"Let's go," I felt Maddy tug at my left arm while Shabo kept a firm grip on my right.
"No—we need to talk to him." Shabo said.
My cheeks burned, I couldn't take a step in either direction. Neither towards him or away—this felt like a stab to my heart.
My eyes could not leave the two of them behind the three. He looked just the same as he always did, the curly hair, but she; she was a completely different story. She wore expensive clothes just like the ones I wished I could have flipping through catalogues.
"Come on Meher," Maddy once again tried moving me from my spot.
It was Sanjana though—who pulled me from my trance like state. She was the one who said the words I'd been asking myself the minute I saw Harman with this new girl.
"Wow—who is that Meher?"
"Shut up and LEAVE Sanjana," Shabo growled at her.
Sanjana just stood there and smirked but that really was the least of my worries. How could Harman do this to me? In my own city? This was the lowest of lows yet there was a part of me that longed to be pulled into his strong arms and just be assured that everything that was happening was just a stupid dream.
Suddenly Shabo cleared her throat. "Um, hello!"
That certainly got their attention. Harman and the girl both turned to look at us and she had a crease in her forehead giving her a confused look. But Harman, he bit his lip. Giving me the look he always did whenever he was nervous.
"Hey," I finally managed to speak.
Harman didn't say anything. He just kept looking at me and my eyes widened.
Shabo was the one who broke the silence yet again. "I'm Shabo, this is Meher and Maddy," she said to the new girl.
"Hiya!" She exclaimed sweetly. "Are you guy's friends of Harmu's?"
Harmu's? She called him such a sickly sweet name? I had never heard anyone not even his own mother call him something like that.
"Um yeah," he opened his mouth for the first time. "This is Shabo, Maddy and...Meher," His voice grew quiet as he said my name and that hurt. It was like he was deliberately trying not to acknowledge me.
Suddenly I stopped thinking as I was hit at the back of the head. I turned around ready to shoot whoever it was but then I saw Preet rushing towards me with an apologetic look on his face.
"I'm so sorry Meher," He exclaimed. "Saach mein, I didn't mean it."
Behind him I noticed Manav and Mayank rushing towards us—both of whom were looking slightly awkward.
"Hey Maddy," Manav whispered quietly more to the floor than to her actually.
"Hey Manav," She said also looking to the ground.
"Oh god please no," Shabo started smiling see both her friends as nutcases around boys.
"Sorry about that," Preet smiled. "Manav here was supposed to catch the frisbee," He slapped Manav's shoulder and Maddy giggled in delight.
Preet slowly touched the back of my head to examine the spot where he hit me.
"That REALLY hurt!" My voice got loud without my realizing it. I think all the anger that was built up over Harman and his new girl and Sanjana was all pouring out on poor Preet who kept looking at me, scared of my next outburst.
"Meher," his voice changed—oozing with the charm that got him all these little 'favours' from girls. "I know you can handle the pain—you're so strong." He smiled in a way that had the opposite effect on me and just made the tears start pouring out of my eyes.
"Great work genius," Shabo muttered as she took my hand and nodded backwards to Harman. That seemed to get Preet to understand.
"Are you okay?" The new girl asked me.
"Yeah—I uh." I couldn't say another word. Just looking at her smiling at Harman made me sick.
"I'm Preet, this is Manav and Mayank and Meher and—"
"Meher and Maddy and Shabo, jaanti ho," She smiled. "I'm Maya. Harman was actually telling me you guys live here year round? That must be nice. It's such a nice little place."
Manav and Mayank gave each other a look and Shabo rolled her eyes as she went between both the guys and shoved her hands through theirs.
I couldn't take the tension anymore. "Harman,"
His eyes flashed to mine. "I'll call you later okay?"
Maya misunderstood and got all happy. "Yeah, we can all hang out together. That'd be fun."
"No—uh no." Harman said quickly. "They're probably busy."
"No we're—" Maddy started to say before Shabo interrupted.
"Yeah we are busy. Right guys?" She nodded at the group standing with us.
Manav and Mayank instantly nodded and I could tell she was trying to salvage the little self-respect I had left. Preet instantly smiled and put an arm around my shoulders. "Sorry again Meher,"
Shabo smiled and nodded at me to smile back at him and so I did. Then my girls took me away before anyone could see the tears that were spilling out of my eyes.
