uneasy churn in her stomach and tired not to look in Nihaal's direction. Joyti just stared at her fiance wondering why he had to go and do this.

"Sorry Joyti, Duncan," Nihaal apologized as he held up his hands.

"It's my fault really," a girl in a satin purple cocktail dress said. "My plane got delayed."

"How is that you're fault?" Nihaal inquired looking at her.

She placed her hand on his shoulder and then looked at Duncan and Joyti, "It's the reason why we're late," pausing with a smile, "you two look picture perfect. Congratulations to you both."

"Thanks Rads," Duncan replied.

"Oh, please forgive me...where are my manners," Rads said as she noticed Veera and Rishabh standing in their circle quietly listening to their conversation. "Hi I'm Radhika Sen but people call me Rads. Very nice to meet you," offering her hand to Rishabh.

"Rishabh Rampal," pausing to look at Veera with a smile and then returning his attention to Radhika, "Her friend."

"That accent...Australian?"

"Yes it is. That's correct," Rishabh said in awe. "Most people guess British."

"My father's company had transferred him to Australian for a few years. So I went to high school there," Radhika explained. She then turned her attention towards Veera.

"I'm Veera Joyti's cousin. Nice to meet you," Veera replied with a polite smile as she shook Radhika's hand.

"Oh, so you're Joyti's cousin? The fashion designer? I'm sure you're going to give Duncan a run for his money once you are finished with school. Good Luck with that. Nothing like healthy competition."

Nihaal played with the collar of his shirt and cleared his throat nervously at their interaction. "Um, Rads, why don't we get something to drink?"

"Oh, okay," she answered, "We'll see you around," and left with Nihaal.

"They are family?" Rishabh inquired innocently.

"No, not really. Nihaal is my best friend but he's also Veera's sister-in-law's brother," Duncan explained.

"Heer Bhabhi is Nihaal's sister," Veera said.

"Oh, she's your brother Prem's wife," Rishabh said nodding his head in understanding. "So is Radhika Nihaal's wife?"

Veera's eyes widened at his comment which didn't go unnoticed by Joyti. "If his parents had their way," Duncan joked.

"Ah, the parent's choice," Rishabh softly said.

Joyti glanced over at Veera to see how she was taking the news. She just politely smiled and then excused herself from the group. Joyti casted a look towards her fiance who understood her meaning and started talking to Rishabh to preoccupy him while Joyti went to look for her cousin. Joyti found Veera outside one of the balconies taking in some fresh air. "Are you okay?" Joyti inquired.

"Sure," Veera said turning around flashing a fake smile. "I was just out here getting some fresh air. What are you doing here? This is your engagement party."

Joyti walked closer and gently wiped her thumb against her cheek, "You're fine?" she asked showing the wetness on the pad of her thumb. "Oh Veera..."

"It's okay. He has ever right to see whoever he wants to. We never had that kind of relationship," Veera said. "Anyways, they look good together."

"It will get better," Joyti said giving her a comforting hug. "Go out more with your friends...you're still young...you have plenty of opportunities, understand?"

"I know," Veera said through a watery smile.

"Maybe you should take a trip to Australia for the summer...you have the perfect guide to guide you through the country," Joyti lightheartedly teased causing Veera to laugh.

"Joytttiii..." she squealed. "Rishabh is just a friend."

"I know. I know. Take things slow, okay?"

"I will," Veera replied with a nod.
