Chapter 10 - Saath saath
"Kya baat hain, Kasturi?"
"Kuch nahi, sir"
"Nahi, zaroor koi baat hain"
Kasturi frowned. What could she say? That his mother had offered her money to leave him forever? Or that she was a married woman, a runaway, a wrongdoer - who didn't have permission to recklessly fall head-over-heels in love.
She attempted a weak smile and diverted the topic. "Dekho, Robbie sir, ice sream. Chaliye, ice cream khaalete." She was relieved when his face lit up.
"Robbie sir," she giggled, "aap bilkool bacchhe ki tare lagrahe."
"Jee Kasturi, mujhe ice cream bahut pasand hain"
"Acchha, kaun si flavour?"
"Sab!" He grinned. "Magar aaj...mujhe chocolate chahiye. Aur tum…nahi, nahi, ek minute, mein guess karoonga. Hmmm…strawberry?"
"Jee, Robbie sir." Kasturi smiled, surprised. "Bhaiyya, ek strawberry dedo, aur ek chocolate. Shukriya. Kitne hain?"
"Rehne do, Kasturi, mein doonga"
"Chinta kyun kar rahe ho, mein doonghi."
"Nahi."
"Mera treat hain…"
"Saab, mehmsaab, meri baat maan lo. Bahut saare log intezaar kar rahe hain. Aap dono aada deh dijye. Satar rupaiya."
They both chuckled. "Dekho Kasturi, tum kitni paagal ho. Yahaan behas kar ke, sab ki time barbaad kar rahi ho..."
"Main?" Kasturi squeaked indignantly. "Aap ne shuru kiya, main bas…" She stopped as she saw the teasing grin on his face. She punched his arm.
"Aaah, Kasturi, bahut dard ho raha hain," Robbie screamed.
"Sach mein, sorry, Robbie sir. Main…aap mazaak kar rahe hain, na?" She crossed her arms and pretended to sulk.
He turned her towards him and stroked her hair. "Tum kaise mujhe dard doonghi, Kasturi? Tum to meri zindagi ho. Mein hamesha tere saath rehna chahta hoon. Hamesha."

"Mujhe ghar se guitar lehna hain, phir hum seedhe venue jaayenge. Theek hain?"
"Jee, Robbie sir"
Robbie zoomed up the drive, and turned down the engine. He helped Kasturi off and they walked inside.
"Baitho Kasturi, mein do minute mein vaapas aaonga."
Robbie hurried upstairs, while Kasturi waited in the lounge. A list of names on the coffee table caught her eye. Absently, she scanned the page, noticing with a queasy feeling that it was the list of invitees for Robbie's birthday celebration. Her deadline was only 7 days away. Uneasy, she decided to put it down when a name caught her eye. Raunak Singhania.Chapter 10 - Saath saath (english)
"What's wrong, Kasturi?"
"Nothing, sir"
"No, there's definitely something"
Kasturi frowned. What could she say? That his mother had offered her money to leave him forever? Or that she was a married woman, a runaway, a wrongdoer - who didn't have permission to recklessly fall head-over-heels in love.
She attempted a weak smile and diverted the topic. "Look, Robbie sir, ice cream. Come, let's eat ice cream." She was relieved when his face lit up.
"Robbie sir," she giggled, "you look totally like a child."
"Yes Kasturi, because I like ice cream a lot"
"OK, which flavour?"
"All!" He grinned. "But today, I want…chocolate. And you…no, no, wait…I'll guess. Hmmm … strawberry?"
"Yes, Robbie sir." Kasturi smiled, surprised. "Give us one strawberry, and one chocolate. Thanks. How much?"
"Leave it, Kasturi, I'll give it"
"Why do you bother, I'll give it"
"No."
"My treat…"
"Sir, madam, listen to me. Many people are waiting. Both of you give half. Seventeen rupees each."
They both chuckled. "Look Kasturi, you're so mad. Arguing here, you're wasting everyone's time..."
"Me?" Kasturi squeaked indignantly. "You started, I just…" She stopped as she saw the teasing grin on his face. She punched his arm.
"Aaah, Kasturi, it's hurting a lot!" Robbie screamed.
"Really, sorry, Robbie sir. I…you're joking, aren't you?" She crossed her arms and pretended to sulk.
He turned her towards him and stroked her hair. "How can you hurt me, Kasturi? You're my life. I want to always be with you. Forever."

"I have to get my guitar from home, then we'll go straight to the venue. OK?"
"Yes, Robbie sir"
Robbie zoomed up the drive, and turned down the engine. He helped Kasturi off and they walked inside.
"Sit Kasturi, I'll be back in 2 minutes."
Robbie hurried upstairs, while Kasturi waited in the lounge. A list of names on the table caught her eye. Raunak Singhania. His name flashed out at her. The memory washed over her again.

He struck her left cheek and she stumbled over the table. He advanced on her again, knocking her to the floor. She struggled as his fists battered her face repeatedly. She wrenched one arm free and reached behind her. Her fingers closed on something smooth and cold. Instinctively, she grabbed the bottle, swung it over her head, and aimed at his arm. He hesitated, long enough for her to rise. His eyes were wide with fury; she backed away from him. He raised his arm once more, and, almost mechanically, she slammed the bottle into his head. Instantly, his body crumpled and he fell to the floor. She froze.
She stood there, her heart pounded wildly in her chest, working up the courage to move. Her fingers trembled violently as she reached towards his neck. His eyes bore into her, enraged though still. She felt a faint pulse and snatched her hand away, terrified he would awake any moment. In a second, her decision was made. Slowly, she tiptoed out of the room, then rushed to her cupboard. She pulled a kitbag out and threw clothes messily into it; she knocked jars and bottles off her table and stuffed them in. She searched wildly for her hidden pile of money, she stowed the thousand rupees she had managed to save into her bag with relief. Panting in fear, she lurched down the stairs and out of the door. She continued to run, dragging her belongings until she was too tired to continue. She collapsed against a wall as her breathing and pulse slowly returned to normal. Her eyes closed.
"Mein…" Kasturi trailed off as Devika swept out of the room. Her stomach flipped inside her as she remembered the ultimatum she had been given. She couldn't go back to Raunak – she couldn't. But what other option did she have? Leave Robbie? Or risk him finding out the truth and leaving her? She couldn't bear to be heartbroken a second time. Her trust had already been betrayed. How could she deceive the man she loved?
"Chalo, Kasturi," called Robbie from outside. She plastered a cheerful expression on her face and climbed onto the motorbike.
The ride passed in silence, each occupied in their own thoughts. Kasturi was agonizing over her predicament, while Robbie was considering her quiet behavior. Neither of them noticed the man following on his own motorcycle, a malevolent sneer upon his face.
