How long has it been since I updated? Really long right? I'm sorry. I was stuck, then I wrote it, and forgot I wrote it. And yeah, so I haven't updated in over a month at least. Right? 😆 Oh well, now that Uni has started expect infrequent updates. So please, don't PM me for updates. (And no trying emotional blackmail. Yes, Ravz, that means you. 😆)

Meher fidgeted in her seat again. "Are we –"

"Meher, if you ask me if we're there yet, again, you will regret it," Preet bit out, his eyes not once leaving the long road ahead of them. "Pata nahin tum bachchon ki tarah kyun behave kar rahi ho."

Meher made a face at him, and slunk down into the passenger's seat. Preet stifled a sigh, letting his grip on the steering wheel relax. Whose bright idea had it been to drive to Rajasthan anyways? The name flittered into his mind, and he scoffed. Of course, such a brilliant idea could only be Sanjana's.

The next ten minutes passed relatively quietly, compared to the earlier hour and a half, which had passed with chatter and Meher's incessant questioning. The adults were lucky, Preet lamented silently, having foisted the hyper Meher into his car. Sanjana had wanted 'alone time' with PB, and the remaining three young adults had found themselves together. They had not minded, but Meher was not one who enjoyed being cooped up, and a long car ride with her was not good for Preet's mental health.

Before Meher could open her mouth to, once again, repeat her query, the muscle in Preet's jaw twitched and he told her to switch on some music. She flipped through some radio stations before settling on one with a song Preet recognised vaguely.

The slow melody of the song caught Heer's attention from the outside scenery. There was an indescribable feeling in the pit of her tummy that made her feel equal parts apprehensive and excited. She gave up on trying to figure out her feelings, and listened to the song, which had Meher singing along under her breath.

Yeh Dooriyan,
Yeh Dooriyan,
Yeh Dooriyan.

Inn Rahoon Ki Dooriyan,
Nigahon Ki Dooriyan.
Hum Rahon Ki Dooriyan,
Fanaa Ho Sabhi Dooriyan.

Something tugged at her heart, an ache she recognised, but did not understand. She ignored it, and let the gentle melody, and sweet and sad song lull her to sleep.

'Yeh dooriyan,' trailed into the sound of hooves, matching the beat of the song. The hooves picked up speed. There was indistinct shouting. There was fear, there was confidence. The comforting feel of his hand. There was louder shouting, tears trailing down her face. The words hauntingly trickled through her mind. 'Yeh dooriyan.' Her heart pounded in tandem with the hooves. The hooves stopped.

Preet had been shocked when Meher had not said anything. He snuck a glance at her and was surprised to see her worrying her bottom lip, her eyes locked onto the rearview mirror. A soft, barely perceptible shift in the back seat had him glancing at Heer Di's form. His face cleared, knowing that it was the fact that Heer Di was having a nightmare that bugged Meher. Di tossed her head, pain etched on her face. Preet squeezed Meher's hand lightly. She curled hers around his in a tight grip. A tear dropped onto their joined hands.

There was clarity. A brilliant flash of silver, glinting in the sun. Something hurt, there was screaming. That was her name. Her eyes met his.

Heer's eyes opened, her breath coming out in gasps. She was disoriented, wondering where she was, where he was. It took her a silent moment to gather her wits. She met her sister's inquiring gaze, and Preet's curious one, with a wan smile.

She would have to explain things to Preet, she decided, even if she did not quite understand anything herself.

Prem was bursting with anticipation. He paid no mind to his nattering fianc next to him, his mind's eye far away, painting pictures of places he had read about. He knew how they looked, he did not know how. There was this thrill at this trip. Not of the wedding, no, but at the thought of going back to Rajasthan.

'Back?' Prem wondered where that had come from. He had never been to India in all his twenty-five years, then how could he be going back to Rajasthan? He shook his head, letting himself focus on the road.

There was no denying that there was magic in the air, and that Rajasthan would unveil big things. His heart sang as they passed the last indicator on the road.

Aa Raha Paas Yah Door Jaa Raha,
Janoo Na Main Hoon Kaha Pe.
