Chapter 31 – Unexpected
Neesha confrontation scn is a slightly modified version of a scn from a south Indian soap "Omanathingal Pakshi"

He was late, again, now why was that not surprising. She had waited for 15 whole minutes before starting to get impatient. She decided to keep herself occupied while she waited, else she would go insane. She turned on the music and knew just what to play. She recollected the day when she had stood in front of her mother wearing the dress she made, showing her how pretty she looked. She had picked up the edges of her dress and skipped about around her mother who was too busy telling stories of her own romance to notice the disappointment on Ayesha's face. She felt like that 8 year old again as she closed her eyes and did a Waltz with an imaginary partner, to a song by Josh Groban (So she dances).

He had been watching her for sometime before he decided to make his way into the hall. She wouldn't have noticed because she was dancing away with her eyes closed. He stood in the middle of the room with his hands in his pocket, and a resemblance of a smile on his face, not daring to make a noise as she swayed and circled happily without a care in the world. She even let out a chuckle once.

She had let herself go, go into the past, into the carefree child that she once was. But that brought back terrible memories with it. As she found her joy crashing to an end she opened her eyes only to crash into Neev who had been watching her?? But before she could feel embarrassed or conscience he held both her hands and the waltz continued as he whispered into her ears, "I think this looks better with two". The smile on her face returned as she looked up to him. She didn't know if it was the constant circular motion or the fact that she was staring at Neev's face that was only inches away from hers, or was it her happiness that was starting to make her dizzy. She closed her eyes to keep this moment, this feeling from leaving her. And she kept them closed when she felt a soft graze on her lips, because that moment was just so perfect. For a brief moment she thought, even she had kissed him back, but the thought that, "He kissed me", shook her violently and she opened her eyes and pushed him away in an instant.

He stumbled back, a bit baffled. He had just kissed her, but he was sure that it was mutual. Then why did she push him so hard? He had that question in his eyes but Ayesha didn't leave any room for questioning. She refused to look at him and she almost ran out of the hall back to her room. Suddenly he felt slightly angry instead of confused. He followed her, but before he could say anything, she shot him an equally angry look and clarified, "It was a mistake." "It was my mistake. I should have never agreed to do this. Why did I let Anjali talk me into this. I am going to tell her that I can't." With that she stormed out of their room and towards Anjali. Neev was left calling after her and trying to match her angry pace.

Ayesha walked into Anjali's room, forgetting to knock. She found Anjali engrossed in arranging photographs that lay scattered on her bed. Even the noise she had made slamming the door behind her didn't startle the girl. Neev however, did break her concentration as he walked in after Ayesha. She looked up and with a smile said, "hey guys, I am glad you are both here. I need some help. Can you help me pick the best ones".

"No", came a flat reply from Ayesha. Anjali furrowed her brows slightly, registering the look on both their faces. "What's wrong?" she asked addressing both of them.

Ayesha: "I can't do the dance for you."
Anjali: "What dance?"
Now Ayesha was surprised.
Anjali: "Oooooooooooooooooh, that dance. Oh I am so sorry guys, I forgot to tell you. You guys don't need to do the dance anymore."
Anjali would have explained but Ayesha cut her off, "That's great! just perfect! Thankyou for letting me know now", and she stormed out in the same manner she had come in.
Anjali looked at Neev who still seemed to care for an explanation. "Well, I think I forgot to mention that my friend is from a Brahmin family. So once the bride was here in India, the guy's family brainwashed her, basically, and told her all the rituals and ceremonies that they would have post marriage, and the bride pretty much fell for it. Now she wants a full Indian wedding and therefore, sans the tango." She shrugged her shoulders in a way of saying that its not her fault. On another day, Neev would have questioned her more, because he was sure more than ever that Anjali was lying through her teeth. But he would rather tend to Ayesha first. He too took his leave and Anjali focused her attention back to the photographs.

Neev came back to the room in a much calmer mood. The pacing between rooms had allowed him time to think and he felt it was a much better approach to be calm. He found her sitting on her bed, her hands hugging her bent knees. He stood there for a few seconds as the door closed behind him. She was forcing her neck to the right and breathing deeply. She was still angry, he thought.

Not wanting to confront him, nor wanting to hear the questions he had, which were the same questions she had not dared to ask herself, she got off the bed and walked to her closet and pretended to search for something. He walked up behind her slowly. "Ayesha, can we talk", his tone was soft and that made her loosen up a little bit too. But she was still stiff with anger, though she didn't know whom she was angry with. She turned around and without meeting his gaze she tried to brush him off, "I need to take a shower, Neev. I don't want to talk". But he didn't budge. She was trapped between his body and the closet and he seemed to want to put her further inside. He took a step closer as she backed up and he put his hands on either side of the closet door. "We will talk, Ayesha", he breathed into the very small space between them. Ayesha didn't even have anyplace else to look. She met his angry gaze and now her eyes reflected the same anger. "Get out of my way Neev" she said as she pushed one of he hands down and tried to get away. But he grabbed her other arm by the elbow and pulled her back into the same position. She stared daggers at him and finally crossed her arms in a manner to give him permission to speak.

Neev: "What happened downstairs was not a mistake, Ayesha. It was deliberate. I kissed you. Because I wanted to." Ayesha clenched her jaws as she anticipated the next sentence.
Neev: "But why did you kiss me back Ayesha?"
Ayesha: "I didn't," she lied without looking at him. "I didn't and don't make yourself believe that I did." She continued with her voice a little louder, "In fact I should be the one angry. How dare you do something like that. And when, when we are getting divorced, tomorrow Neev. And you are the one who wanted a divorce, remember. What makes you think you can kiss me just like that and I will let you." She pushed him angrily and he took a few steps back as she stood shivering from rage.
Neev: "But that's just it Ayesha. You did let me. Fine, you want to lie to yourself…go ahead. So you didn't kiss me and it was my mistake that I did. But you can't deny that you didn't stop me either. You enjoyed that kiss before you pushed me," he said with a sly smile.
Ayesha couldn't find words for a comeback.
Neev moved closer and in a more sober tone he said, "I know that you feel something for me Ayesha and you are too afraid to admit it."
Ayesha turned away, refusing to register his words. He forced her to look at him by turning her and he cupped her face. "Look at me Ayesha", he demanded but she wouldn't relent. He tried again to lift her face with a gentle force but she was adamant. "Fine, you don't want to admit it, its fine, tomorrow when our divorce is finalized, it will be too late Ayesha. You will never see me again after that."
Ayesha felt something revolting inside her but she still wouldn't look at him. "This is the last time we will ever talk and that was the first and last kiss we will ever share. Did you hear me, we will never meet again after tomorrow. Are you fine with that? Tell me that you are fine with that and I'll never bother you again." He again tried to force her to look at him…but to his utter surprise she grabbed his right hand and took a bite. After the initial layer of pain that went through his body, he resolved to let her bite her frustration into him.

At that moment they heard a knock on the door and he freed his hand from her mouth as she ran past him into the bathroom. He hid his right hand behind him and opened the door to Ramu Kaka who had come to call them for dinner. After Ramu kaka left, Neev turned to the closed bathroom door. He knocked lightly and said, "Ayesha, that was Ramu kaka calling us for dinner." "I don't want dinner," she spat back quickly. "Ayesha, this might be our last dinner together. Please come down. If nothing else, think about PL who will keep waiting for you at the table". "And I will wait for you too," he added a little later.

Ayesha was sitting on the bathroom floor, tears streaming her cheeks. She didn't know why she was crying, why she had been so filled with rage, and why she had bit him. She didn't know, but she let herself vent and let it out. She let herself cry until she felt a bit lighter. She really didn't have an appetite. But she would go to dinner. Just because… and she heard another knock at the bathroom door. "Ayesha, please jaldi aana, mujhe bohot bhook lagi hai." That was Neev's voice and he sounded so hungry. She wanted to laugh a little at that, but she couldn't. She sat there for another few minutes until her tears were dry and then she washed her face and got dressed and came downstairs.

As she descended down the stairs Neev kept looking at her and she kept his gaze. It wasn't until she sat down and PL asked her something that she broke her concentration. "Ayesha, tum theek ho beta?", PL had questioned looking at her slightly swollen face. "Jee" she said with a distorted smile. Anjali who had been observing the two of them broke in, "Badi maa she is angry with me. Main inko bataana bhool gayi thi ki mere dost ki shaadi mein inka dance cancel ho gaya hai. Tabse upset hai. Neev ke saath dance karne ka chance jo kho gaya." Anjali had laughed at her own joke, and PL only gave a slight smile. Neev kept his interest on the food while Ayesha wished that Anjali was sitting next to her and then she could have possibly strangled her. Anjali had taken over the responsibility of making the mood lighter at the table. But the conversations seemed to be happening only between PL and her. Neev and Ayesha however, seemed to be having a conversation of their own in their silence.

After dinner Ayesha would have retired to her room but Anjali cornered her. When there was no one else in ear shot, Anjali questioned Ayesha about her rotten mood. Why was everyone on her case today? Ayesha made an annoyed expression but Anjali wouldn't leave her alone.

Anjali: "I know whats bothering you Ayesha. I know that you and Neev have the hearing tomorrow."
Ayesha: "Why would that bother me Anjali? If that was such an upsetting thing, I wouldn't have gladly signed the divorce papers."
Anjali: "Exactly Ayesha, why did you gladly sign the papers when it is in fact such an upsetting thing for you."
Ayesha: "Anjali, you don't know me enough to judge what I am upset about. So stop trying."
Anjali: "True, I don't know you well enough. But I know this much, that you were jealous when you saw me and Neev dancing that day. I heard the concern in your voice when Neev called you to ask for Milind's address and I was on the phone instead.
Ayesha: "I was not jealous Anjali. You are simply assuming things."
Anjali: "I have seen the two of you together, dancing, without inhibitions. So don't insult my intelligence by saying that there is nothing left between you and him and so you are ending this relationship. You can lie to yourself all you want Ayesha but the truth is that neither of you want this divorce.
Ayesha: "Anjali, don't tell me what I want and what I don't want. It doesn't matter what you think. I know what I am doing is right. You don't even know what situation we got married in."
Anjali: "Whatever the reasons for your marriage were, Ayesha, I am sure that was not the reason you two remained married for so many years. If you really wanted to leave him, what was stopping you from doing it sooner. As for Neev, lets just say he is a little slow. But he too realizes that he doesn't want this divorce, then what is holding you back Ayesha. Why are you just being so stubborn."

Ayesha didn't want to continue the conversation at this point, because really she didn't have anything to say. But instead of going back to her room, she went up the terrace. She had a lot to think about and she wouldn't get any sleep if she tried. She also didn't want to have another confrontation with Neev about why she had bit him. That was a question even she needed an answer for. So she stood under the starry night thinking of the answers to the many unanswered questions.

Neev who had hoped to continue his conversation with Ayesha, had been disappointed to not find her in the room. He waited up for her as long as he could have, but fell asleep just a few minutes before she returned. She watched him sleeping and put his blanket over him and closed the window quietly and sat on her bed, still trying to rethink the decision she had made.

~~~~~~~~~ PART II: Something unexpected for Anjali ~~~~~~~~
Anjali was slightly frustrated but she refused to give up completely. She knew that Ayesha was an intelligent girl and wouldn't let her own stubbornness come in the way of making life changing decisions. The day had been taxing on Ayesha, Anjali was sure. Even though she didn't know what had happened to make Ayesha so upset, she was sure that now Ayesha was definitely rethinking the divorce. And Neev, he couldn't have been more clear in showing that he wanted this marriage to work. Yet a tiny bit of concern remained in the back of her head. Their court hearing was tomorrow. She just wished that Ayesha would change her mind tonight. Or maybe Neev could do something. She couldn't believe that she herself was getting mighty upset over these two duffers. She cared about both of them. Neev, had been an old friend, someone she grew up with. Ayesha, even though was a relatively new addition to her family, and Anjali hadn't really spent a lot of time with her, she still considered her a sibling. Especially since Anjali was well aware of the importance of having a family. She related to Ayesha on some level. Anjali had lost her family even before she could remember. Though she had almost never felt the void because of the love PL and Inder showed her, she still could relate to the Ayesha who had grown up in loneliness. Anjali understood more about Ayesha than the latter realized.
All this was running through her head as she came back into her room. Something suddenly caught her eyes. A white package laying on her table. It wasn't hers so she picked it up. It had her name and address on it. She realized that it was sent from Turkey. She got slightly excited as she opened the package that Kavya had sent. When had it come? She hadn't noticed it before. She opened and removed a CD from the package and looked at it suspiciously. The words "For my Love" were handwritten on the CD with a black marker. She quickly grabbed her laptop and inserted the CD and played it. And the next moment she stopped breathing. What the hell was this? How could he do this? She stared at the screen, first with surprised shock, and then with anger, but soon changing that to confusion. She found Kavya's number where she had scribbled it and dialed the number. He didn't pick up. Anjali hung up and called again. She must have called 5 times before giving up. She paced her room, restless, worried and intrigued at the same time. The entire night she worried about what she could do. She needed to know what Kavya was thinking sending this to her. Finally in the wee hours of the morning she called Kavya again and left a message saying that she was coming to meet him.
The next morning, as soon as PL woke up she went to her and informed PL of her journey. PL was completely shocked. What had happened to Anjali in one night. "Gudiya what happened, beta, did you not sleep last night? And where are you going? I thought you were doing some assignments in India. You were going to stay here for a while, you promised me. What happened all of a sudden beta. Why are you leaving now?"
Anjali: "Badi ma, I have to go to Turkey. Something really urgent has come up."
PL: "But Anju kal raat tak toh koi aisi baat nahi ki tumne. Phir aaj subah achanak, kya hua beta."
Anjali wished she could explain, but how could she when she herself was baffled. She sat PL down on the sofa and in a calm tone explained, "Badi ma, please don't be upset. If it wasn't so important for me to go, I wouldn't. I too wished to stay here with you Badi ma. After 2 years when I came back, I was so happy. I thought I wouldn't leave for another year. But maa, its absolutely necessary for me to go. I cannot explain more than this but that I may find my past in this journey, maa. I may find a part of my life that went missing."
PL: "Anju, gudiya, mujhe kuch nahi samajh aa raha tu kya keh rahi hai."
Anjali: "Badi ma, please aap chinta mat keejiye. Just trust me, nothing will happen to me. I'll be fine and I'll return soon. As soon as I get some answers."
PL knew there was no use of stopping Anjali. She had made up her mind even before she came to talk to PL. PL though was very worried seeing the look on Anjali's face. It was strange, she had never seen Anjali like this. Was she scared, was she happy, was she worried. Maybe a mix of it all. What had happened in one night to bring her to such a state.
After some thought PL suggested that Anjali meet Milind before she leaves. Milind had been in Turkey for so long. He would have contacts there and PL would feel much less worried if Anjali was staying someplace where she wouldn't be alone. Actually, PL was well aware of Anjali's nature of moving around and not letting her know of her whereabouts. If Anjali was staying with someone that Milind trusted, PL would be assured that she could hold someone accountable in case she couldn't get in touch with Anjali directly.
~~~~~~~~Part III - something unexpected for Milind and Prachi.

Last night

Milind had arrived late last night and found Asha tai waiting up for him. "Aap ab tak kyun jaag rahi thi tai. Maine phone kiya tha na ki main late aayonga." But Asha tai had something else to tell him. "Milind tu vishwaas nahi karega. Aaj kya hua maloom hai." Milind looked at the old woman who had an unexpressed happiness on her face. He thought it must be something good. "Kya baat hai tai."

Asha tai: "Milind aaj Sukriti khud chal ke aayi dining table tak, khaana khane."

Milind: "Kya" Milind was pleasantly surprised and he couldn't contain himself.

He grabbed Asha tai, "Usne khud khana khaya tai? Yani ki Sukriti theek ho rahi hai?"

The smile on Asha tai's face faded a little. "Nahi Milind, usne khud nahi khaya. Lekin beta, kamse kam use bhook pyaas ka ehsaas toh hai. Maine kaana uske paas rakha bhi tha lekin voh bas dekhti rahi khaane ko."

Milind's face dropped a little. How could he expect her to get better out of the blue. It would take time and patience. It would be gradual but he was sure she would one day get back to the old Sukriti.

Asha tai had more to say. "Lekin pata hai achchi baat kya hui? Jab voh khaane ke liye table par aakar baithi, toh Prachi Ritwik ko khana khila rahi thi. Aur Sukriti bade der tak un dono dekhti rahi. Phir Prachi ne ek nivaala uski taraf badaaya aur usne chup chaap voh nivaala kha liya."

Milind looked at her a bit surprised. Sukirti probably hadn't made eye contact with anyone in years. This was a definite progress and he was going to call Dr. Astha immediately. But then he realized that it was too late at night and the call would have to wait till next morning. But he sprinted up to Sukriti's room and sat besides her sleeping form on the bed. He removed a few tendrils of hair falling on her face and kissed her forehead. He caressed her head a few times reminiscing some old times when she used to be the jovial, lively, little sister that he adored. Before the tears in his eyes fell he walked out of the room closing the door quietly. He realized that Ritwik was not in Sukriti's room. He met with Asha tai outside who was about to retire to her room and asked, "Asha tai, Ritwik kahan hai?"

Asha tai: "Voh shaitaan bohot shor macha raha tha ki tumhaare kamre mein soyega. Isliye Prachi usko udhar sula rahi hai. Lekin ek baat bolun tujhe, bura mat manna. Yeh Prachi ne buri aadat daal di hai usme. Prachi ke bina sota hi nahi hai voh. Todni padegi yeh aadat." With that she walked back to her room supporting her tired joints.

Milind walked towards his room and opened the door quietly. As expected, Ritwik was sleeping soundly in Prachi's arms. But Prachi too had fallen asleep next to Ritwik on the bed. Milind's heart was too full of gratitude today. He didn't have the heart to wake either of them. He was going to get comfortable on the couch but realized soon enough that he was too big for the petite furniture. He eyed the wide open space on the bed next to Ritwik and then looked at Prachi sleeping next to him. If he slept anywhere else, Asha tai would find out in the morning and he didn't want that. So he hesitantly went over to the bed and lied down making sure not to stir either of them.

~~~~~~~~~~
Earlier this morning
Prachi had awoken and to her surprise found herself on Milind's bed. She got up quietly not stirring Ritwik who was sleeping on her arms nor Milind who was looking equally innocent. While Prachi was in the bathroom, little Ritwik woke up and lay in bed a bit confused about where he was. He saw Milind sleeping soundly next to him and with an evil glint in his eyes, he got up and hoisted himself up on Milind's belly. He sat on his uncle with both his legs on either side of Milind and he lightly pulled on Milind's beard. Milind didn't move and Ritwik giggled in glee. Then he pulled harder and Milind contorted his face in pain. He opened his eyes slowly and saw the blurred image of a smiling Ritwik sitting on top of him. Ritwik who didn't notice that Milind was awake, went near the beard again and this time, Milind grabbed his little hands and the boy yelped in terror and excitement as Milind sat up and took him in his arms. "Mujh se panga???" Milind said as he brought his face near Ritwik's and rubbed his facial hair on the boy. Ritiwik laughed and wiggled from the tickle. Both of them tossed around on the bed making a complete mess of the sheets. Ritwik was having way too much fun trying again and again to pull Milind's beard and Milind was having too much fun playing like this with Ritwik for the first time.
Prachi had heard the ruckus while brushing her teeth and came out, very curious to see what was going on. She just laughed at the two of them when she saw them both on all fours on the bed pretending to be tigers. Milind quickly grabbed Ritwik when he was distracted by Prachi and started to tickle him again. Ritwik yelled out to Prachi, "Mummy bachao" as he laughed and tried to stop Milind. "Achcha Mummy bachao…abe teri mummy kya bachaygi tujhe…subah subh mujhse panga lega toh yehi hoga", Milind was grinning ear to ear. Prachi came closer to the bed and Ritwik tried to free himself and held his hands up to Prachi but Milind held him back with one hand on his t-shirt. Prachi made a motion to pick him up but Milind quickly pulled him back, holding him from the waist. "Mummy ke bachche…bol na, ab bol na mummy ko bachane ko." Prachi too got on the bed on her knees and tried to join in the game. She freed Ritwik from Milind and the boy jumped on her back and stuck his tongue out at his uncle. Milind tried to grab Ritwik but Prachi held him behind her. With a naughty glint in his eyes, Milind pushed Prachi out of the way on the bed and grabbed a screaming Ritwick and pinned his back to Prachi and continued to tickle him even as Prachi tried to get up with Ritwik. In all the fun, Milind accidentally grabbed Prachi from the back by her waist and she rolled up on him with Ritwik on top of her and she fell onto his other side with her head on his arms. Milind didn't seem to notice at first but Prachi was well aware of the fact that she could feel his racing heart on her back. She took a quick glance at Milind who was too busy kissing Ritwik who was still in Prachi's hands to notice that Prachi was actually between them. As she watched Milind kiss the boy, she wished, for a fraction of a second, that this were the reality of her life.
But that moment of joy was short lived as Milind noticed her and the smile on his face vanished. He got up almost throwing Prachi and Ritwik off of him. And without looking at her he said, "Sorry", and her heart broke into pieces. But she didn't let it show on her face. Still sitting on the bed with his back to her he continued, "Errm…I wanted to thankyou".
Prachi: "for what?"
Milind: "for what you are doing with Sukriti. Asha tai told me that you are helping her and you even let Ritwik stay in her room."
Prachi: "I told you before Milind that I want Sukriti to get better. You don't have to thank me for anything. Sukriti deserves to live a normal life. That is the least I can do."
Milind was already headed towards the bathroom and Prachi took Ritwik off the bed and made the bed again. Then she sat on the bed and sighed as she wished she could have stayed in his arms just a few seconds longer. She didn't know how much longer she would remain Milind's wife. Sukriti had already started to show signs of improvement and Ritwik also was getting used to Milind and Sukriti, though he didn't like Asha tai too much. Asha tai was too strict with him. No matter how long she remained Mrs. Prachi Milind Mishra, she would live the rest of her life holding onto these few unexpected moments of joy that someone up there was kind enough to gift her. But her greedy heart only wished for a few more of such moments with Milind.
Milind was cursing himself for being so free around Prachi. When had it become so easy for him to play around with her. What must she be thinking about him now. Wasn't he the one to put the condition that they wouldn't have any such relationship. And he was the one breeching that too. How many times have you violated her Milind, he admonished himself. Does it matter that it was accidental. She must not think so. And it mattered what she thought about him. He didn't want her thinking of him as a lowly character. He would apologize, he thought, if only he could meet her eyes.
Next chapter: PL and Anjali visit Michi. I was going to include that part with this one but it would have gotten too long. I wrote the chapter last night...way tooo late. But didn't post because i wanted to make sure there are no mistakes. Hope you like this part.😃
