Chapter 1
Prem was on a flight from Manchester to Luton. A change of place, he thought, was the first thing he needed to do. Too much had happened, too much pain. And staying in Manchester was not possible for him any longer. He was a proud northerner but for now he would go south. To London.
Heer was doing what she loved. Walking in the cold November air. The Yorkshire Moors were a thing of beauty to her. It was home. A tree with no leaves, thick clouds seeming to bellow just a few feet above her, a bracing wind that whistled past her ears and nose, it's what made her feel good. But she would leave for London tomorrow. Leeds had the right atmosphere but the wrong opportunities for her.
Fari sat in her London offices on the Strand and looked out the window at the Thames. Urrgh! No inspiration ever came to her from the Thames. Being a successful fashion magazine editor required regular doses of inspiration and she would need to get it from somewhere today before 5 PM.
Shanu, Fari's secretary didn't have any such worries. She kept the meetings organised and got Fari's fussy lunch orders, but her main interest was in the British Astronomical Association. Yes, everyone has to have a passion for something.
Prem made his way from Luton to London. To Earl's Court, where he was renting. The landlord handed the keys and Prem threw his bags in, closed the door and went out on the streets. He needed to clear his head of baggage. He would need a clear head for the interview. So he traipsed around Bond Street, Camden, Carnaby and a few other spots to get a feel for what was worn on the street. He tended to like the more bohemian look, although his personality was more severe than that, almost funeral black at the moment. Memories never seem to switch off to order. Conscious effort was needed all the time to keep certain images and words from crowding out his sanity.
Fari gave one of her theatrical signs to Shanu, where was the next appointment? Shanu gestured back through the glass partition, they should be here by now, not my fault. Fari paced up and down, getting a list of questions organised in her head. There was a knock. Finally, the 3PM was here.
"Heer is it?" Fari asked offering her hand. "Yes, Hi." Heer shook hands.
Questions were things that should be formed after an encounter, so Fari forgot her questions and sized up this new potential employee by how she looked. In the fashion industry, such superficial appraisals were necessary. Heer looked well put together, but without fuss. And it managed to be unique in some ways. All the main boxes were ticked, as far as Fari could see.
But could she work with Heer? Personalities that worked well together would mean, fast paced brainstorming , agreement on certain basic things and an ability to adapt to one another's views. Fashion was very subjective, but if two could agree, it could have the power to set a trend. Heer was certainly capable of setting trends. She had the self assurance and the ability to selectively tune out negativity.
Back at his flat, Prem unpacked. He had thrown his camera equipment just inside the door, now he unpacked it, carefully this time. The camera was his friend. Through the lens he saw what he wanted to see. Beauty. Every shot carefully framed according to a template that he had already worked out in his head. A girl's face. That's more or less what he had focused on for most of his career. Faces that were frozen in time by the press of his index finger. Click! Then he would look at another one of God's exquisite creations, frame by frame. It never ceased to amaze him. How every face told a different story. The eyes spoke, even when the rest of the face refused to.
Getting hired by FarOut was a walk in the park. One look at his portfolio and Fari knew he could deliver. One look at him had given Fari other ideas. Rakishly good looking, a slight brood, a hint at intensity, no hope of a smile. He had the attitude some of her models did. Take it or leave it! His work spoke for itself, he didn't need to, except when he instructed his subject about what he wanted. Yes, Fari could work with him. Results mattered and she had deadlines every day.
Shanu hadn't really taken much notice of Prem when he had walked in. But then he had stood next to her desk, waiting to be acknowledged. Shanu knew the type. Arrogant. No other polite word for it. So she ignored him. And when it was time she had buzzed Fari. Fari, could also be standoffish when absorbed in something, but it was never deliberate. Not like this Prem person. Shanu wasn't impressed. She wondered for a second how long this god's gift was going to hang around FarOut. It looked to her that he was not too interested, just restless and preoccupied. Something going on in that head. But what? Shanu thought about that, and then thought about the moon. No, the moon was far more interesting.
