ITV serials thrives on their ability to flip characters at the drop of a hat according to the whims and fancies of the writers at any given time. Hence to pin down a character as a particular 'kind' of character it is more accurate to look at their basic traits during the initial stages of the serial or when a character is introduced to the serial as far as leads are concerned.
I am specifically talking about leads because, drama's are notorious in turning perfectly positive characters completely black when it comes for the time to advance the story in a particular way if they feel like it. But a positive lead would never be turned black unless they want to get rid of that character and bring in a new lead to carry the show forward.
Hence coming to the one year old leads and the recently introduced parallel lead of KZK2, the basic character trait of Anurage and Prerna is that they are positive, good and simple human beings. Ego and a sense of self grandiosity has never been interwoven in their character traits ever, where as Bajaj''s characters most basic trait is that of ego and self grandiosity. The audience is TOLD he is smart, by dressing him up with three piece suits, and every other character mouth the words how smart and successful he is. To this day none of his actions itself has been SHOWN to highlight this so called smartness except in turning a situation to his advantage even at the risk of destroying others, be it businesses or people's personal life like he did with prerna and Anurag... (which is why he is termed grey as per some.....As per me, when a person uses another persons weak moment be it stupidity or what ever into traping a nearly two decades younger girl into a loveless marriage to take care of your 8 to 9 year old kid without an ounce of remorse....is black ....not grey...
Grey is doing morally questionable things where the consequences of your deliberate actions harms or hurts a person though it does not amount to destroying a persons life... but still have the ability to feel guilty about it.
There is also a difference in human beings making mistakes at the heat of the moment or under immense pressure to taking actions deliberately that would harm others in any way with the intent to cause harm or hurt to someone to fullfill your own needs or wants or sense of revenge....Anurags action to take over Bajaj's mansion and his publication business is one such act because he wants to hit back at him with a sense of revenge. But him slapping Prerna in swis I would take it as a mistake at the heat of the moment, because obviously it was shown the guy was not fully in his senses after Prerna ditched him at the alter without any warning and she ran off to honeymoon with the guy who has been hounding his business for the past few months.
Hence for me Bajaj is black not grey. He targeted and played with the lives of two people who have done nothing wrong to him ever in their life and he started hounding and stalking them and to taking over Anurag's business to ultimately destroyed their dreams of living a life together by forcing Prenra to deal with Anurags life in return for giving into Bajaj's wishes.
Both Prerna and Anurag has been stupid in their actions in dealing with things, Prerna more than Anurag. They rant and rave and cry....but their actions are never meant to cause hurt or harm to any third person. Their actions have hurt family and loved ones, but their intent has never been to cause harm. They are humble in the sense they know they are imperfect and makes mistakes and feels guilty about causing harm to innocents and tries to ammend their actions too....they don't consider themselves above others and don't consider their actions to be taken without scrutiny and not be called out for it either.
Now I admit, their are instances where their characters seem inconsistent...specially currently..both Anurag and Prerna's characters are not following their very basic traits to the T....BUT over all their main character arc is STILL being good and simple and humble human beings is irrefutable to me.
I personally don't like or root for 'grey' characters.....and most certainly have never rooted for a black character...
Yes these types of characters adds to the story immensely and brings in a certain complexity to the story, but the sad thing is so called 'grey' heroes of ITV have NEVER been redeemed fully and shown to undo or try to undo the damage they have caused to others once they realize their mistakes....
Their past actions are expected to be forgotten by the others they harmed and forgiven once the drama shows these characters have realized their way of thinking and living their lives have not been correct and change for the better from then on. STILL THEIR PAST wrong actions are not redeemed or the WRONGED ones are not compensated. THIS is why I don't like to watch drama's with 'grey' heroes....
