Needless to say, I'm looking forward to more. Please forgive me if I don't leave comments on the upcoming parts though. As it is, I hate to leave chindi comments like the one I'm leaving now, and I am short on time to actually leave a longer comment. Rest assured that when I find time (and, once I've replied to the other FFs that have been awaiting a comment from me for...going on months now), I will come back to this and leave you a long comment that I hope, will be worth the wait.

The Handmaiden's Tale

Part Three

Meher accompanied Heer to the drawing room, where Balraaj Maan was making notes on a book. The two ladies were reminiscing about Heer's accomplishments, the most recent one being the Marquis of Avalon, Lord Rishabh Rampal. Heer laughed as she remembered how he had gotten so annoyed at her that he had stormed off in the middle of the night. Meher merely smiled indulgently; she really wished Heer would just give one man a chance. They all seemed like such nice, polite gentlemen.

They entered the drawing room; Heer took a seat in a rather comfortable armchair across from her father while Meher stood behind her, hands folded primly.

"Aapko mujh se baat karni thi, Bauji?" Heer asked.

Balraaj blinked and looked around. He stared at Heer for a moment before registering her. "Ah, Heer, beta! You're here!"

Heer smiled warmly.

"So, um, I'm sure Meher must have told you," Balraaj started, looking nervously at Meher. Meher raised her hands, as if to say, leave me out of this. Balraaj sighed, smiling nervously. "Heer, beta, as I'm sure you've heard, Duke Lalit Juneja's son Prem is on his way here."

Heer sighed heavily. "Bauji, you know I have no interest in getting married."

"Just consider Prem, beta!" Balraaj insisted. "He's a very respectable gentleman –"

"Yes, but so are all the others!" Heer interrupted.

Balraaj frowned at her. "Sorry," she said meekly, sinking back in the chair. She looked up at Meher, who shrugged. They were both stuck here.

"As I was saying, he's a very respectable gentleman, very well-educated too." Balraaj looked at Heer. "Just give him a chance?"

Heer sighed silently. She smiled. "Fine, Bauji."

Balraaj beamed at Heer. "Thank you, beta. They'll be coming tomorrow at noon, so be ready for them. Meher," Balraaj turned to his daughter's lady-in-waiting, "you will handle the preparations, along with Teji and Tanuja."

Meher smiled, pleased that the Count had entrusted her with the preparations again. "Yes, My Lord."

"Very well. The two of you are dismissed."

Heer hugged him. She picked up his glasses from the table and handed them to him. "Don't forget your glasses, Bauji."

"Thank you, Heer, beta."

Smiling, Heer left the room, Meher behind her.

"If I may be excused, My Lady," Meher asked.

Heer nodded her consent. "I'll come with you. I'd like to help Maa prepare for Lord Prem Juneja's arrival tomorrow."

Meher didn't like the way Heer said Lord Prem Juneja; it was devious, and Meher knew she was already plotting how she would get rid of him.

The two of them went in search of their mothers, with Heer wondering which of her old tricks she could use, and thinking up more. After all, she didn't know how easily Prem scared, and she wanted to be prepared.

Betcha can't wait till Heer and Prem meet, huh? Well, lemme tell you this: they're NOT gonna meet in the next part! 😆 Ohmygosh I love being this evil! *goes off cackling evilly*
