Chapter 6
At FarOut aka Chaos Central, everyone was back for a post mortem after the shoot. Fari's outer office, which was Shanu's preserve was milling with people. If Fari's assistant was Shanu, then Shanu's assistant was Brad. He sat behind Shanu's desk and was meant to be doing any heavy lifting and carrying. It mainly involved carrying bundles of magazines, wheeling in racks of clothes. Rest of the time he was glued to his laptop looking for the next hot spot to ski in. "You Beauty!" he yelled just as Shanu was bending down to retrieve a dropped pen.
"Are you referring to me??" Shanu yelled. Brad looked a bit stunned. Fari looked up from her desk with a frown. Anu laughed, "He's just found a skiing place. He meant awesome."
"Awesome?" Shanu didn't look convinced.
"Yeah, it's Aussie slang, a cross between awesome and 'yeh hui na baat!' is what he meant." Anu hadn't stopped laughing and Heer was joining in too. Prem was shaking his head slightly and wondering how he got involved with this bunch of crazies.
Shanu recovered her composure, "Oh! Right! Fine! But...what's yeh hui na baat???"
As everyone except Brad and Prem fell about laughing, Fari got up from her desk and came round,
"Don't make me say Aaye Rabba! What is going on here? Was the shoot such a disaster that you have to make fun of it? Come on people! My nemsis, the great Amu Hardikar, who makes life hard, is closing in on sales figures. If she sells more than me this month, I'll EAT MY HAT!"
Everyone simmered down on hearing Hardikar's name. Someone had suggested that her picture needed to be put on the wall, so that people were on their toes and Fari could throw darts.
A rivalry that sold many gossip magazines was this Fari Amu dushmani. Heer had considered working there but Hardikar's fashion philosophy was hard to decipher. It was either all black or all white. And once she had got a model to pose with an albatross that had a wing span twice as wide as the room. Heer appreciated the boldness. Maybe after FarOut she would end up at Vanilla. Question was, where would Prem go next? She hoped Vanilla!
"I think we have what it takes to be number 1 this month." Prem's voice sounded different. But then everyone realised that they hadn't really heard it before. Heer hurriedly looked for a chair to sit in, else she would have been on the floor. What was wrong with her? She needed to shake this Prem trance off and concentrate.
"Well I'm glad SOMEONE's on my side today!"
Fari was trying to shake the Hardikar menace hanging over her head.
"People! Listen up! That Hardikar needs to be dealt with. This city isn't big enough for the both of us! So Prem will tell you what to do and you will do it!"
With that Fari stomped out. Shanu looked expectantly at Prem, why wasn't he talking? Does he only speak a sentence a day?
Heer was wondering whether Prem had bitten off more than he could chew. This was high stakes fashion wars, not a picture contest. If the clothes weren't right, nothing else would count. She needed to talk to him.
