Parallels between KZK and Devdas

I hope this post is neutral enough not to turn into a warzone.

I feel that there are many parallels between KZK and Devdas. Devdas has two childhood lovers, Dev and Paro where Dev has returned from studying abroad and Paro's life revolves around Dev. Devdas' family, especially mother, dislikes Paro and her family due to differences in their financial status and Dev gives into the pressure. Paro challenges Dev that she'll become richer than Dev and marries a rich zamindar who is a widower and has grown up children. The end result is that Devdas suffers and eventually dies in the doorstep of Paro.

Similarly, in KZK, the basic theme is Anurag and Prerna know each other from childhood but Mohini and Nivedita dislike Prerna and her family. Anurag gives in to their pressure and abandons Prerna. Prerna seeks revenge by advancing to great heights in career and marries Mr. Bajaj, whose wife left him and who has a child. Anurag suffers throughout his life and in the end dies in front of Prerna.

I feel KZK is a modern version of Devdas exploring the themes of class divide, guilt, revenge and star-crossed lovers. In fact, many Bengali novels have the same theme where ML is rich and FL comes from a middle class family. I just hope the rebooted version doesn't have as tragic storyline as Devdas and its predecessor.

No,there are 3 main differences.

1) Firstly,Prerna married Bajaj not to become rich or take revenge. Her sole reason to marry Bajaj was Anurag's safety. She felt that in those circumstances, the only way by which Anurag's going to jail can be prevented is if she gives in to Bajaj's condition of marrying him. She could find no other way to save her love and so was ready to go to any extreme lenghts in order to protect Anurag. Thus it was a huge sacrifice on her behalf which she did thinking about her love's well-being. In Devdas, Paro did not marry Bhuvan (the rich zamindar) in order to protect/save Dev. She did not have to sacrifice her love. Instead she married Bhuvan because yes you have said it right, she actually wanted to take revenge by showing to Dev's family (specially his mother) that she too has the capability to get married into a rich family and infact into a richer family than them.

2) Secondly, Anurag never ever gave in to the family pressures unlike Devdas. On the contrary, even when Prerna was married to another man(Bajaj) and his family constantly advised him to stay away from a "married woman" he never let go of her and actually re-united with his love. Also, in the very beginning itself he did not marry Komolika 1, because he gave in to his mother's and sister's rants of constantly reminding him that Prerna and he have class differences since Prerna is a "servant's daughter". Instead,he married Komolika 1 because he too like Prerna wanted to keep her safe and sound in her own house (which holds special memories for her). Another reason for him marrying Komo 1 was to protect his beloved father's business (Basu Publications). So just like Prerna he too sacrificed his love. In Devdas, Paro's marriage to Bhuvan happened just because yes you have said it right, Dev actually gave up on her by giving in to the family pressures.Dev for once never prevented Paro's marriage to Bhuvan inspite of being informed about it . He just simply let go of her. Had he prevented, the story would have been different. However, here in kzk once Anurag came to know from Ronit about Prerna's marriage to Bajaj he rushed to the venue in order to stop it. So there was no "giving in to the family pressures" on his behalf . Also, unlike Devdas, Anurag for once never stopped chasing Prerna even after her marriage as I mentioned above. And I am 100% sure, once his memory is back again no matter what the circumstances is he will not give up on her. Dev inspite of loving Paro never had the guts to go against his family, but in kzk I have noticed earlier in some scenes that when it comes to Prerna, Anurag has the guts to go against anyone in his family- be it his sister, mother or Anupam.(Remember he once went to such an extent that he pushed even his best friend Anupam just because the latter was humiliating Prerna.) I never saw this madness for Paro in Dev.

3)Thirdly,in Devdas at the end only Dev died. But Paro very well stayed alive. However in kzk, (as per the old version) both Anurag and Prerna shall die together.

So,the only similarity which I find between kzk and Devdas is the fact that yes, both of them portray class divide.

I agree on all your points. Anurag never becomes as self destructive as Devdas after Prerna's marriage though it was close. Also, there was no character like Komolika in Devdas. I was talking about thematic similarities. I think all Bengali novels written that time have similar themes be it Devdas or Parineeta. I disagree that Dev's feelings towards Paro were less strong than AnuPre. He left his house and family when he was not allowed to marry Paro. Also, it was a different time period.
