Massoud Hasmi

Massoud Hashmi, the graphic designer of Kabul Express and actor-cum-politician-cum-journalist from Afghanistan will make his debut on Indian television. He has acted in six films in Afghanistan and the first show on Afghani television, titled Palvasha (the rays). During the making of Palvasha, the Indian casting director Samir Banerji, spotted him and invited him to India. There is a second reason that brings Massoud to India. He seeks to bring the worlds of Afghani and Indian entertainment business closer; he is also armed with a letter from the Afghanistan Filmmakers' Union for the Indian Filmmakers' Association.

The 24-year-old actor first visited India as a journalist some two years ago, while his second visit was during the making of Kabul Express. In his third visit he is all set to try his luck in Bollywood and television industry. Massoud has also received the best filmmaker and best actor award (2006) in Afghanistan. The actor is ready to start his Hindi diction classes very soon.

Recently, Shreya Creations have approached him for a negative role. Said Massoud, "During the making of Palvasha, I found that Indians were not only professional but also extremely wonderful to work with. I am all geared to make a start in the television industry and prepared for the struggles as well."

He added, "Afghanis love Indians. There are over 3000 Indians living in our country. They watch Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi and Kasauti Zindagi Kay translated in Pashto. There is a huge audience for Bollywood films. The Indian actors are equally popular there."

Talking about improving the ties between the Afghani and Indian entertainment industry, he says, "I have got a letter from the Afghanistan Filmmakers' Union for the Indian Filmmakers' Association. The letter seeks to better relations between the two nations."

Said Pranshu Ghosh, assistant creative director of Shreya creations, "We will cast Massoud in a negative role in our next project based on Kashmir. We felt that his north Indian looks suited the character we had in mind."

When we asked Massoud if he was comfortable with Hindi, he replied, "My Hindi is perfect but I can manage to speak quite well. I sure with time I will perfect my Hindi diction. I am going to take Hindi diction classes very soon. My friends from India will also help me out. I intend to stay in India for the next 3 years. I am open to both positive and negative roles as long as they catch my fancy."

Massoud is keen on working with Shweta Tiwari, Smriti Malhotra, Aishwarya Rai and Kareena Kapoor.
