Chapter 54

Prachi sat looking at her reflection in the mirror and absently brushing her hair. She was getting ready for the party and her mind raced through the events of the day. It seemed it had passed by in a flash.

They had all woken up pretty late after the festivities of the previous night. After a very very late brunch Geet announced that she wanted to go to the temple.She wasn't particularly religious but she reasoned that atleast on her birthday she should pay God a visit. Everyone else had deicided to join her and set off. The hotel staff had given them directions to the nearest temple and Milind thinking that they seemed pretty simple had decided to drive himself.

While praying at the temple Geet joked that she was asking God to get her back to the resort safely. Milind countered by saying that at least he didn't drive like he was part of the Formula one circuit and they all laughed. Geet had noticed although there wasn't any open hostility between Milind and Prachi there still was a lot of tension. They of course smiled and were very polite to each other. A little too polite. But Geet guessed it was only because they both wanted to see her happy. She silently thanked God for such great friends, and tried to fight back the pangs of guilt in her heart. She prayed for more patience for herself and happiness for all her friends.

After they arrived back at the resort they had all retired to their respective rooms for some rest before meeting up again coffee and snacks. Geet was of course ambushed by a blitzkrieg of phone calls and text messages the entire day from people wishing her a happy birthday. Her parents called late in the afternoon from Italy, her brother from New York but Prachi saw that Geet kept looking at her phone with anticipation. "Geet hun you okay?"

"Yeah Prachi just fine. So you want to go for a walk on the beach before the party?"

"Yeah sure Geet. But tell me why exactly do you keep looking at your phone?" Prachi asked with a small smile.

"Ah.. nothing nothing. Lets go for that walk now. I'll go get Mru." Geet rushed off to get Mru.

The three of them went for a walk on the beach and saw the tents and tables being set up for the party later that night. They sat on the sand and talked about everything. But Prachi noticed Geet was still glancing at the display of her phone. Prachi reached over and grabbed the phone. Geet tried to get it back but Prachi held it away.

"Geet honestly. Tell me. Why do you keep looking at the phone? You waiting for someone to call? I know Aunty, Uncle and Siddharth bhaiyya called. And I know all your friends, well the ones who aren't already here, have called and wished you. So who are you expecting a call from?"

"No one." Geet's eyes never left the sand.

"Geet. Be honest." Prachi knew Geet was holding something back.

"Ok ok. Rishis hasn't called yet." Geet eyes still refused to make contact with her friends'.

"Oh my God! Your romeo hasn't called yet." Mru tried to control her urge to laugh. But it was a losing battle.

"No he hasn't called. And I have no idea why. I mean he called earlier in the week and was all like he misses me and remembers my birthday, then why didn't he call me today? He didn't even leave me a text message." Geet seemed a little anxious.

"Geet forget it. If he didn't call than he must definitely an inconsiderate jerk. So forget him and enjoy your birthday." Prachi didn't want Geet to be upset because of some guy.

"Yeah I know I should but somehow it seems to matter. But you guys are right. Forget Rishi. Lets have fun. We should get back and start to get ready. And yes Prachi I know I promised I'd let you doll me up so let the torture begin." Geet grinned and got up. She dusted the sand of her clothes and extended her hand to Prachi.

Prachi came back to the present. She had decided to get dressed before helping Geet. She had decided to wear her brown skirt that fell a couple inches below her knees and had paired it with a cream colored peasant top. Her long straight hair hung loose around her shoulders and she prayed that the humidity would stay low in the night. For accessories she chose her plain gold hoop earrings and a simple gold bracelet. They had all decided to go barefoot to the beach so there was no need to chose any shoes.

She deemed herself good enough for the party and decided to go help Geet. She was thankful that Geet had gotten dressed so she only needed help for make-up, hair and accessories. Geet of course made a face and asked whether she really needed to get dolled up. Prachi nodded to the affirmative and got down to business. She had already thought of the look she was going for. Light breezy and beautiful. She brushed Geet's straight hair out, pinning only a little part on the top with some tendrils framing her face. Then she went about applying the make up. Geet didn't need much. She had flawless skin and big eyes. Prachi just put a minimal amount but Geet of course was grouching all the time about how 'frilly-girly' she was going to look by the time Prachi was done. But Prachi told her to keep quite and still and just wait. She saw the earrings that Neev had given Geet lying on the dresser. She told Geet to put them on and declared Geet ready. Geet looked at herself in the mirror ad started giggling. Prachi was first apprehensive thinking that Geet might not like the look but Geet just laughed and said "Prachi nobody will recognize me. I look totally girly. And very pretty. Thank you Prachi." Geet smiled up at Prachi and gave her hug.

They both went to the other room to check on Mru. They found just putting the finishing touches on her outfit. She was wearing a pair of denim capri pants and a little blue kurta. She tied her hair up in a high ponytail and was ready to leave. Any request by Prachi to help get her a little more dolled up was firmly refused. She claimed it was Geet's night so Geet was the only one who needed any 'dolling up'. Prachi laughed and accepted it.

The three of them grabbed their purses and left the cottage in the direction of the beach.

Milind saw the girls approach and was about to alert Neev. But as they got closer he was stunned by Geet's make over. His usually tomboyish and bratty best friend looked completely transformed.

"Oh my God! What the heck happened to Geet? She looks gorgeous!" Neev was apparently also taken by surprise.

"I have no idea. But she does look good doesn't she?" Milind grinned.

Milind walked up and met the girls half way. He pretended to look around as if searching for something or someone, "Mru where is Geet? Is she running late or something?" He extended his hand towards Geet and teased "And you never told me you have a gorgeous friend flying in? Introduce me na."

Geet just swatted his hand away. "You don't think I look funny or weird do you?"

"No Jaan I think you look beautiful." He smiled sincerely at her and kissed her forehead.

"Geet if I had known you cleaned up this nice I would have.. well..ah.. now its too late." Neev flashed her a cheeky grin.

"See Jaan. You seemed to have even cast a spell over Neev here." Milind placed his hands on Geet's shoulders and led her to the party area.

"Well you know all this.." Geet pointed to herself, making invisible cirles in the air, " is because of Prachi. She is solely responsible."

"Well Prachi you did a very good job." Milind gave Prachi a little smile and she felt like she was walking on air.

"By the way Prachi and Mrudula you both look absolutely stunning as well." Neev seemed to be at his flirtatious best.

The girls thanked him and they followed Milind and Geet. Milind had also noticed Prachi looking beautiful in her simplicity. But he hadn't said anything to her. He would have loved to tell her that she had absolutely taken his breath away but he held his tongue.

The beach looked beautiful. The tents had been set up and torches and lamps lit the way and the parameter. The buffet table was placed on a side and there was even a temporary wooden dance floor set up with a table for the DJ. Prachi glanced around and she noticed the speakers placed at strategic positions well camouflaged by the decorations.

A few members of the staff whom Geet had befriended were also there. Alveera rushed over and gave Geet a hug. "Happy birthday Geet." She gestured to the rest of the staff to join them. They came with a huge gift in hand. "We all chipped in and bought you something." Geet ripped open the wrapping paper and found an angelic doll inside. Geet squealed and hugged Alveera. "Oh thank you guys! I love her. Thank you."

Prachi looked at all the people around Geet. She seemed absolutely ecstatic. But Prachi knew that one thing was still missing. Geet's Adonis hadn't still called or messaged. She wished he had. Geet's day would really have been perfect then. But then she realized that any guy who couldn't spare a minute to wish Geet on her birthday was definitely not worth her friend.

"Ms.Geet there is also a very special gift waiting for you the front desk." One of the employees informed her with a polite smile.

"Vic you bought me another gift? What is it? A car?" Geet rushed off without waiting for his answer. Mru and Prachi exchanged excited glances and followed her.

Geet ran, almost tripping many times over her skirt, to the front desk. She looked around excitedly for something big and bright. She almost missed the small petite box sitting on the counter. She picked it up and looked at it closely. She looked at Mru and Prachi questioningly and they shrugged their shoulders.

Unlike with her other presents something compelled her to open the box delicately. She even folded up the wrapping paper when she done. She opened the small box and gasped. Inside was a thin gold chain with small gold 'G' gold pendent cradled on a velvet cushion.

"Oh my god you guys. Its beautiful. Did you guys help him choose it?" Geet seemed to be mesmerized by the pendent.

"Well no one helped me but I'm glad you liked it." A deep voice reverberated behind her.
