Jai watched Bani sitting huddled at the other end of seat. She refused to look at him or talk to him. He gave up after a few seconds, smiling to himself as her childish behaviour. She looked too tempting with her dark eyes shimmering with anger and her lips pursed tight, a rose colour tinged her cheeks.
Bani was fuming inside herself. The nerve of him to bundle her up in his fancy car and then trying to sweet talk her. She will show him, she will make his suffer. Bani stared out of the window at the passing streets filled with people running around, cars wheezing by and horns blaring at pedestrians crossing the busy road.
Soon they were out of the central Mumbai and into the quieter suburbs. The streets were quiet and with just odd people walking around and some stalls still open for trade. Suddenly Bani spotted a guy waving his hands frantically, he was standing next to a car with its bonnet open. But it was the face of the woman in the back seat which caught Bani's eye. "Stop the car." she screamed. Jai's driver slammed the brake and swerved the car to a stop. Before Jai could say anything Bani was flying out of the car running towards the guy. Jai cursed loudly and told his driver to see where she was going. "Sir, she is running down the road. I think someone's waving at her." Jai got out and slammed his fist on the roof of the car as he saw Bani talking to the guy. He strode down, hell bent on breaking the man's legs for even looking at Bani. When he reached the car, Bani was already helping a very pregnant lady out of the car. "We have to help. She is going to have a baby, her car is broke down and they haven't been able to get a taxi to stop." Bani already started to walk towards his car without waiting for his reply. Jai mumbled, "She can't talk to me properly and now she wants me help her. I should just leave her with this woman and drive off."
The driver already had the car door open when Bani and the lady reached the car. Bani helped her in and made her lie down on the seat. "Breach Candy hospital," she told the driver and got in. Jai got in the front seat next to the driver and said curtly, "Now hold on Bani. Do you know how far the hospital is? Why can't we take her somewhere close by?"
Bani glared at him, "she needs to go to Breach Candy...now tell the driver to move on." The woman clutched her stomach and moaned, "please just take me to a hospital. I don't want to have the baby in the car." Bani held her hand, "You will be ok, just breathe like they taught you in your lamaze classes. Breathe." Jai watched open mouthedly as Bani took a deep breathe trying to get the woman to follow.
When the woman had relaxed a little Bani asked, "What is your name? I am Bani and he is Mr Walia."
The woman gave a smile, "Roshni, Roshni Sharma. I live in Bandra area. Was just on my way home after visiting my sister. The baby decided to come early. Oh God, I am two weeks early. My husband is out of the country on business."
She clutched her stomach again, "Oh no, they are too close, the contractions. I hope we can get to the hospital soon." When the contraction subsided, she looked at Jai, "Could you call this number, its my doctor, Dr Sheila."
Jai dialled the number and handed the phone to her. He gazed at Bani's face, she was nervous even though she tried not to show it. He couldn't but have a silent chuckle. Of all the nights, he had to be ferrying a pregnant woman to hospital, it had to be today. He better call his brother-in-law Adi before they sent out a search party for him.
"Dr Sheilla, Roshini. Look I am having contractions already, they started more than two hours ago. My car broke down but lucky for me Mr Walia stopped to help."
"Yes we are on our way. But what do I do if the baby comes before we reach."
"Ok." Roshni trust the phone to Bani, "She wants to talk to you."
Bani took the phone, "Hello doctor." She listened as the doctor gave her some emergency instructions. When the call ended she gave the phone back to Jai. "Could I have your jacket please."
"My jacket, why?" Jai asked already taking off his jacket.
Bani didn't answer but took the jacket and then carefully arranged it underneath Roshni body. Jai arched his brow, "You are going to use my tux jacket to deliver a baby. By the way how many babies have you deliveered?"
Already nervous, Bani said angrily, "Shut up. If you can't help at least keep quiet or swap with me. You help her if she decides to have a baby in the back of your car." Bani wiped the sweat formed on Roshni's face.
Jai took out a water bottle from the compartment and held it out to Roshni, "Water?" he asked gently.
Roshni nodded her hand and nervously took the bottle and raised herself slightly so she could take a sip. She gave the bottle back to Bani, who immediately gulped some down herself. When she saw Jai smiling at her, she snapped, "What? I can't drink."
Jai closed the bottle and said, "Why don't you just sit back and relax. We should be at the hospital soon."
Ten minutes later, Roshni puffed and screamed, "Oh...oh help." Bani who had her eyes closed, opened them and looked alarmed. "Ok, the doctor said to take deep breaths and not to push even though you may feel like doing so. So her we go..." Bani tried to even out Roshni's breathing, but it wasn't working as Roshni was now panicking. With every contracts she screamed and dug her nails into the leather seat of the car. "Oh its coming...help." She tugged at Bani's hand, "Do something...get the baby out...please."
Bani turned to Jai, "Stop the car and get in the back and hold her."
"Me! You are joking right?"
"NO! Get in the back and help."
Jai got in the back and helped Roshni up so she could lean against him. A little embarassed, Bani asked her to bend her legs so she could she if the baby was crowning. Nervously Bani lifted the bottom of Roshni's dress and looked. She almost fainted as she could just make out the top of the baby's head. She put the dress down and stared at Jai and stammered, "Oh what now...I can see...the baby's head."
"Now don't panic on me. I can't handle two screaming women at the same time. Take a deep breath and try to remember what the doctor said." Jai said in a calm voice.
Bani shook her head, "I can't remember. I can't remember." she wailed. The grip on her hand got tighter as Roshni felt another shot of pain. The pain in her hand shook Bani out of her fright. She laughed nervously, "Right...Roshniji do you feel like pushing?"
Roshni nodded her head, "I can't hold on much longer."
Bani looked at Jai, "How far are we from the hospital?"
Jai asked his driver. "Another 15 minutes sir."
"Can you hold for few more minutes?" Bani asked Roshni. "We are almost there."
Before Roshni could answer, she felt a surge of pain and she pushed hard as she screamed, "Noooooooo." Bani pushed her dress back over Roshni's swollen stomach. The head of the baby could be clearly seen now and knew Roshni wasn't going to hold out till they reached the hospital. Taking a deep breath, Bani said slowly, "Ok, with your next one push down, the baby doesn't want to wait by the look of it." In few seconds Roshni pushed down, this time digging her nails into Jai's hand. Bani nervously watched, "Ok the head is out, one more push and the baby will be out." Bani gingerly held the baby's head, too nervous to grip it tight. Roshni took a deep breath and gave a final scream as she pushed hard. The baby slipped out easily and Bani held it up. "Look Roshniji, its a girl...oh Jai. Quick tie the cord. The doctor said to tie the cord up."
Jai looked aghast. What was she asking him to do? Tie what up. Bani tried pointing at the cord. "Tie this quick with anything." Jai saw the umbilical cord hanging and with nervous laugh got hold of it and tied by ripping the pallu of Bani's sari. Bani put the baby lovingly in Roshni's arm. "She is beautiful Roshniji. Do you have a name for her?"
Roshni tired, with her face perspiring slightly from the effort, "No. We haven't thought about it. Thank you, both of you so much. I don't know what would have happened if I was stuck back there." Tears rolled down Roshni's cheek as she looked at the tiny body in her arms, her tiny black eyes, gazing back in wonderment. "Oh your papa is going to be so happy to see you."
The car pulled up at the emergency entrace to the hospital and a group of nurses and a doctor rushed up. Dr Sheila yanked the door open and pushed Jai roughly out. "Oh...oh dear...you delivered all ready. Let me take the baby and then the nurses can get you inside." Dr Sheila cut the umbilical cord off and wrapped the baby in a blanket and handed it to one of the nurse. She looked at Bani's face. "You did a good job. Thank God nothing went wrong." Bani stepped outside and stood a little uncertainly as the nurses crowded around the car. Jai stood a way off with his driver, on a cell phone talking.
Roshini was put on the stretcher and she called out to Bani as they wheeled her in. "Bani come and see me when you get a chance, I am sure my husband would love to meet you both. Mr Walia, sorry about your car." Jai just waved at her and smiled. He walked over to Bani, "I just called for another car to come and pick us up. We can't go home in that one."
Bani nodded slowly and then smiled nervously, "Sorry about your jacket."
"Don't worry, I have a wardrobe full of them. Are you ok? You didn't panic. For a moment I thought you going to..." Jai didn't finish but instead picked up the torn pallu of her sari, "Hmm, I think I will have to replace this one."
Bani blushed and tugged at the palllu, "Oh please don't do that. It's ok. I have lots of saris," she lied.
He let go of the sari, "But I want to. Won't let me give me another gift. Something to remember this night in years to come."
