I don't have anything to say about this one, except it was inspired by Bhav and her Cinderella shot, and she knows why! *hugs*

She awoke with a grin on her face as she saw the sun shining in through the big wall to wall glass window. Today looks like such a glorious day, She wrapped a short gown around herself and ran to the bright window. "Happy Birthday to me!" She smiled as she opened the window a bit to hear the birds chirping.

Ajj Din Chadheya Tere Rang Warga
Phool Sa Hai Khila Aaj Din

Meher bounced down the large staircase to be greeted by an empty hall and so she ran to the kitchen and halted as she heard voices coming from there.

"Don't say it too loudly," Heer said in a whisper.

"Heer, I love you okay, but that doesn't mean you always boss me around," Meher smiled as she heard a pout in Prem's voice.

Prem and her sister Heer had been engaged for the last 4 months and their wedding was to be held sometime in two months; date wasn't final yet.

Not wanting to be seen just yet she ran around the corner and hid behind one of the large pillars in the hall.

"I swear I heard her coming down the stairs," Heer said looking around as she put an object on the table. Meher tried hard to peer at it from where she stood but she couldn't see anything since Prem stood in the way, blocking her view.

"I found her!" Heer announced as she grabbed Meher's arm. "Happy birthday sweetie!" She hugged her little sister tightly. "Sleep well?"

Meher had to laugh. Every day it was the same question. She knew Heer thought it was her responsibility to take care of Meher since their parent's death 5 years back but Meher didn't need that anymore. "I'm fine di,"

"Happy Birthday Meher," Prem brought out a yellow rose from his back and offered it to Meher, knowing it was her favorite kind of rose.

"Thank you Prem jiju," Meher grinned, she knew how much Prem loved it when she called him that.

She casually looked around and Heer caught her eye. "Kisse dhoond rahi ho?"

"Woh—uhh Preet nahin aaya?" She asked Prem rather than Heer.

Prem smiled. He was the only fortunate person who knew about the crush that Meher had developed on his younger brother Preet. He slowly shook his head. "Sorry Meher,"

Meher sighed. "I'm going to go get my cell phone," she told them quickly as she went up the stairs.

She collapsed on her bed and silently lay there. There were no tears coming out, just like there shouldn't be. There was no use crying over Preet; he was someone she thought she was friends with but no, he was merely a boy she thought about a lot, and he was someone who was on her mind 24/7 not to mention the dreams she had of him every night.

Silently a single tear fell and she knew it wasn't just a crush.

Rabba Mere Din Yeh Na Dhale,

Woh Jo Mujhe Khwaab Mein Mile

"Psht Meher! Let me in!" She heard a voice coming faintly from somewhere. She stood quickly and took account of her room and saw a faint outline of someone on the balcony. She brushed away her tears and took away the satin blinds.

"Preet? What are you doing here?"

He hopped into her room and smiled. "Came to wish you a happy birthday,"

Meher smiled. He hadn't forgotten her special day. Her smile grew wider as she saw the bunch of red roses he pulled from behind his back.

"Hope you like them," He smiled at her.

"Love them, thank you," She took the flowers from him and set them on her dresser before turning back to Preet.

"Come here!" He took her by the arm and pulled her close for a hug.

Meher felt herself being lifted slightly off the ground as Preet hugged her enthusiastically. This was the moment she'd always dreamed of.

Use Tu Lagaade Abb Gale,

Tenu Dil Da Waasta

Of course in her dreams, he'd be hugging her like this after he proposed and she'd be dressed in a gorgeous anarkali suit and he'd look dashing in a nice blazer, but this wasn't her dream and so the next words she heard burst her protective bubble.

Rabba Aaya Dar De Yaar De,

Saara Jahaan Chod Chad Ke

"I'm going to propose to Ashlesha tonight," He whispered in her ear as he continued hugging her.

Meher's eyes widened. This was wrong. The dream was that he'd propose to HER. Where did Ashlesha factor in?

Mere Sapane Sawaar De,

Tennu Dil Da Waasta

He just took her dreams and ripped them to shreds in front of her and she was left watching.

"As—Ashlesha?" She uttered slowly.

He let go of her and smiled. "Of course! She has been my girlfriend for the past six months, might as well take this relation forward. What do you say?"

Meher forced a small smile on her face. She had no right to say anything to Preet. They weren't best friends or anything that she could say something and expect him to reveal his undying love for her. This was a stupid movie that she was so in love with. This was real life and she was on the verge of losing the one she loved.

Ajj Din Chadheya, Tere Rang Warga

"Well? Meher come on, say something?" Preet asked a bit too loudly.

"Your cell phone?" Heer asked as she walked in through the door. "Preet doesn't look like your cell phone."

Prem followed her in to the room and saw Preet and Meher standing close together and so he smiled. Maybe it was a sign.

"Hey guys. I just told Meher about my plans to propose to Ash today!" Preet said happily as Heer congratulated him.

Prem saw the broken look on Meher's face and he wanted to go to her and comfort the girl he thought of as his younger sister.

"Meher, you never told me what you think?" Preet asked as he turned to Meher who had a vacant look still in her eyes.

"I—" she quickly glanced up at Prem who sadly nodded and so she nodded back. "I think it's a great idea. She'll love it."

Preet hugged her again. "I can't wait to tell her. Meher thanks! I know we're not so close but I appreciate having you in my life," With that he took Heer and Prem and strolled out of the room with the mention of cake by Heer.

Meri Bhi Aahon Ko, Sun Le Duwaaon Ko
Mujhko Woh Dila Maine Jisko Hai Dil Diya

"I wanted you in my life," she mumbled after him.

She couldn't believe she had been so naive. She had known he was close with Ashlesha, but never once had it crossed her mind that he must be in love with her. Yet, now that she knew it all made sense.

It made sense but that didn't stop it from hurting her even more.

Rabba Mere Naam Kar Use,

Tenu Dil Da Waasta

She had thought that finally know that she was a year older, maybe he'd find her more mature and maybe just maybe something could spark from their friendship, but she wasn't destined to find the same happiness that her sister had.

Maanga Jo Mera Hai, Jaata Kya Tera Hai
Maine Kaun Si Tujhse Jannat Maang Li

All she wanted was him. He was someone who with a smile could make her feel alright. There was nothing more than a few words exchanged between them but still she felt herself grow attached and now she was the one hurting as if the attachment had broken.

Kaisa Khuda Hai Tu, Bas Naam Ka Hai Tu
Rabba Jo Teri Itni Si Bhi Na Chali

She fell to her knees and lay her head on her bed, letting the bottled up tears flow down her cheeks. She blinked furiously to stop the tears and her eyes fell on her dresser or more specifically something bright and red on her dresser.

The roses.

Lying there without water even they looked slightly wilted just the way she felt. She stood and picked them up and quickly put them in a vase; not willingly to let them suffer the way she was. Her roses would continue to blossom and that would teach her to keep faith and live her life the way her God intended her to.

Kaisa Khuda Hai Tu, Bas Naam Ka Hai Tu
Rabba Jo Teri Itni Si Bhi Na Chali

She had enough faith left in her heart to know and understand that maybe what she felt for Preet wasn't love. Just infatuation, the only thing that made it worse was how much it seemed to hurt her heart. She didn't want to give him the satisfaction of hurting her like this. She'd change.

She vowed then to live her life happily and go for the things that made her feel special, she wouldn't give her heart away like this again, not ever.

Oh, you know I loved it. It was perfect in expressing her unrequited love, and the end, the way she refuses to let the flowers die like she did inside, was beautiful.

The whole thing was beautiful, and I said it earlier, and say it again, one of the best pieces of work of yours.

Love,
Radz

*hugs* You're awesome, Meera.

And yeah. Like Radz said, one of your best so far. I was this close to crying.
I love the whole unrequited love thing. And what I preferred about this one (in comparison to Cinderella) was how Meher decided that she would move on, not let the roses wilt.
Okay ow headache. I so need to get out of my funk.
Love,
Bhav (:

I agree. One of your best pieces to date. :) You never cease to amaze Meera. 🤗

That was so beautiful, the symbolism with the love vs. her love never dying. Honestly Meera...how do you do it?
