Chapter 9
Shruti sat opposite UD waiting for him to speak. Instead he appeared far more interested in his menu that he should be. She looked at her own menu, not really caring what she ate. One of us needs to speak, she thought, and say what? This was definitely new, she didn't really know what to say. I'm attracted to you despite the fact I don't want to be and the last thing I want is a relationship, but if I'm going to keep making out with you we'd better at least be dating. Somehow didn't seem the best conversation starter. She peeked over her menu at him. This would be so much easier if he wasn't so…… him, she sighed.
UD heard her sigh. Why wasn't she talking? Why did he have to be the one to start things? Why did it have to be so hard? This was the first time he'd ever had to make any sort of effort for a girl, it wasn't an experience he liked. You could always give up and move on. He'd thought about doing that but whenever he saw her that idea flew straight out the window, he just couldn't seem keep away from her. And there was the kissing, that was too good to just give up. She sighed again, he looked up at her.
"You're not being subtle there you know" he said
"Well, you're not talking. One of us needs to fill the silence" she replied, annoyance creeping into her voice
"Sighing is counterproductive" he told her haughtily "I just thought we should order first before getting into the big conversation you seem itching to start"
Shruti felt an overwhelming urge to smack the smug look off his face. What is wrong with me? I have to pick him. I have lost my mind, stupid Sameer must have taken it with him. She settled for kicking his shin instead
"Throwing around words like counterproductive is counterproductive too" she told him.
UD was still smarting from the blow to his leg. "OW! Was there any need for that? What is wrong with you woman?"
"YOU!" she growled at him.
"That's not nice, I might think you don't like me, despite the fact that you got all dressed up and came out on a date with me" he wiggled his eyebrows at her
"I did not make a special effort" said Shruti "and this is not a date"
"You, me, in a restaurant, dinner. What are you going to call it?" he asked, smirking at her.
"A negotiation" she stated seriously, but her eyes seemed to be smiling at him.
UD laughed, she really was unpredictable, who knew he'd enjoy being kept on his toes so much.
"What are we negotiating for? You should have told me, I'd have got a list of demands ready." He said suggestively.
He was turning on his charm, Shruti could see it, she knew why girls liked him so much. He was getting a little too sure of himself, she couldn't have that.
"I'll just bet. Don't worry I have a list for both of us" she teased back, winking flirtatiously at him.
UD was shocked. Did she just flirt with me? I think she did. This was new. But good, definitely good. He grinned at her until he saw the calculating look in her eyes. Uh oh, she was up to something. Quick, distraction, he called over the waiter to take their order.
Shruti smirked, that would teach him for being so smug with her. They ordered their food, and when the waiter left Shruti looked at UD.
"OK, now we talk"
"About what?" UD asked, trying to be difficult.
"About us" she said firmly, ignoring his tone
"So you admit there's an us?" he asked, smirking at her, enjoying her discomfort
"That's what we're talking about" she said smartly "Now pay attention, don't make me kick you again"
UD moved his legs under the table as far away from her as possible before he spoke again.
"Ok, speak" he ordered.
Shruti smiled, she'd seen him move his feet. Good, she thought happily, he knew she meant business. He looked so sweet when he way trying (and failing) to be authoritative,
"Aren't you going to say something?" UD startled Shruti out of her thoughts
"Uh.. say what?"
"Something about our relationship" UD winced at the word "relationship", he didn't do them and yet here he was bringing it up.
Shruti flinched at the "R" word too he noticed. That was odd, girls loved that kind of talk what was up with her?
"We don't have a relationship" she said.
"What's your deal? Most girls want relationships"
"Not me"
UD looked at her for an explanation and Shruti realised she was going to have to be honest with him.
"You know I'm divorced?" she asked him
"Yeah, I heard about that, but it's cool. I don't care"
"Thanks, but that's not it." Shruti continued. UD waited for her to finish.
"Sameer wasn't my first husband," she said quickly.
UD was stunned. She was married more than once. Who does that? Mother India and Dad Basu would be impressed. "Uh so how many times you been married?" he wondered.
"Only twice"
UD laughed "Only twice?! And you made fun of my dating history, at least I wasn't stupid enough to marry any of them"
He saw her face fall and was surprised at how bad he felt about it. He hated that he hurt her and couldn't believe he was feeling guilty about it. At least it felt like guilt, it was new to him. It scared him a little how much she got under his skin.
"I'm sorry. I didn't mean it. What happened?"
Shruti sighed, even now it was hard to talk about them, not because she still had feelings for either of them but she couldn't believe how stupid she had been. UD was right; she had been an idiot, but no more.
"I don't want to talk about it. It was a long time ago, I was young and foolish, and I had terrible taste in men" She said quietly "That's why I really didn't want to get involved with you."
"Hey!" said UD, offended" Don't compare me to the losers you married, I'm a good guy…Sometimes. Besides I'm not exactly happy about this either. Relationships are more trouble than they're worth. The longest one I've been in was 2 weeks"
"Really? 2 weeks? I'm surprised you lasted that long. If you're so against them, why are you here? No one's forcing you" Irritation crept into Shruti's voice again.
"Chill. I didn't mean anything by it. Just ….just this is a little new to me" UD tried to calm her down.
Shruti smiled, it seemed easier to talk to him when he was as unsure as she was. "I'm no expert either. Not the best of luck so far"
UD smiled back "So we just go with the flow see what happens. Let things lead where they may"
He was definitely laying it on a little thick but Shruti agreed. Neither of them knew what they were doing, may as well, just let things happen. That's exactly how you get into trouble, she reminded herself. Shut up.
"Ok, we go slow. No rushing"
"Deal" said UD holding out his hand. Shruti eyed it warily.
"Relax, we're in public, even I won't do anything. Unless you ask real nice" he winked.
She took his hand. "Ok. I'm probably going to regret this"
"No way. I'll crack before you will" he joked
"We're doomed, you're not even taking this seriously," she complained
"Sure I am. Don't worry so much, it can't be much worse than where we are now" he gave her a lop-sided grin.
She smiled back at him, caught up in his grin. "Fine, lets just eat"
He laughed, finally winning at least one point. They spent the rest of the time talking about other things, steering clear of the "R" word, knowing that would make things weird again.
They had a problem when he insisted on paying.
"It is not a date," she told him
"Yes it is, don't give me that negotiation crap again" he scowled
"But even if it was a date, I don't see why you should pay"
"Look" he said, exasperated "I'll pay this time and you pay next time"
"If we last that long" he added under his breath
Shruti glared at him "I heard that"
UD pretended not to hear her and instead paid the bill and escorted her out. He was surprised and grateful she wasn't being difficult about it but it seemed she was getting into the spirit of compromise. This might just work, he thought with a slight smile.
"I'll walk you to your car" UD told her
Shruti looked up I surprise " It's ok you don't need to"
"It's fine. It's what nice guys do. Or so I'm told"
"You are not a nice guy," she laughed at him
"I'm experimenting," he said, making her laugh more.
They carried on joking until they reached the car.
"Uh bye" Shruti said, suddenly feeling awkward.
UD bent down close to her. He was going to kiss her again, Shruti wasn't sure she was ready for that, it always got out of hand so quickly. She was surprised when he kissed her cheek softly. That's it?! What a letdown. What is wrong with me? I'm shameless, she thought to herself. She reached up to kiss his cheek, it was only polite after all. UD looked surprised, but he bent down again to kiss her other cheek, she responded in kind and the next thing Shruti knew she was pressed up against her car and kissing UD like crazy. He crowded in closer and she wrapped her arms around him.
How did they end up like this? UD wondered, he was trying to be the good guy. Yeah right, good guys don't stand on street corners doing this. Oh well, was never a nice guy anyway, he thought, moving his own arms down her back. Suddenly he stopped kissing her, Shruti tried to pull him back down.
"We're not alone," UD whispered
She snapped out of her daze and heard a horn and some whooping sounds, it appeared they'd attracted the attention of passing cars. Thank God it's dark, she though, getting really embarrassed. It got worse when she realised that somehow a couple of UD'S shirt buttons had come undone and one of her dress straps appeared to be slipping off her shoulder.
"Oh my God" she said, stunned.
"Yeah" UD replied, a little shaken himself. This was so completely out of control, he'd never been like this before.
"So much for slow" he tried to joke.
"We're on the street" Shruti said still bewildered.
"It ok, nothing happened" Shruti scoffed at him "Almost nothing happened" he amended
"I'm going now" she said, "We're not rushing this"
"Yeah" UD was unsure what else to say.
"Bye" Shruti said while trying to open her car door
"Let me" UD took the key from her and opened her door. He handed them back to her "I'll see you tomorrow"
Shruti gave him a confused look."We have work," he told her
"Uh…Yeah. The office" she remembered. "I'll see you then"
Shruti drove away feeling even more confused than before. She was in over her head, she only hoped she didn't screw this up too.
UD walked back to his car with a grin on his face. This dating thing wasn't so bad after all, and he didn't even have to be a nice guy. He couldn't wait their next date, he wondered what it would be like, knowing Shruti it would most definitely be unpredictable….
