Chapter 22 ? Chala Pawaade Mahi

"Namaste, Robbie sir. Kya dekhna chahte ho?"

"Ring, mere honewali patni ke liye."

"Oh, badhaai ho. Usse kaisi angoothi pasand aayegi?"

"Mujhe white gold ki angoothi chahiye, diamond ki."

"Yeh?"

"Nahi. Kuch bhara nahi. Kasturi ko simple cheez pasand hain. Aur diamond "emerald" cut hona chahiye."

"Yeh? Ya yeh?" Robbie's eyes sparkled. The second one was perfect. The diamond, rectangular and dazzling, was nestled between two intertwining strands of white gold.

"Jee haan, yeh. Yeh bilkool sahi hain. Mujhe yehi chahiye. Kitne ka hain?"

"10, 000 rupaiya."

"Theek hain." He tore off a cheque and signed it as the shopkeeper packaged his purchase.

"Arre yaar itna bhi mat muskurao. Aaj toh bas engagement hain, shaadi toh nahi, na?"

"Arre Milind kyun tang kar rahe ho, bichare ko?" admonished Meher in mock reproach.

"OK, OK sorry Meher. Par tum yahaan kar rahi ho? Kasturi ko nahi tayaar karna?"

"Haan, haan, jaati hoon. Bas chooriyaan lehne aayi hoon. Devika aunty ne galati se Robbie ke capre ke saath rakdiya. By the way, Robbie jeeju, aap toh bahut acchhe lagrahe ho. Laal sherwaani, waah, Kasturi toh dekhti rehjaayengi."

"Nahi toh, hamara Robbie toh usse dekhte rehjaayenga."

"Lagta hai dono ek doosre ko dekh dekh kar khoye rahenge," she predicted, finally finding the bangles and hurrying out of the room.

"Hai Kasturi tum kitni pyaari lagrahi ho," marvelled Prachi. Kasturi shyly looked up into the mirror. Her hair was coiled into a bun, over which her cherry-red net dupatta had been artistically draped. The blouse was made of crimson silk, embroidered with gold thread in curlicues and swirls, dotted with glass beads, the sleeves reaching to just below the shoulder. The skirt was of the same design, slashed down the middle to reveal the gilt underskirt.

"Kisi ki nazar na lage," hoped Meher, dabbing eyeliner from her eye onto the corner of Kasturi's.

"Ab dono ek doosre ko angoothi pehnaade." Kasturi shyly slipped the ring onto Robbie's third finger, then stretched out her left hand so Robbie could do the same.

"Yay!!! Badhaai ho badhaai Robbie aur Kasturi. Ab hum sab dost tum dono ke liye surprise rakha hain. Music?" announced Preet.

The introduction of "sajan tumse pyaar" began to play. Gauri stepped into the centre of the room and began to sing and dance.

"Ring, for my wife-to-be."

"Oh, congratulations. What kind of ring would she like?"

"I would like a white gold diamond ring."

"This one?"

"No. Nothing huge. Kasturi likes simple things. And the diamond should be an "emerald" cut."

"This? Or this?" Robbie's eyes sparkled. The second one was perfect. The diamond, rectangular and dazzling, was nestled between two intertwining strands of white gold.

"Yes, this one. It's completely right. I want this one. How much is it?"

"Yes, ok, I'm going. I just came to get the bangles. Devika aunty left them with Robbie's clothes by mistake. By the way, Robbie jeeju, you're looking very nice. Red sherwani, waah, Kasturi will be left staring."

"But no, it will be our Robbie left staring at her."

"It seems that they'll both be lost watching each other," Meher predicted, finally finding the bangles and hurrying out of the room.
