A Win in Nach Baliye can do wonders. In the near future, B-grade Hindi movies might find an exciting 'item boy' in Abhishek Awasthi who will bask in borrowed glory, that of his more popular girlfriend Rakhi Sawant. Awasthi and Sawant are one of the two 'fortunate' couples who have ended up in the finals of Nach Baliye 3 that will be held tonight on Star One. The other finalist pair, annoyingly called jodi, Aamir Ali and Sanjeeda Sheikh, too will have their share of stardom, if they manage to walk away with the trophy. They will be greeted by shutterbugs at page-three parties and premieres. Quite unlike a few weeks ago, when I bumped into them at a Hindi film premiere at Juhu's PVR Cinemas and there weren't many takers for their bytes. Apart from offers of anchoring and live dance shows, Sheikh, currently seen as a vamp in Balaji Telefilms' Kayamath, may even get a new lease of life in the show. Ali, who had acted in a film a few years back, may even revive his Bollywood career after being spotted by producers. Over the last few years, celebrity dance shows (Nach Baliye and Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa) and reality shows (Bigg Boss) have made names out of forgotten faces. A post Jassi jobless Mona Singh is now a successful anchor after winning Sony's Jhalak. Page-three professional Pooja Bedi has hiked her fee for hosting shows after just appearing in Jhalak and Nach Baliye. But the glory of our winners and prominent participants is too short-lived; in fact they don't have much to take home from the contests apart from some quick bucks and 15 minutes under the sun. (Though Prachi Desai was recently handpicked for Farhan Akhtar-produced Rock On after being spotted on Jhalak, she should keep her fingers crossed, since many of Akhtar's projects have been shelved lately.) Their achievement appears even more insignificant, when compared to the rediscovered stardom of Celebrity Bigg Brother's glorified winner, Shilpa Shetty. Even months after her win and long after her honeymoon with the British tabs is over, Shetty is still reaping the benefits from a touring musical and Hollywood promises. That Shetty, a fading Bollywood heroine, has suddenly turned an international icon is not just because Bigg Brother is a UK based show. It's the dramatic nature of her win—co-participant Jade Goody's thoughtless comments and the ensuing sympathy of Brit Asians—that did it all. All that celebrities of Indian dance and reality shows can do now for long-lasting stardom is to pray for some controversy of sorts-Sawant's dramatics (fake tears for mother et al) have become too stale to be sustained longer in public memory. Channels may even consider a slightly different profile of participants other than just forgotten models and ageing hockey players.

There are so many reality shows/ talent hunts on air currently (including 9X's Mission Ustaad), I fail to understand the fuss about winning one. Especially since Sandhya Mridul, who just lost the Jhalak Dikhhala Jaa crown last week, has proved: Losers have more fun.
