Chapter 18

It was still dark in East Marwin and the sun was to be expected soon. A man was sitting in his room and writing something. Someone moved the curtains and he turned around to see his wife. She was dressed in a light purple dress with a shawl around her shoulders and her hair was tied in a bun with some of the bangs let loose on the side of her face.

Wife: "I am taking breakfast to sheena, she is still down with her bad leg. Will you be alright?" she asked with a worried look.

Man: "I should be fine, I have my accounts to finish." she asked.

Wife: "That's not what about taking about Radhe. I am worried about you."

Radhe: "you should be worried, even for your own safety amoli. Make sure you stay on the main roads today."

Amoli: "Don't you think its possible that you are over-reacting to all this."

Radhe: "its two of us dead already. I don't care if they look like accidents. I know for sure that someone is targeting the resistance army. When heer gets here'we will find out who?"

Amoli: "heer is coming?" she asked with a smile.

Radhe: "yes, I sent her a message. Once she comes here, you will know I am telling the truth."

She moved forward and caressed his cheek.

Amoli: "I don't need anyone to tell me that I should believe in my husband," she said as she quickly pecked his lips and left.

In the forest, dharam and prem were getting ready to leave and packing their bags.

Prem: "so, do you know where we are taking the box?" he asked referring to the box of orden.

Dharam: "one place in all the midlands where rishab wouldn't be able to get in to, neither by spell nor by magic'. the ancient crypt of traverang. But, with a detour to my home to pick up the keys."

At that moment, heer came running from somewhere.

Heer: "pack up'we need to go now!" she told them both.

Dharam: "agreed. It's a day walk to my house and three more to traverang."

Heer: "We need to go through East Marwin. This letter found its place to me in the market. Some friends of mine are in trouble," she said as she handed prem the letter.

Prem read it and gave it to dharam.

Dharam: "the entire midlands are in trouble if we don't get this box somewhere safe."

Heer: "I know but this friend is a leader in the resistance army. He and his wife risked their life to hide me when I was running with the book of counted shadows. We will just have to meet up later."

Prem: "wait! You cant go alone!"

Before heer could answer, "he is right," dharam stated.

Dharam: "A confessor cant travel without the seeker and the seeker shouldn't travel without his confessor, but who will trouble an old man hid in a cloak," he said.

Heer: "thank you dharma," she said smilingly.

Dharam: "I will meet you both day after tomorrow with the keys. The box goes with me. Too many daharans are looking for the seeker with the box," he said as he gave prem and heer a hug and left to find the keys. Prem and heer also started their travel to Radhe and Amoli's house.

Hours passed and prem heer reached their destination. Heer knocked on the door, but found it open. She pushed it open and called for her friends. She walked in to see Radhe on the floor in a pool of blood and was next to him crying. Prem and heer stood there shocked. Prem put a hand on heer's shoulder and showed her the state amoli was in. Heer wiped her tears and ran up to Amoli and tried to calm her down.

Minutes later, someone walked running in.
"I came as fast I could," the person said without seeing Radhe on the floor.
Seeing him, he ran to the body, "Eternal darkness upon the sould of whoever did this," he said sadly.
Wiping her tears, "this is constable dipesh. you can speak in front of him, he is one of our own," Amoli told heer.
"I am Heer Maan," she said introducing herself.
Dipesh: "Its been a long time since there has been a confessor here. You are here just when most needed."
"I am Prem Juneja," prem said.
Seeing the sword of truth, "its truly an honor to meet the seeker, only I wish we have met under happier circumstances," dipesh said.
He then turned to Amoli, "do you have any idea who did this?" he asked and amoli nodded a no.
Heer sat in front of Amoli, "I cant bring Radhe back, but I promise you on my powers as a confessor that I will bring whoever did this to justice," she said.
Heer: "Radhe knew he was in trouble. The letter he sent to me said that two men in your group were already dead."
Dipesh: "yes, we believed that they were murdered by traitors in league with the daharans. One of them appeared to have taken his own like, but there was no reason for him to do so. And the other was crushed under his own wagon while fixing a wheel, but no one saw it happened," he explained.
Prem: "when was the last time you saw your husband?" he asked amoli.
Amoli: "I left just before sunrise to meet a sick friend and when I returned...," she said as she started to cry again.
Dipesh: "was anything missing?"
Amoli: "His golden ink quil which his father gave him and the silver bowl that he kept on his desk."
Prem looked down, "The friend you visited. Did she live near a marsh?" prem asked and he sat down and picked up some seeds.
Amoli: "no, a meadow. why?"
Prem: "Its just that these seeds are so fresh, newly fallen. They only grow in grasses near a marsh."
Dipesh: "there is only one marsh around here," he said as both prem heer looked at each other.

They all quickly went to the place where the marsh was. They walked into the house and started to question there.
Man: "I have never been to Radhe's house."
Heer: "Are you sure about that sudhir?"
Sudhir: "yes, I am sure. I tend to stay close to home."
Dipesh: "so you wouldnt know anything about a mysterious highway man who robs people at night? A man like that can even be capable of murder" he asked as sudhir looked at him with caution.
Sudhir: "no. I dont know anything about that constable," he replied.
Prem: "Would you anything about this?" he asked as she showed him the seeds.
Dipesh: "The only marsh in East Marwin is by your house," he said as he walked away from them and started to inspect the house.
Heer: "Where were you this morning Sudhir...around sunrise?"
Sudhir: "I was in the woods, hunting."
Heer: "You cant lie to a confessor."
Dipesh: "Never been to Radhe's house...have you?" he asked as he showed them the gold box with was Radhe's a few hours ago.
Sudhir tried to run, but Dipesh caught them. Just then, a girl came into the house.
Girl: "what are you doing?"
Dipesh: "sorry kamoudi. your brother is a murderer of Radhe."
Kamoudi: "no...that cant be true. Sudhir would never do that," she said as she tried to stop them.
"Please dont make this harder than it is," prem said as he stopped kamoudi.
They left taking Sudhir as kamoudi stood there looking at the way they have taken her brother.

For hours, heer tried to ask Sudhir what the truth was, but he wouldn't tell her anything.
Heer: "he wont tell me anything," she said as she took a seat in front of Dipesh and Prem in the police station.
Dipesh: "Will you confess him?" he asked as prem looked at heer, as she nodded.
Prem: "But, what if you are wrong? I mean Sudhir would lose his free will."
Heer: "Prem, I know he is lying."
Prem: "We have counsels and judges that determine if a person is guilty or not before punishing him."
Dipesh: "counsels and judges...no matter how wise, make mistakes, confessors dont," he stated.
Prem wasnt convinced. He still didnt think it was right to confess Sudhir even if he was guilty.
Heer: "Its three murders prem. We owe it Radhe and we owe it to the resistance," she said looking at prem and knowing he was unsure.
Prem was still unsure, but he went ahead and agreed to it. Sudhir was confessed and he told heer everything from how he went to Radhe's house...how he killed him...and he stole the things to make it look like it was a robbery. Sudhir was hanged in front of the public of town by stating what he has done and that he has accepted it.

After the hanging took place, Dipesh walked up to heer.
Dipesh: "I am glad you could come on time. I loved Radhe like a brother and I know you did too. I am sorry for your lose."
Heer: "thank you for helping me bring justice to Radhe. He risked his life so many times fighting for freedom and now, losing him over a common robbery."
Prem: "It still doesnt explain the other two deaths."

Right then, a middle aged man came limping as fast as he could to Dipesh.
Man: "constable...I have been robbed."
DIpesh: "ok. have a seat, I will find you a healer first," he said seeing his hurt foot.
Man: "no, I need to find the man first."
Dipesh: "when and where did the robbery happen?"
Man: "In the morning, just after sunrise. A highway man put a blade to my throat; I tried to fight him off, but he was too strong."
Dipesh: "ok, come to the station...you can identify the man and we will try to find him."
Man: "I dont need to identify him...he is right here," he said pointing to Sudhir, who was being taken on a stretcher, lifeless.

Heer: "That cant be. Sudhir was here in East Marwin taking a life of another man at sunrise."
Man: "No, I am telling you...he is one who robbed me."
Prem: "If thats true, we just executed an innocent man," he said as heer stood there stunned.

On the other side of the midlands, Dharam walked from the forest into the city. Reaching a little cabin, he stopped seeing a man outside, working in the garden.

Dharam: "Ram!" he yelled happily.

The man looked up and went back to his work.

Dharam: "Didn't you recognize me? Its me dharam."

Ram: "yes, how could I forget'its only been 20 some years."

Dharam: "I had to go. I had matter of great importance and I couldn't even send a message because I was on the other side of the boundary."

Ram: "of course I am sure."

Dharam: "Ram'is mother'," he hesitated.

Ram: "here? Where else could she be?"

Ram moved forward and motioned dharam to follow. Reaching a huge tree, ram stopped and dharam went ahead. Seeing what was in front of him, he stood there shocked. He saw a tomb laid down with his mother's name on it. Tears rolled down his cheeks as he ran his hand over the stone.

Dharam: "when?"

Ram: "Five years ago! Your name was the last thing on her lips. Where is my dharam? Why hasn't he come home?" he said as dharam sobbed hearing his words.

Ram came forward and placed a hand on dharam's shoulder consoling him.

Ram: "come in and change. I will make something for you to eat," he said as he took dharam inside the house.

Back in East Marwin, Heer was questioning the man who has claimed that sudhir has stolen stuff from him.

Heer: "so someone robbed you by putting a blade on your throat? You should have been frightened?"

Man: "of course I was, but I know what I saw."

Heer: "I know'similar clothes, identical beard'may be even similar hair'"

Man: "don't forget his eyes," he told her.

Heer: "oh'yes'his eyes'did you look at his eyes?"

Man: "yes I did."

Heer: "just like you have been looking into mine for the past hour? What color are they? My eyes?" she asked as she moved behind the man.

Man: "hmm'blue?" he said unsure.

Heer: "nope'they are brown," she said as she moved back in front of him again.

Heer: "it's amazing how the mind plays tricks on you under pressure. Or maybe someone paid you to come here and say all this?" she suspected.

Man: "and stab me?"

Heer: "may be a warning to show you what they will do if they don't do as they say."

Man: "that man robbed me!"

Before heer could say anything, prem pulled her to a corner.

Prem: "When you confess someone, they fall in love with you right?" he asked and she nodded.

Prem: "Are you sure that once you confessed Sudhir he didn't just tell you what you wanted to hear?"

Heer: "That can't be possible. A confessed can never lie to a confessor."

Heer turned to the man, "What did they steal from you?" she asked.
Man: "A bag of silver...all my tools and a bracelet made of green stones in a gold circlet with rubies at the end."
Heer: "you are lying!" she yelled.
Man: "what are you going to do? confess me? Apparently, your confessions arent all that reliable."
As heer stood there hurt, prem walked up the man, "wait...did you say a green bracelet?" he asked.
Prem took all of them to Sudhir's house where they found the same bracelet on kamoudi's hand.
Man: "this is the bracelet...its mine."
Prem: "Where did you get this from?" he asked kamoudi.
Kamoudi: "Sudhir gave it to me this morning," she said with tears in her eyes as she remembered her brother.
Man: "Right after he stole it from me."
Kamoudi: "He stole it from you this morning? That means he couldnt have killed Radhe. My brother might have been a thief, but he cant kill anyone."
"you killed him. he didnt have to die," she yelled as she came to attack heer. Prem quickly came in between and stopped her and dipesh caught her.

They all left from there and went back to Radhe's house.
Dipesh: "I am sorry Amoli, but Sudhir didnt kill Radhe. He was robbing a man when Radhe died"
Amoli: "But, how is that possible? you confessed him heer. I dont understand."
Heer: "Neither do I."
Amoli: "Then, how did Radhe's things get to Sudhir's house?"
Dipesh: "we are trying to find answers."
Prem: "may be we already have them," he said as both heer and dipesh turned to look at him.
Prem: "Unless a man can be at two places at one time...then this whole thing is crazy. And everytime something crazy happens in the midlands...there is always one thing behind it: magic."
Heer: "Prem..."
Prem: "No, I am right about this."
Prem: "Is there anyone in East Marwin who has magic?" he asked dipesh.
Dipesh: "There is a man up in the caves who claims to be a socerer," he informed them.

It was late at night and the moon was up in the sky. Prem and heer were walking in the forest discussing about what has happened the whole day.
Heer: "An innocent man died because of me," she said blaming herself.
Prem: "Heer...its not your fault. May be someone is doing something to you. May be rishab is doing something to you."
Heer: "No! No one can do anything to me. Not even a wizard of the first order has powers powerful enough to go against a confessor. There is something wrong with me," she said sadly.

Prem: "Heer'its not your fault!" he told her again.

Heer: "But, I killed an innocent man. Believe me prem, I didn't want to kill sudhir; I was just trying to get justice for Radhe," she went on blabbering.
Prem: "hey...heer'listen to me. You don't need to explain anything to me. who you are is more than some power you have," he told her.
Moving close to her, he took her hands in his. Looking deep into her eyes, "There is an explanation to all this and I promise you that we will find it," he said determined as she nodded.

Right then, prem heard something click in the silent forest. He turned to see an arrow coming their way and he pushed heer aside to protect her. He then caught her wrist and pulled her on the ground with him. "ahhhh!" she yelled as an arrow ran through in her skin just below the knee.
After heer got hurt, the person started to run.
Heer: "go...get him!"
Prem: "I am going to pull it out." he told her and she nodded unsure.
As prem was about to pull it out, "its going to hurt," she said as she stopped him.
He turned and looked deep into her eyes telling her that she was going to be fine. Telling her it may hurt a little, but it was for the good of her. Without even her knowing, he pulled it out without even her knowing it.
Heer: "go...find him...I am fine."
Prem: "I am not leaving you!"
Heer: "I can walk. I will go into town and find dipesh. you go...now!"
"Be careful," he said as he started to run behind the person.
He started to track the person and stopped when he reached somewhere. He looked up to a see a familiar place....Sudhir's house.

Precap: So, whose the real killer? who is trying to kill heer? Is the truth what it really seems like or something else?
