Big B to act for free

Deepak Sawant first worked as Bachchan's make-up man for
Raastein Ke Patthar and Zanjeer. Big B will play the hero's father in Sawant's Bhojpuri movie

If you haven't noticed that Amitabh Bachchan is 63 years old, it's because of Deepak Sawant. Sawant has been Bachchan's make-up man for the past 32 years. Now, to show his gratitude, Bachchan has agreed to act in his movie for free.

Savant is producing a Bhojpuri movie, Ganga, in which Amitabh will play the hero's father. "Yeh toh unka badappan hain. God is great. I can't believe that both Amitji and Hemaji are acting in a movie I am producing," said Sawant.

How it happened

Sawant said, "In January, Amitji and I were chatting, when I told him about my plans to make a Bhojpuri movie. Amitji laughed and said, 'Kya Deepak dada aap kuch bhi karte rehte ho'."

"Then in August, on the sets of Bulbul at Film City, B R Chopra, Ravi Chopra, Amitji, Hema Malini and others were discussing the success of Bhojpuri movies. I reminded Amitji that I too was making a Bhojpuri movie — and that he would be acting in it. Amitji joked, 'Kaha phasa rahein ho?' but agreed to act in the movie provided I didn't pay him," Sawant said.

Deepak asked Hema Malini too to act in his film. She agreed as well.

Met in 1972

Sawant first worked as Bachchan's make-up man in 1972 — for Raastein Ke Patthar and Zanjeer.

Soon after, he became his personal make-up artiste. From 1981 to 1987 he worked for Smita Patil and Chunkey Pandey, but Bachchan called him back when he was shooting for Jadugar. The two have been together ever since.

"I have learned one thing from Amitji — to keep yourself busy and never sit idle. By making this film I am trying to use my spare time constructively," said Sawant.

Story of Ganga

The movie is about a village girl who fights against a thakur's son who has just come home from abroad.

Bachchan will play the thakur and Hema Malini his wife. The movie also stars Ravi Kishen and Nagma.
