Chapter 1
<!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->
Prachi waited impatiently, drumming her fingers rhythmically on the table. The Mud Hut was filled with people of all ages. Teenagers to senior citizens, all getting their caffeine fix. She looked at her watch for what seemed like the millionth time and thought to herself "20 minutes late." She was waiting for her two best friends Mrudula and Geet. Mrudula could be counted on to be late but Geet was more punctual than a clock. It was that fact that had Prachi a little worried. As irritated as she was by the two of them being late a little anxiety was creeping in.
<!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->
She was just about to call them when the bell over the door rang, and Geet's laughter wafted in. Prachi couldn't help but smile. Geet's laughter always had that effect. But she quickly wiped it off and pretended to look annoyed. As soon as Geet saw her she screamed "Prachi!" effectively turning every head in the coffee shop in her direction. She ran to Prachi's table and gathered her a huge bear hug. Prachi who had already turned a little red when her name had been announced was now scarlet, and having a very hard time keeping that annoyed look on her face.
<!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->
"Oh come on Prachi! Wipe that look of your face. It wasn't very convincing back in school and it isn't convincing now" Geet teased. Prachi laughed and returned the hug.
<!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->
Prachi saw Mrudula, grinning from ear to ear, standing at the counter placing their orders. Mru would always ordered for them and they always loved what ever they got.
<!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->
They had met when they were in high school and were as different as you can get. Prachi was the quite one and people always mistook her calm for shyness. They never saw her confidence or strength. They just assumed she was a timid creature that needed saving. Geet was one of the many that made that mistake. She had tried to defend Prachi from a bunch of bullies back at school. Unfortunately for her not only had Prachi dealt with the bullies in her own way, she had also told Geet that she didn't need any help. Far from being offended Geet had admired Prachi's honesty and they had become friends. So close in fact that it was Prachi who encouraged Geet to pursue medicine. Geet was confident, exuberant, a bibliomaniac and had a laugh that could make even a stone smile. Mrudula had been a witness to the bullying incident and had walked over to Geet and Prachi and introduced herself. Mrudula was a perfect foil for Geet's exuberance and Prachi's calm. She was also the biggest music freak on the face of the planet, always quoting songs that no other human had probably heard. People who knew them never understood how three people so different could be so close. But they were.
<!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->
After school they had chosen different paths. Geet was graduating from medical school, (complaining all the while that her course took twice as long to complete as the other two) while Mrudula was an engineer working for one of the top software companies (complaining that her boss was the devil incarnate). Prachi had finished business school and had started working for her father but after his passing she had to step up and run the company. Things weren't going to well but she really believed given time and effort that it all could be turned around.
<!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->
"Prachi.. Hello earth calling Prachi.." Mrudula's voice bought Prachi back to the present.
<!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->
"Yeah, I'm sorry guys. Spaced out for a moment." Prachi said apologetically. And sipped her latte.
<!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->
" Don't you want to know why we were late?" Geet asked excitedly. She was acting like a little kid on her birthday. "Ok what is it? Why are the two of you late?" Prachi asked.
<!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->
Instead of giving her a straight reply Geet took out an envelope and slid it across the table. Prachi raised her eyebrows and shot a look at Mru. Mru gave a slight nod and Prachi ripped the envelope open. The word "Tickets" were emblazoned on another envelope inside. But before she could figure out what or where the tickets were for Geet unable to contain herself blurted out, " I got front row seats to Maroon 5".
"What?! Are you serious!"" Prachi said a little unbelievingly.
<!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->
"Prachi, look at me. Listen to what I'm saying very carefully. We are going to see Maroon 5." And after that they started screaming and hugging like teenagers attracting more attention to themselves.
<!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->
It was that very moment that a cell phone rang and they all reached into their bags. It turned out to be Prachi's phone and she quickly answered. "Yes this is Prachi Shah.. What.. ok hold on.. I'm coming over.."
<!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->
She looked over at Geet and Mru and told them she had to leave.. Somehow her company had been taken over overnight and no one had been the wiser.
<!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->
When her friends heard they insisted on tagging along. Through out the ride to Prachi's office they kept trying to reassure her that it was all a big mistake but in her heart she knew that something had gone wrong.
<!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->
The past year hadn't been the best of her life. In fact it could have been classified as the worst. She had lost her father to a freak accident, she found out that her father had a daughter with another woman effectively giving her a sister, and the company had been losing money for a number of years. If it hadn't been for the two women in the car she would have shattered but her friends had held her together.
<!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->
Now Geet was racing through the city, driving like a maniac. Mrudula was calling her secretary and canceling her meetings for the rest of the day. Whenever the world seemed to knock her down Geet and Mru helped her back up. Just the thought gave Prachi some hope.
