'Pia! You must be kidding? I can't do it'you know I haven't done anything like that before.' Bani screamed at her sister Pia.
'Is this your sister?' Manish asked Pia, eyeing Bani up and down, his eyes lingering on her curves of her bre***s peeking out from the scoop neckline of her t-shirt. Flicking his rather long hair back, he said brusquely, 'She is perfect. The clothes will fit her to tee. Now be a doll and get her hair and face fixed up.' He turned sharply and walked away as Bani shouted, 'Hey you'what about asking me if I want to model your damn clothes!'
Manish ignored her question and walked off. Pia gave Bani a tug, 'Come on Di, you have no choice'don't let us down and remember this is a charity event'and what did you teach us? Charity begins at home.'
Bani found herself stripped of her clothes, garbed in a dressing gown, her hair brushed, tugged, pulled into desired shape required for the show, the makeup gal scrubbed her face squeaky clean with some foul smelling stuff and then plastered, according to Bani gunk on her face to make her look like a clown.
Finally when each of them was done primping her up, she was left to sit and sip hot tea, which somewhat helped her relax. She gazed at the unrecognizable face staring back at her. Was that really her? And how will her she ever get her hair to be normal again with all the stuff the guy used to get it into the weird shape. From the corner of her eye she saw Pia walk towards her.
'Wow Di! You look great.' Pia said and then leaning forward to her ear, 'I must say you are far better than Lina, the model Manish had in mind. Good thing she broke her leg and we got you. I think you are going to set the runway on fire Di.'
Bani screwed up her face and carried on sipping her tea. It was too stressful to think of walking out on the ramp half naked. She had seen some of the designs Pia had been working on'not her cup of tea she had thought at the time. Who were these dumb people who paid thousands of dollars for a dress that barely covered them?
XXXXX
Bani looked in horror at the two slips of materials in Pia's hand. 'I am not wearing that and going out there. I am not parading around in skin out there. God Pia, just think have you even seen me wear even a skirt. Get someone else to wear it.' Bani sat down on the empty chair and folded her arms tightly around he, lips pursed tight and glared at Pia.
Tears sparkled on Pia's eyelashes as her face crumpled, 'Come on Di!. You know these can only fit you. They are custom sized. Please Di don't do this.' Couple of tears rolled down and Pia sniffed before continuing, 'Di you know no one will bat an eyelid seeing you in this bikini. All those people out there are here because it's a charity event. Please Di.'
'Well I will put this on one condition.' Bani said defiantly.
'Anything Di!' Pia jumped at the words quickly.
'This is the last piece I model.' Bani gazed at Pia eagerly to see what she would say.
'Ok. Fine. But you will have to wait around for the auction.' Pia said unhapily.
Bani eyes went wide as she asked, 'What auction?'
'Well at the end of the show, some of the pieces modelled will be auctioned to raise money.'
'Fine. Let's get on with it. But this is the last time I am doing this.' Bani stood up resignedly and snatched the offending garments from Pia's hand and stalked into a room.
Few minutes later she stepped out with a wrap around her. Pia couldn't help but smile at seeing Bani holding the wrap tight around her. Pia walked up to her with a tube of glitter. 'Di you are going to have to take it off. I have to make sure it looks ok and I have to rub this glittering bronzer on you.'
'Good God Pia. Can't you just do with out plastering me with that stuff, I am modeling your bikini, not my body.' Pia just tugged the wrap off and looked at Bani. The black bikini with fine gold embroidery and crystals fitted Bani like second skin, it was definitely going to fetch big bucks at auction. She squeezed the glitter out and proceeded to rub it over Bani's skin. Manish appeared just as Pia wiped her hand clean. He looked at Bani and whistled, 'Honey you look good enough to eat. Are you sure you don't want to become a model. With your figure you could go places.'
Bani gritted her teeth and snapped, 'Why don't you try it Manish, parading around half naked and see how you like it.' Manish just laughed and circled his hand on his large protruding belly, 'Honey if I had your figure, I would be flaunting myself out there, especially today, when some of the richest men are sitting out there with there big fat cheques.'
Bani was the last one to model the bikini. She waited in a corner from where she could see out in the crowds. Most of the men just gazed admiringly at the model as they walked up and down the ramp. Suddenly her eyes rested on a figure huddled at one of the table and talking intimately with his companion. Both of them were very attractive. The man in his designer suit, with perfectly coiffured black hair, strong jaw line and generous lips. The woman was wearing a black off the shoulder gown with a glittering diamonds on her neck and ears. Her brown hair fell in long curls around her, her beautiful face was lightly made up. She wondered if they were both married. The woman was sitting rather too close to the man. And now and then one of them would touch each others hand lightly.
Bani jerked as the man lifted his head and looked straight in her direction. She felt blood course through her skin giving her skin a tingling sensation. There is no way he could see she had been watching could he? She slinked back further into the shadows. Few minutes later Pia came to get her, as it was her turn to model.
Bani gulped two or three breaths of air and then stepped out in the spot light. As soon as she looked towards the crowd, her eyes locked with the man. As if hypnotized by his glittering black eyes, she moved fluidly down the ramp, unaware of the comments she and her bikin generated. Cameras flashed, people overly feasted on her bikini clad body. When she reached the end, the man smiled at her, his white teeth gleaming in the dim room. He winked as she turned, making her blush and suddenly the daze lifted and she almost ran off the ramp.
Her heart pumped at alarming rate thinking about what just happened outside. Why had she stared at the man for no reason? Bani's thought were interrupted as Pia rushed up to her. Her face had a big grin and she jumped a little excitedly. 'Did you see Di? Jai Walia couldn't take his eyes off you. I knew the bikini on right body would create sensation. They are all buzzing about it. I can see few orders coming in before the night ends. Thanks Di.' Pia hugged Bani tightly. Bani couldn't help but be proud of Pia, she had really put hard work into this show. She knew this could open new doors for Pia and make her very successful.
Pia dabbed at her eyes with her fingertips. She linked her arm through Bani and asked chirpily, 'Are you ready for the auction?'
'No!' Bani exclaimed, 'Do you know how uncomfortable it's going to be to stand there while you people bid, it be like being in a cattle market.'
Pia kissed Bani lightly on the cheek. 'It's nothing like that. You are just adding a little bit of glamour to the auction. I must get a picture of you in this bikini as a momento.'
Bani groaned, 'No way Pia! Don't even think about it. I don't want any reminder of this day.'
Pia chuckled as they walked towards the stage. She lined up all the models with Bani leading them. On cue, she pushed Bani out on to the stage. This time Bani deliberately looked at the back of the hall, where faces where a blur. It was easy not to see eyes staring at her. She stood in spot and waited for the other girls to take place. She had no idea how long she stood there as she engrossed herself in blocking out all the noise and flash of cameras and most of all the feeling of prying eyes on her. When it ended she felt a pinch on her arm as the model before tried to get her attention, 'Bani they want you to walk up the ramp once more. You fetched the highest bid.'
Like a robot, Bani walked up the ramp stood the required seconds and then turned and walked back. She never once looked at the pair of laughing eyes that had been glued on her throughout the auction.
Bani and Pia stepped out in the street. The night air was hot and humid. Pia fished around in her bag for her cellphone and looked at the time. 'Di lets see if we can catch a taxi further down the street. Not much chance of getting one up here.' Bani grumbled, 'Pia I am dead tired. And it took so long for you pack stuff up. Couldn't you let all those other people to do it?'
'Di, those clothes are valuable and I am responsible for making sure they get put away safely. Manish would have my head if one piece went missing.' Pia linking her arm through Bani, 'I hope Manish gives me a bonus. May be we can buy a car, our own car Di.'
'Hmmm! I don't think we can buy a car yet Pia. We still have a little bit to the loan to pay off. I think few more months and we should be out of debt.'
'Ouff Di! We don't have to pay off the loan so quickly. Why don't we spend a little bit on ourselves. We never treat ourselves to a little luxury after working so hard.' Pia whined.
Bani couldn't help but smile, 'Pia! I promise the first thing we will do after we pay off the loan is to go on holiday.' They had only taken a few steps when a car pulled up and the driver got out. 'Mam!' the driver shouted, causing Bani and Pia to stop and look at him. The driver came around and handed a large bouquet of yellow roses to Bani, 'For you mam. Sir would like to offer you ladies a ride home.'
Bani looked at Pia, then at the roses and then at the car, a black Merc with dark tinted windows. Bani could not see who was sitting inside. Bani trust the roses back at the driver, 'Please tell your boss, we don't know him and we don't accept flowers, gift or rides from people we don't know.' The driver looked at her incredulously, how can the woman say this about his boss'everyone knew his boss'Jai Walia. 'But mam'mam'' the driver watched hapless as Bani pulled Pia along, 'Come on Pia.'
'Miss Dixit!' the sharp voice calling her made her stop and look back. Jai Walia stood few feet away, a smirk on his face but his dark eyes glinted with annoyance. 'Miss Dixit,' Jai Walia reached her in two strides, towering over her, he said with a little edge of hardness, 'I know we don't know each other, but I am sure your sister can tell you I am no stranger in the world of business and a well known by Manish. Please let me drop you and your sister home safely, it will be hard for you to get a taxi at this time of night.'
'Mr Walia, no thank you. I am sure we can manage to get home safely. There are two of us and will be able to make our way home somehow. Goodnight.' Bani gave him a stiff smile walked away. Pia whispered, 'Di. How could you be so rude to him? It was generous of him to offer to take us home.'
Bani pinched Pia's arm, 'Shut up Pia. You don't him and I don't know him. We don't know what he has up his sleeves, once he gets us inside the car.'
An uneasy feeling filled Bani as she heard soft steps behind her. And Pia said in a panic, 'He is following us Di, what do we do now?'
'Nothing. Just keep walking. Look across the road is the tea stall. We can do and wait there. He won't do anything with people around.'
It took them couple of minutes to cross the road because of speeding cars. When they reached the other side, they breathed with a sigh of relief as they saw Jai Walia get in his car. 'Thank god he is leaving.' Bani said happily. Fifteen minutes later they were still waiting for a taxi to stop, most of them had passengers and did not stop when they waved for it to stop. Tired of standing, Bani sat down on the floor. 'I am tired Pia. I think your idea of getting a car seems a great idea at the moment.' Pia gave her an annoyed look, 'If you had not turned down Jai Walia's offer, we would be home now.'
'Pia you know why I didn't take his offer.' Bani snapped.
'But di'' Just then Pia saw a taxi coming and she frantically waved her arms for it to stop. The tea stall owner laughed, 'You won't get a taxi here lady. They never stop at this time of night.' Pia looked dejected as the taxi sped by. She ground at the pavement with her heels. Trust her Di to be stubborn, if he had asked her, Pia would have jumped into the car, after all Mr Walia is well known. He wouldn't try anything on with the two of them.
Silently the Merc pulled up and Jai Walia stepped out. Bani glared at him, 'Stop following us. Can't you take no for an answer.'
Jai Walia glared back, 'The answer is no. I am not going home and spend the rest of the night thinking if you girls got home safely. Why don't you drop your high and mighty act and get in the car and get home.'
Pia had enough of waiting around, she pulled Bani up, 'Come on Di. We are getting in the car and going home.' She pushed Bani in back seat first and then got in and slammed the door. Jai Walia went around to the other side of the car and got in.
'Where to?' he asked as he buckled his seat belt.
Pia gave her home address and brief direction to the driver. Bani sat with a silent, fuming face, staring straight ahead. 'Do you mind putting on your seat belt Miss Dixit.' Jai drawled. Bani blew a puff of air out and snatched the seatbelt he was holding out and clipped it. Pia and Jai Walia talked with each other, Bani refused to be drawn into the conversation. Jai Walia looked at Bani's set face now and then and couldn't help chuckling to himself. When the car stopped at their apartment, Bani said a curt, 'Thank you,.' and got out. Pia reached in and shook hands with Mr Walia, 'Thank you so much for the ride Mr Walia. I hope we can repay the kindness to you one day.'
Jai Walia put on his most charming voice, 'You are most welcome Pia. I hope your sister feels the same way.' He fished out his business card and put it in Pia's hand, 'If ever you need some business advice, call me.' Pia blushed and smiled shyly at him before closing the car door. Bani was already waiting at the elevator impatiently at the staircase when she got inside. 'What took you so long? The elevator is not working again,' Bani moaned.
Pia ignored Bani's moaning and said dreamily, 'Don't you think Mr Walia is just wonderful. I think I am going to have wonderful dreams tonight Di.'
Bani snorted, 'He is not our type Pia. I am sure he has a girlfriend of his own class.'
Pia not at all perturbed, 'I don't think he has a girlfriend, I am sure one of the magazine said he unattached.'
'He probably indulges in casual flings, I am sure he doesn't even have to go looking for them too.'
'Di you are so mean. Can't you be romantic'don't you dream of a dashing young guy sweeping you off your feet?' Pia asked, giving Bani an intense stare.
Bani shrugged, 'I am being practical Pia. I don't dream of things out of my reach. And I am not looking for dashing man either.'
XXXXX
Pia opened the door grouchily, unhappy at being woken up by someone constantly ringing the doorbell. Where was her sister? She stared at the large basket of flowers trust into her face by delivery guy. 'Thanks!' Pia muttered as she got hold of the basket. She put the basket on table and picked up the card attached, the name of the card was addressed to Bani. Now who on earth would send flowers to her sister? Pia put the card back and returned to bed. She was still tired from the late night.
Much later when Pia had woken up and dragged herself out into the kitchen, she pecked Bani's cheek and asked, 'So who sent you those gorgeous flowers Di?'
Bani gave her a blank look. 'I thought they were for you.'
Pia gave an exasperated frown, 'Di did you look at the card? It's addressed to you.'
'Me? But who would send me flowers...it's not even my birthday.' Bani walked out of the kitchen and looked at the flowers. They were really pretty, colouful. She pulled the card out and looked at it, her mouth pursed in anger, 'How did he know where I live? She fumed. 'How dare he?' she spluttered. Pia took the card from her and smiled, 'Hummm Di. I think he likes...I think he likes you lot. And someone like him would have no trouble getting hold of your address. Are you going to call him and thank him?' Pia asked.
'No! I didn't ask him to send me flowers...remember we don't know him. The only think you know of him is what you have read in magazines or heard from people who likes to gossip.'
'Di. I can't believe you could be so hard on such nice guy. Let me get the business card he gave me. We can call him and say thank you.' Pia walked out to her bedroom when the phone rang. Pia picked the call up before Bani could reach it. 'Hi Mr Walia!' she cooed into the phone.
'Yes we got the flowers'
'No I am afraid she is not pleased. She is very upset.'
'Why don't you ask her yourself.' Pia smiled and handed Bani the phone, 'It's Jai.'
Bani shook her head but Pia shoved the phone to her ears, 'Talk.'
Reluctantly Bani said, 'Hello!'
She heard soft laughter at the other end, 'At least you said something. Pia tells me you don't like the flowers.'
Bani, 'I don't like receiving flowers from people I don't know.'
'But we do know each other a little bit. Remember yesterday? We met at the show. Must say you looked amazing modeling Manish's clothes. And the finale was worth the money I had paid to get invited to the event.'
'Mr Walia.' Bani said frostily, 'Thank you for the compliment, but I did to help my sister out. Please don't take our little meeting yesterday as friendship. I do not know you and have no interest in being friends with you. We belong to different level of society. I think it's best if you don't call here or send anything.'
'Ouch Bani, that hurts right in my heart. And I thought you were such a sweet person. Thanks for putting me in my place Bani. I am not sure though if I will stop calling or sending you gifts.'
The phone cut before Bani could retort. She stared at the phone. Pia who had heard everything in the kitchen sighed. She had no idea how she could get her sister to relent and not be so high strung about Jai Walia.
Two weeks later on Saturday morning doorbell rang. 'Pia get the door.' Bani shouted from the kitchen. Pia still in her nightdress trudged to the door and opened the door. A delivery man stood with a card and large arrangements of lilies. He grinned and handed him over to Pia. Pia closed the door and looked at the card. It was adressed to both of them. 'Di there is a card with your and mine name on it. Shall I open it?'
'Haan.' Bani answered.
'Di! Oh my God Di...its an invitation...to party.' Pia came rushing into the kitchen and thrust the card in front of Bani's face. Bani pushed the card away, 'Who is it from?'
'Guess Di...it's big affair.' Pia's grinned as she held the card for Bani to read.
'No way! No way we are going to his party. Who the hell does he think? Can't he get it...' Bani glared at the card as if she could burn it to cinders. 'Di...come on. I am invited too. Are you going to stop me from going?' Pia wailed.
Bani snapped at her, 'No, you can go if you want but I am not going.'
'Thanks di. I am going to shower and then go shopping for a dress.' Pia all excited ran off to her room.
Bani stepped up to lilies already arranged in a vase and fingers them, they were her favourite flowers, so white, so pure and viriginal. She held a petal in between her fingers, it felt soft and smooth. Trust him to pick her favourite flowers, he was determined man. Bani went back to the kitchen to finish off her chore and had soon forgotten about the card, the party. When Pia left half an hour for shopping and asked Bani if she wanted anything, she just waved Pia off.
Two hours later, Pia was modeling couple of dresses she had bought, trying to decide what to wear. Both of the short and much too revealing as per Bani's taste, but then Pia loved such styles. After eating a late lunch Bani dozed off while Pia settled down to paint her nails and toes and fuss about with her hair. The ringing of doorbell broke Bani's nap, she yawned and stretched as she walked towards the door. When she opened it, a large box was trust into her hand by the delivery man. He tipped his cap and flashed her a smile before walking off.
There was no name on the box and Bani took it into the room and opened it. She picked up the card lying on top of the tissue wrap. She opened in and read, 'For two lovely ladies, I hope you will wear the gift to my party. Jai.' In anger she pulled the tissue off and found herself looking at a pink sari, beaded with a swarovski crystals. She picked it up, it shimmered as sunlight fell on the crystals. She put it at a side and picked up the
black dress, a shantung silk creation, long and elegant. As she put it back in the box, Pia came out, hair rolled up in curlers and blowing on her nails. 'Di, did I hear the doorbell? ' Her eyes fell on the box and its content, 'Wow now what did he send over.' She gingerly picked up the dress, 'Oh...oh...divine. A Givency creation...they make beautiful clothes.' She held the dress up to her, 'This would look gorgeous...' Pia looked at Bani, 'Is it for you?' Bani shook her head excessively, 'No for you.'
Pia's eyes almost popped out, 'What do you mean? I don't believe it.' She picked up pink sari, 'Who's this for then?' Bani smirked, 'For you.' Pia picked up the card and glanced at it, 'For me...I am taking the dress, you can keep the sari.' Pia picked up the dress and as she walked away, she heard Bani say, 'You might as well keep the sari, since you are the one going to the party.' Pia turned and arched her brows, 'Di, you will wear that sari and go to party.' Bani just smiled.
At precisely seven Pia left for the party wearing the dress Jai had sent. She did not bother asking Bani again about coming to the party. Bani watched as Pia stepped intot he black Merc sent by Jai to pick them up, well he will just have to make do with Pia's company. An hour later, Bani comfortable in her favourite pjs, sat down with a large bowl of her favourite icecream to watch her favourite soap on the TV, Saat Phere. Ten minutes into the show, the doorbell rang. She put her icecream down and gave a sigh, who could it be now. Pia has her keys and she would not come back this early from the party.
Bani opened the door slightly to peek out but found the door pushed back. Jai Walia stood, in his tux, looking at her with his dark, brooding eyes. He looked her up and down. He stepped in and slammed the door, 'Go and put on the sari. W|e are going to the party.' Bani folded her arms and glared back and screamed, 'Get out! I not going to your party.'
Jai took a step menancingly towards her, 'Stop being so bratty(hmmm...we like her being bratty, right guys? And him too!)' He hauled her tight to him and proceeded to kiss her hard. When he let her go, Bani was gasping for breath and her face the colour of red tomato. 'You...you...' she slammed his fists against his rock solid chest. Jai just grabbed her wrists in his hand and pulled her arms up, 'Any more voilence towards me miss and I will make you answerable for it. Now get that butt of your into your room and change.' He growled in her face as he let her go.
Bani cast him a killer look. Her heart was pounding after his lusty assault. The nerve of the man, who does he think is...why won't he leave her alone.
Half an hour later Bani came out, still sulking, the pink sari draped perfectly and her hair pulled back in a soft bun. She looked at him, his eyes staring at her as she walked up to him, holding her pallu tight around him.
Jai pulled the pallu out of her hand and let it fall softly at the side and tugged gently at the bun and her black hair tumbled out. 'Perfect, now you look just perfect,' he said softly and he gently glided her out her apartment and down to his waiting Merc.
