I&B Minister not in favour of TRP system in India

PANAJI: Union Information and Broadcasting Minister P R Dasmunshi on Friday disapproved of the current TRP rating system in India and said his ministry will be dealing with the issue soon.

"I am not convinced with the kind of TRP ratings done in India. We are going to address this issue soon," Dasmunshi said pointing out that the system does not provide a level playing field for many players.

Participating in the "India- the Big Picture" conference organised by Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) on the sidelines of International Film Festival of India (IFFI), the minister said that few thousand households shouldn't determine views of the country.

Stating that TRP ratings amount to "judging the mood of viewers across the country", Dasmunshi cited instances narrated by renowned TV actress Smriti Irani, wherein they had to alter the content of programmes to get the right TRP next week.

"If this is done then where is the creativity? These are the matters which are causing concern to me," he observed.

Talking about the electronic and digital media boom in the country, Dasmunshi said the boom should be supported by low-cost and well built theatres across the country.

Internationally renowned filmmaker Shekhar Kapoor and Information and Broadcasting Secretary Asha Swarup were also present for the two-day-long conference which will culminate on Friday.
