Kuch Kum
Part Five
The taxi pulled up to the Juneja residence. Harman paid the driver and stepped out into the hot Ludhiana sun, spending a moment to look at the house. His house. It felt good to be back. He smiled and made his way into the house.

Just next door to the Juneja residence, Kulraaj, Heer, Meher and Kiran were hurriedly making last-minute preparations for Ash's arrival.
"Meher, guest room tayaar hai kya?" Kulraaj yelled from the living room, where she was quickly straightening out the pillows on the couch.
"Ji, Didi!" Meher yelled back. She smoothed down the bedsheet and smiled at her work.
"Meher Maasi, Meher Maasi!" Meher turned at Tannu's voice, smiling at the little girl and scooping her up.
"Bolo, Tannu."
"Meher Maasi, main Berry ko Ash Maasi ke room mein rakh sakti hoon?" Tannu asked, holding out a fuzzy brown teddy bear she slept with every night.
Meher felt her heart melt a little. "Tum toh har raat Berry ke saath soti ho. Tumhe dar nahin lagega?"
Tannu shook her head. "Mere paas Sher Singh hai," she replied, referring to the big lion that Heer and Meher had gotten her for her third birthday.
Meher set Tannu down. "Go ahead, sweetie," she said.
A big smile on her face, Tannu ran to the bed and placed Berry next to the pillow. She turned back to Meher. "Thank you, Meher Maasi!"

The Juneja family was giving Harman a very warm welcome.
"Harman Bhaiya, mera gift kahaan hai?" Preet demanded.
"Arre, Preet, tum bachche nahin ho!" Lalit chided, as Harman smiled and Prem thwacked Preet on the back of his head.
Preet rubbed his head, sulking, wondering what he had said wrong. (After all, he said that every time Harman came back from a business trip, so shouldn't they have been expecting that? And it wasn't as though Harman had ever gotten him anythingโฆ)
"Mera bachcha abhi aaya hai, usse thoda fresh toh hone do!" Gayatri commented. She led Harman away from the group and ushered him up the stairs. "Tum fresh ho jaao, main nashta lagati hoon."
Harman nodded. "Ji, Maa. Thanks."
Gayatri smiled back at him, watching him retreat to his room. She turned back to the family, to three of her boys.
With three sons, Gayatri sometimes wished she had a daughter to pamper, one who would enjoy cooking with her, one she could make clothes for, and one whose bidaai she would one day do.
In these moments, though, one of her boys would always cheer her up. And today was no different.
"Maa!" Preet came up to her, followed by Prem, with Lalit standing back and laughing. "Maa, PB ne mujhe challenge diya hai, aur aaj rotiyaan main banaoonga!"
Gayatri stared at Preet, wondering if he was serious or not. "Beta, tumhe toh toast banana bhi nahin aata!"
"Maine Preet ko yahi bataya hai, Maa, lekin ye meri baat sunne ke liye tayaar nahin hai," Prem chipped in, folding his arms and grinning at Gayatri.
"Maa, aap mujhe help karoge, na?" Preet asked.
Prem cut in. "Nahin, tumhe roti apne aap banani hogi!"
Preet looked from Prem to Gayatri, wondering what he had gotten himself into. Well, whatever it was, Preet Juneja was not one to shy away from a challenge. He puffed out his chest. "Theek hai. Aap dekhna, PB, main itne achche rotiyaan banaoonga ki aap sirf mujhe rotiyaan banane ko kahenge!"
Prem laughed, and Gayatri looked helplessly from one son to the other. Hai Rabba! Ab mere kitchen ka kya hoga?

Ash's taxi pulled up to the Maan residence. She rummaged through her wallet and realized that because of the incident with that idiot, she hadn't changed her US dollars. She swore silently.
"Aap ek minute yahin ruko, main abhi aayi!" Ash told the taxi driver. She got out of the taxi and walked to the entrance, ringing the doorbell.
"Kiran, darvaaza kholo!" Ash smiled as she heard her Kuldi scream to her husband. For someone so small, Kulraaj sure was loud!
The door opened, but no one was there. Ash frowned and looked down, then broke into a grin.
"Ash Maasi!" 6-year-old Varun cried, throwing his arms around his Maasi's legs.
"Hi, Varun! Tum kaise ho?" she asked, picking him up. Boy, was he heavy! She gave him a quick kiss and set him down again.
Kiran came to the door, smiling as he saw Ash. "Ash, hi! I'm so sorry, hum toh bhool gaye ki tum aaj aane vaali thi!"
Varun ran off, screaming to Tannu that Ash Maasi had come.
"It's okay, Jiju," she replied. "Uh, Jiju, sorry, lekin main airport mein apne US dollars change karna bhool gayi, aur mujhe taxi-vaale koโฆ"
Kiran understood. He nodded and reached into his pocket, pulling out his wallet. He followed Ash to the taxi.
The taxi driver had unloaded all four of Ash's (rather heavy) suitcases and did not look too pleased. Of course, that changed after Kiran paid him.
Ash helped Kiran bring her suitcases into the house just as the three Maan girls came outside. Ash set her bags down again, hugging Kulraaj, Heer and Meher and picking up Tannu (who was much lighter than her brother!).
There was a chorus of "Hi"s and apologies as they all admitted they had forgotten about Ash's arrival. As they ushered her into the house, Kiran brought the remaining bags into the house and up to the guest room.
"Tannu, beta, tum Maasi ko guest room dikhana chahti ho?" Kulraaj asked her daughter.
Tannu nodded eagerly. Ash set her down. Tannu grabbed her hand and began pulling her up the stairs.
"Tum fresh ho jaao, main nashta lagati hoon!" Kulraaj called up.
Heer and Meher followed Ash and Tannu to the guest room, talking over each other as bechari Ash struggled with which one to listen to. She gave up and resorted to nodding politely.
Varun was already waiting for them in Ash's room, bouncing lightly on the bed. He stopped as soon as they came in, and ran over to Ash, nearly knocking her down as he hugged her waist. Not to be outdone, Tannu wrapped herself around her Maasi's legs, thus rendering her incapable of movement.
As she looked helplessly to an oblivious Heer and a laughing Meher, Varun peered up at her. "Ash Maasi, humare gift kahaan hai?"
"Haan, Maasi! Humare gift kahaan hai?" Tannu echoed.
It was Kiran to the rescue. "Arre, bachchon, apni Maasi ko thoda time do na! Pehle usse breakfast karna hai. Phir usse nahana hai, aur phir voh unpack karegi, aur uske baad tum dono ko apne-apne gifts milenge, theek hai?"
Varun and Tannu looked at each other, Tannu taking her cues from her big brother. Varun nodded. "Theek hai."
Kiran pried his kids off their Maasi. "Ab chalo, Mama ko help karte hain!"
Ash mouthed a 'thank you' to Kiran, sitting down on the bed as he winked back at her and led the kids out. Fifteen minutes in the Maan residence had already tired her out. How was she to survive the next few months?
