CHAPTER 2
You are responsible, you are responsible for this, a voice shrieked through the air.
Bani woke up perspiring. She looked towards Aman, he was sleeping in the cot, oblivious to the world around him. He was sleeping on his stomach, with his mouth open just a little. She smiled. He was all that kept her sane all these months, her dreams left her drained everytime.
She signed, and Aman squirmed slightly in his bed. She gently patted him and walked towards the kitchen for a glass of water.
She stood by the sink and stared out the window. The darkenss outside seemed to comfort her a little. In light, the harsh reality of her life, teh accusations, the pain always flashed before her. She was thrown out of her house, they had given up on her, but somehow she couldn't let go of them.
Hello Bani beta.
Mr Walia, she said and turned around. Did you need something?
Mmm, he grinned and walked towards the fridge and pulled out some icecream.
Mr Walia, Krishna aunty has told you to avoid all this, aapko diabetes hain, she said walking towards him, with a frown on her face.
Arrey Bani beta, he said pulling out a bowl and spoon out for her as well. Sit with me, let's talk, a few bites won't harm anyone, he pleaded.
Bani tried to stay angry, but she couldn't help but smile at his childish behaviour. He grinned even wider knowing he had won this round and indicated her to join him.
They talked for a few minutes. He was about to take a second helping, when Bani gently grabbed his bowl and shook her head smiling at him. He made a sad face and then nodded his head . Good night Bani, he said and walked out.
Bani smiled and started to wash the bowls. Mr Walia was such an easy man to like. It felt like yesterday, when she had first entered their lives. They had insisted she stay with them, and that had been almost seven months ago. Bani had gotten a job as the head chef of a popular restaurant, and she ahd been doing fairly well for herself. Most of her money went to Rano's schooling, and the little she managed to save, she kept for Aman's future. The Walia's had often insisted that they would help her, but she refused telling them that they had already done so much, and she wanted to do this for her sister and son.
Krishna Walia was a gem of a person. She showered Bani, Rano and especially Aman with tremendous love. She was always happy and very giving and kind. But sometimes, she noticed her with a lost look. She missed her children it seemed. From what she could gather, the Walia's had two children, Jai and Anu Walia. Anu was married to a lawyer who was settled in the US, and Jai worked in Delhi. In all the time she was here, she noticed that he never came to visit and never understood why.
Bani turned off the light and proceed towards her room, she had long day ahead of her.
