Part 1
There was pin drop silence in the courtroom as the judge was about to give the verdict of Veenaâs case. The entire Sharma family had tears in their eyes as they had lost all hopes of saving her. Prerna closed her eyes tightly and sent a silent prayer to her lord asking him to help her.
âExcuse me, Your Honor..â
Prerna opened her eyes as soon as the voice reached her ears. She recognised it in an instant and at once turned to the entrance where her husband stood. He looked weak and tried, yet he tried to walk with the support of the benches. Though a ward boy was by Rishabhâs side he had refused taking any help and managed to walk to the witness box. Prerna recalled Maasiâs words and got anxious. Was Rishabh here to make sure that her mother gets the most severe punishment? She gulped in fear and stared at Rishabh.
âBefore you give your verdict on this case. I would request you to hear me once. My name is Rishabh Bajaj. Aur yeh case mujh par hue attack ko leke hai, but your honor, this was not an attack. Yeh sirf ek accident tha jis main kisi ki koi fault nahi hai. The rope which held the chandelier broke and that is how I got injuredâ
Rishabh paused to look at Veena who stood at her spot blankly staring at him and trying to register his words. Though he was having difficulty to even stand straight Rishabh took a deep breath and continued
âMrs Veena Sharma meri mother-in-law hai. Yeh sach hai ki vo mujhse naraz hai but she has a valid reason for that. Unhe mujhse problem iss liye hai kyunki maine bina unse puche ya unhe bataye unki beti se shadi ki hai. My wife and I had our reasons to get married secretly but Mrs Sharma ne abhi tak mujhe puri tarah se maaf nahi kiya hai, vo hamari beti ke birthday party main sirf iss liye aai thi because shayad vo hamare rishte ko accept karne lagi thi. She had come to mend our relationships and not stain them further.â
He turned to look at the judge, and quickly concluded his statement by asking the judge to drop all the charges against Veena as she was not responsible for his current state. Before Prerna could absorb Rishabhâs words and get herself to believe that he had given a statement in her motherâs favor, the judge gave his verdict
âAs per Mr Rishabh Bajajâs statement, the court has come to a conclusion; that Mrs Veena Sharma did not try to cause any harm to him and this was just an accident. Hence the court hereby declares her not guilty for attempt to murderâ
As the judge adjourned the court and everyone started to leave, Prerna and her siblings ran to Veena. Prerna hugged her mother tightly and cried in relief. The rest of her family hugged Veena one by one. A slight sound distracted Prerna and she turned into the direction where she saw Rishabh struggling to stand straight with support of one of the chairs. She immediately rushed to him and caught him by his arm to support him but Rishabh jerked her hand.
âItâs okay. I will manageâ
He said arrogantly and took another step only to stumble on his feet but Prerna grabbed his arm in time to stop him from falling forward.
âI can seeâ
She said sarcastically and earned a glare from Rishabh. She couldnât believe this man, he was unable to stand properly on his own feet and yet he was shooting glares at her. Rishabh tried to jerk her hand once again but Prerna tightened her grip on him. He tried one last time and then gave up, by the look on Prernaâs face he knew that she wouldnât let go off him.
âI want to speak with your mother, for a minute..â
Rishabh said in a low voice, Prerna was a little confused by his demand but just nodded in response and took him towards her family.
âMrs Sharma..â
They all turned to look at Rishabh who tried to stand straight with Prernaâs support. He lifted his hand and joined them in front of Veena, before he spoke
âI .. I am sorry. Aapko jo bhi.. Takleef hui⊠mere wajah seâŠâ
Veena who was already feeling grateful to Rishabh for saying all those things and giving a statement in her favor. She was both humbled and guilty seeing him asking for forgiveness from her when she should be one the apologizing. She quickly walked to Rishabh and caught his hands in her, she lowered them and shook her head negatively
âMafi toh hume mangni chahiye. Aapke saath humne itna bura bartav kiya, itna galat samjha aapko uske baad bhi aapne aaj itni madat ki..â
âAap badi hain⊠maafi mat mangiye pleaseâŠâ
Rishabh managed to say weakly, he could feel that his body could give up any minute. He didnât have the strength to even stand with Prernaâs support now, in fact she was too weak to hold his weight in the first place. Veena gave him a small smile and patted him on his shoulder slightly. Prerna was happy that her mother was grateful to Rishabh and was expressing it as well. She felt Rishabh lean against her and looked at him, she saw his eyes drooping slowly. She managed to turn him in her hold so that he was completely facing her, she held him with one hand and raised the other one to cup his face but the next second she felt his body crash into hers as he fainted in her arms. By some miracle Prerna had managed to not fall on the ground with Rishabhâs body completely against hers. Her hands automatically wrapped around Rishabhâs waist as she held him upright and her mind froze for a minute.
âRishabhâ
Prerna was so panicked that she ended up screaming Rishabhâs name, grabbing everyoneâs attention. Her brothers rushed to her while she patted his back trying to wake him up. The ward-boy who stood by the door got the wheelchair that he had left outside the room and with Shekarâs help he seated Rishabh on it. Prerna clasped Rishabhâs hand in hers and the ward-boy rushed to the exit. Prerna was so worried for Rishabh that she walked past Anurag without even acknowledging his presence, leaving him dumbfounded at his spot.
Anurag had reached when Rishabh fainted in Prernaâs arms but he assumed that she was hugging him, upset with the what he just saw, he moved outside the room and waited for everyone to come out. But just like Prerna, Sharmaâs were worried too and all of them failed to notice him there. He had to callout Shivaniâs name to stop her, she smiled at Anurag as he approached her
âShivani, case ka kya hua?â
âAnurag, vo Jiju ne aake aapne statement main saaf saaf keh diya ki Maa ne unpe koi attack plan nahi kiya tha, unhne Maa ko innocent prove kar diya.. I am sorry, main filhal jyada baat nahi kar sakti mujhe sabke saath jana hai..â
Shivani walked away quickly to catch up with the rest of her family and Anurag blanky followed her. He halted at the end of the stairs and witnessed how Prerna was being over concerned for Rishabh when the ward-boy was making him sit inside the car. She placed her hand on top of his head to make sure that he didnât bump it. She almost ran to the other side and got inside the car and cradled Rishabhâs head to place it in her lap as the ward-boy made him lie in back of the car. Mehra asked the Sharma family to follow in the other car as he went to sit next to the driver and asked him to rush to Basu Bari. Anurag just stood rooted to his spot once again and kept looking at both the cars till they went out of his sight.

Inside the car
âJab inki tabiyat itni kharab thi toh aap ne inhe yahan aane kaise diya Mr Mehra?â
Mehra was pleasantly surprised when Prerna started scolding him for letting Rishabh leave the hospital in such a weak condition. But he was happy to see her concern for Rishabh
âMaâam mere paas aur koi option nahi tha. Sir threatened the doctor that he would buy the hospital and the first thing he would do was remove the doctor from his job. Darr ke mare bechare doctor ne inhe jane diya aur aap toh janti hain, ek baar sir ne jo soch liya phir vo kaam karke hi mante hainâ
âAap Sir itne ziddi kyu hai?â
Prerna groaned in frustration and looked at her husband who was lying unconscious but looked like he was in a deep peaceful slumber. She shut her eyes and leaned her head against the window.
She felt like she had been on an âemotional roller-coasterâ ride in the last past hour. She had experienced several emotions; right from helplessness, to anxiety and panic in the last one hour. She was helpless when mother was almost sentenced to jail in attempt to murder her husband. And it was her husband himself who had come to their rescue which had taken her by surprise. She was anxious because as per Maasiâs words she was expecting Rishabh to make sure that Veena gets punished for her act. Instead he not only saved her mother from getting punished for a crime that she did not commit, he also ended up earning the respect of her entire family. She was shocked to see him accept very humbly in a room full of strangers that he was a bad son-in-law for having married her secretly and that is why Veena was mad at him. Very smoothly he had lied that Veena came to the party to mend their relationships. Despite being injured and too weak to stand on his own feet, he wanted to apologise to her mother for the unnecessary trouble that she had been through. And right now, she was worried and scared for Rishabh.
As they were about to reach Basu Bari, Prerna noticed that Rishabh had started to regain his consciousness. Rishabh groaned in pain and raised his hand to rub his forehead but stopped when he felt Prernaâs soft touch on his forehead. Wordlessly she started massaging his head, his eyes locked with Prerna for a minute before he lost his consciousness once again.
With the help of Mahesh and Shekhar, Prerna had managed to get Rishabh to their room where a doctor was already waiting with Maasi and Tanvi. After being briefed on call by the lawyers about what happened in the court, Maasi quickly put up an act on how this was just a misunderstanding and showed her concern towards Rishabh. She apologised to both Prerna and Veena as she knew that this was the best move to continue staying in Rishabhâs good books. By the time Maasiâs drama ended, the doctor was done with Rishabhâs quick check up. He assured them that Rishabh was fine and just needed proper rest to recover soon. Prerna thanked him and Mr Mehra as they took their leave, Maasi and Tanvi exited the room too.
Prerna turned to her family and thanked them too, she asked to return home as they must be feeling tired too. She promised to keep them updated about Rishabhâs health and also assured them that she would take good care of him. She hugged them one by one and escorted them till outside the room. Once they all descended the stairs she shut the door and leaned against it. She looked at her husbandâs sleeping form on the bed and let out a huge sigh as she wondered how exactly was she going to take care of her ziddi husband?
