Part One.

Bani stepped out of the elevator and headed for the empty corridor. As she headed for the reception area her stomach took a huge flip. At this moment she felt that she would have been better off if she had skipped that pancake breakfast that Rahul had treated her to. She knew that Rahul took full advantage of being her older brother and had conveyed her to join him this morning. Rahul had always been able to get her to do what ever he wanted. She also knew that her being a younger sister was a disadvantage on her part.

As she approached the receptionist a strong male voice called to her "Bani Dixit is that you?" Bani turned to see whom it was and couldn't believe her eyes of whom she saw. It had been years since she last seen Ranveer Bali. The last she heard was that he had gotten engaged to her best friend, Rano Walia. And even that was right before she left for India, almost two years ago. Times have changed but Ranveer looked the same. "Ranveer, it's so nice to see you" Bani said.

Ranveer asked Bani what she was doing at W&B CA. Bani explained to Ranveer how she just recently got back from India and how she felt about getting back to work. Bani was quite surprised when Ranveer told her that he was also an associated at W&B CA.

Ranveer told the receptionist that he would be more than happy to escort Bani to her Supervisor. "So, Bani which tyrant did they ask you to see" Ranveer chuckled.

"What?" she muttered "Don't tell me that you guys have a lot of slave driving supervisors here?"

"Don't worry they aren't all bad, some are even worst" he burst out laughing "Anyways who is the unlucky guy who get to have you as his associate"

"Ranveer, I'm not that bad. Any how it's some guy name Jai Walia and tell me seriously if this guy is going to eat me alive" Bani squirmed.

"Tell him your friends with Rano and he will let you off easy"

"Huh?"

"Don't tell me you don't know that Jai here is Rano's brother. Oh yeah I forgot that he wasn't around while our trio was in college."

"Here we are," he pointed to a giant brown wooden door that read 'Jai Walia'. She knocked on the door then she let herself inside. Behind a large brown desk was the tyrant that Ranveer mentioned, but the weird thing was he didn't look like a bad person. He had the nicest dark brown eyes that she had ever seen.

"So you are Bani Dixit. You know you are ten minutes late?" He said cutting through her train of thought

"Sorry sir I guess I got lost"

"Anyways let me show you where you are going to work" he said. She followed him and he lead her to a small office right beside his office and told her that she would be working there for the present. Bani stood at the door and studied the interior of her so-called office. "Don't you like it?" said Jai.

"It's not that" she said quickly.

She walked in and tried the chair for size to show him that she wasn't dissatisfied by the way her office looked. Jai let himself in and started to explain to her what she was to be doing. Then he just stood there studying her as if he didn't have anything in the world to do but look at her deep brown eyes. Since Bani's gaze was hesitated, he made way for the door and headed out.

"Oh, by the way Bani is a very unusual name. How did you get your name?" Jai said popping his head through her door.

"It's quite simple my mom thought it would be really cool to name me after something religious" He just stared so Bani added "It's actually Guru Vani spelt wrong"

"I see" is all he could say and he made way out the door. Bani just sat there until she heard the door to the office next door close. As soon as she heard that she let out a sigh and began to work.

Already she knew that she had her work cut out for her and it didn't help when her supervisor has some kind of dislike to her. Bani spent the next hour working through the stack of paper work that was left for her in her inbox by the former associate of W&B CA.

Bani spent the better half of her morning empting the contents of the inbox and trying to get them completed. She had accomplished that task and was about to step out of her office to see the tyrant for more work when she noticed that her office was just and ordinary office and could really use a personal touch.

Bani walked in front of her desk with her back facing the door and tried to visualize how it would look with her personal photographs hung right beside her certificates and the breathtaking painting of the Taj Mahal, which she purchased from Agra as her vocal point. Just as she took a step back the door opened and she dropped the stack of papers she was holding on to the floor.

"Sorry about that Bani, I forgot how scared you get when someone startles you. I know I should have knocked before I entered," said Ranveer with a smirk on his face.

"If you ever tried that one on me again remember that you won't get to see the light of day"

"Oh god Bani I promise I'll remember" he said as her opened his arms to give her a comfort hug. Bani accepted his hug and she started to remember the last time she felt this secure. But right before she could remember a voice from the open door said "Sorry for the interruption".

Bani turned her head to see who it was and felt the deep eyes of Jai focused right on her. At this point she knew that his disliking for her grew stronger then every before. Of course how could she forget his sister was going to get married to the guy she was hugging.

Before she could utter a single word. Jai started to walk towards her and then turned so he was standing right in the middle of her and Ranveer. He turned to Ranveer and said "Rano just called me and told me that she is on her way here and asked me to tell you that we will be having lunch together. I tried calling you but I couldn't get a hold of you" he paused and then he said again " You better hurry back to you office she is heading straight there"

Jai stood there until Ranveer left and the he turned to Bani and said "I see you are going to need more work to keep you busy" with that he left for his office. Few minutes later he reappeared with a stack of files that he handed over to her and showed her what to do with them.

When he left Bani made way to her desk and fell straight into her chair and started to think about what Rano will think about her when Jai tells Rano about her and Ranveer. She had left the country two years back to salvage her friendship but now even that wasn't possible. Oh well she told herself and tried to direct her attention to the files which were her next task on her to do list.

A few minutes later there was a soft knock on her door. So she asked the person to enter and she was quite surprised when she saw that the person before was none other than Rano. The two years really did wonders for her. Rano looked more beautiful than ever. In some ways Bani envied the women standing in front of her.

"Bani, don't look so surprise. You knew I come looking for you. Didn't you?" Rano said casually. "How have you been?"

"Much better knowing I still have my good old friend," she responded.

"Great you still feel that way about me. Hey how about some lunch?"

"Rano, it's only my first day, I couldn't possible step out of the office for lunch"

"Says who? I've already asked Jai and he thinks it a lovely idea. Your coming case close"

Bani felt that she needed to find a way out of having lunch with Rano. There way no way she could face seeing Ranveer and Rano at the same table. Too many think have been buried in the past that didn't need to surface right now.

All four of them walked to the little bistro on Main Street. Since Jai had already made reservations for the three of them it was not that hard to change the reservation to four. The bistro was quite even with its lunch hour crowd. The lunch that was served looked elegant. Bani was about to dig into her lunch when she spotted Rahul entering the little bistro with a woman who looked like one of his new model.

Bani felt that she should at least go and say hi to her brother and his new model so she excused herself from the table and made way to where Rahul was waiting.

"Hi Rahul, Nice to see you here" said Bani softly

The model kept a sharp eye on Bani and said "Rahul, aren't you going to introduce me to your lady friend" as soon as she said that Rahul and Bani both started to laugh.

Rahul stopped laughing to catch his breath and then turn to his model and said "Pia, I like you to meet my little sister, Bani and Bani, I like you to meet my new model, Pia Gill"

Bani couldn't believe the way the expression on the women's face changed from a fierce woman to a girl next door. She obviously thought that Bani was the women in Rahul's life.

Rahul and Bani started to chitchat about how Bani's day went so far, when Rahul told Bani that their father had called from London and was asking about her and wishes to speak to her. Rahul also warned that he wasn't in a very good mood so she better not put off calling him until later. Bani was about to say something to Rahul when Pia interrupted them and said "Rahul dear I think I see someone I know" pointing to the direction of Jai's, Rano's and Ranveer's table.

"Who Ranveer, Rano and Jai?" Bani asked

"Yes, that's my fianc, his sister and her fianc"

Bani and Rahul let Pia go and greet Jai, Rano and Ranveer. Then Bani turned to Rahul and asked his what was the real reason for their father to be calling. "Seriously, Bani dad just told me he wanted to speak with you" said Rahul.

She tried not to think about what her dad wishes to speak to her about. So she switched the topic of their conversation. "Rahul, I am quite disappointed in you"

"Soy, why so?"

"Parading around with Pia on your arms. For god sakes she is engaged to being married and her fianc is my boss"

"Listen, it not like what you think. She so attractive and I think she also finds me attractive and we like each others company"

"I wonder what Jai has to say about you too enjoying each others company"

"Oh come on Soy don't spoil it for me by telling Jay about me and Pia"

"I guess you should straighten up then" and Bani walked to her table to find that Pia now was seated in her chair. As soon as the two couples noticed that Bani was a fifth wheel, Pia got up and said her goodbyes and headed over to a table where Rahul was already seated. The rest of lunch hour went by without a glitch.

so im guessing Bani had a thing for Ranveer that was why she left and came back after two years hmmm so Pia is engaged with Jai 😡 im not liking that

Part 2

Bani was back in the safety of her apartment when the phone broke the silence of the empty room, Bani felt that her safety net was also broken. Upon answering the phone did Bani realize that her thought were practical reality.

"How dare you return to Toronto after all this?" the voice of her father yelled out at her. "Oh dad you can't be mad at me for returning to my life"

"Is this what you call returning to your life, Bani I thought you would have learned from the past?"

"Dad you aren't listing to me" Bani squeaked, "Things in the past will remain buried, but life has to go on and this is the only way I can let life go on."

"But being in the same city as them is not going to make it any easier"

After the usual arguing she got her dad to see her side of things. She got of the phone and decided that she had better get to bed before Rahul got home and made things more harder for her than they were.

It was bright and early when Bani woke up. She was really glad to find that Rahul had left for an early photo shoot and wouldn't be home until later that after noon.

Second day of work didn't sound that delightful since the first day didn't turn out as she thought it would. She got her self together and made way for work.

As she reached the main floor of her office building the smell of coffee hit her and it was then did she realize that she hadn't had anything to eat since lunch yesterday. She made a quick stop at the cafeteria on the main floor and ordered a toasted bagel with cream cheese and a large cup of hot steaming coffee.

Quickly grabbing her stuff she headed for the elevators. On any other day she wouldn't mind taking the stairs but she just didn't had any energy in her to do so today. In line for the elevator did she realize that Jai Walia was standing right next to her. So she turned and said good morning, he greeted her and said "Bani, I hope I am not working you that hard that you missed having breakfast this morning"

"Oh no, I just didn't realize I was hungry until I got here and smelt the coffee"

"You know you don't have to feel scared of me I am not out to get you or anything"

"I am sorry if I let on that I was afraid of you"

"I know what it is, did Ranveer say something about me being a ogre of a person? Rest assure that I am not like that at all"

The elevator arrived and they both got in the elevator and Jai pressed the elevator for their floor. Bani just stood there not knowing what to do or say. She knew she wasn't afraid of him but she was quite intimidated by his height of 6'2'' compared to her height of 5'3''. He reminded her of a giant for one of her childhood storybook. Well not exactly like the giant, a lot cuter and handsome than the giant. As the elevator stopped and the doors opened they both waited for the other to get out first. After a few seconds of waiting Bani made way out of the elevator and Jai followed and then he passed her by and headed straight for his office. Bani slowed her pace and then slowly headed towards her office next to his.

Upon entering her office she saw a new stack of papers, which has a POST IT on it letting her know what was to be done with the stack of papers.

Bani sat down on her chair and then moved the papers to her inbox and started to work on yesterdays work. Just then the phone on her desk rang and Bani answered it.

"Care for some breakfast, Bani?"

"Oh hi Ranveer, huh?"

"I knew that Bani Dixit always skipped breakfast and thought since I also skipped breakfast today maybe we could get some breakfast together"

"Well, Ranveer I just ended picking up a bagel and some coffee from the Cafeteria downstairs"

"Yeah right Bani, you just don't want to have breakfast with me"

"I'll tell you what Ranveer why don't you pick something to eat from downstairs and then come up to my office so we could eat our breakfast together" Bani said trying to please Ranveer

So now Ranveer was on his way to her office. Ranveer knew that Bani had some weird perception about him. Ever since she had left for India she had no contact with him or Rano, which was quite odd for Bani, who had loved to be in touch with her friends. He remembers the summer when Bani had gone to London to spend time with her father. She called everyday to talk to him and Rano. He wondered what had happened to that Bani.

Ranveer entered Bani's office to find her sitting behind the huge desk looking over the new budget reports that had been issued by the company; he assumed that Bani was trying to catch up on what she had missed.

"Sup Bani?"

She looked up and said "Oh hi, you caught me off guard again."

"Well at least this time I brought you a present," he said as he gave a fresh cup of coffee just the way she like it. With that he sat down and they both enjoyed their breakfast together.

I guess Pia behaviour is not out of norm.. the same old Pia.. Leaves Jai shattered and broken and Bani has to pick up the pieces..

there seem to be so many unanswered questions. i wonder what the situation is between Rano/Ranveer/Bani.

Part 3

A few weeks passed and she started enjoying her work and enjoyed working with Jai Walia. As a matter of fact she was quite sure he too started to enjoy working with her also. She had now realized that the dislike look that Jai wore was nothing more than a tactic to make her feel intimidated by him. Well it soon wore off and now she was much more relaxed when she worked with him.

She was just about to get to pack up and head for home after a long Monday when the door to her office opened and Jai came in. "Bani, you are going to end up just like me, putting in extra hours even when no one tells you to" he said.

"I thought I stay back and finish the Copperfield account. It's year end is coming up soon and I just thought I finish it now when I have all the time in the world" Bani told him

"Oh the joys of being single" he said while he cracked up

She waited for him to finish laughing and then she asked, "How do you manage to put so much time at the office when your wedding date is coming up soon"

"You don't know Pia do you? All I have to do is give her my Credit Card and she takes care of it all. All she wants me to do is show up at the temple for the wedding" he chuckled then he fell silent and said "I can't believe it that next-next Saturday is my wedding day and it feels just like yesterday I was trying to get Pia to agree to marry me"

"I bet that didn't take long," she said laughing

"Are you kidding me it was the hardest thing I ever had to do, but I managed. Plus it was expected our parents have been friends even before we were born and I guess it just fit into our parents plan when we started to see each other than we shall marry one day" he paused the said " well it's getting late I better see you home"

So now Bani was on her way home with Jai. When they reached her place she got out of the car and looked up at her apartment window she saw the light on and the she looked around the parking lot and saw that Rahul's car was in it's parking spot and had a feeling that she shouldn't invite Jai for coffee. But before she could say anything to Jai, he got out of the car and walked towards her and gave her, her purse and said "Bani, it's getting quite late and I don't think Rahul would understand what I am doing here so late so I better go" and with that he got back into his car and waving good bye he drove off into the night.

Bani headed for her apartment that she shared with Rahul. She sure hopped that Rahul didn't see Jai drop her off. If he did he would have created havoc. She reached her apartment and was about to open the door when she heard a women taking with Rahul. Bani thought that it wasn't like Rahul to bring women home. Well it was her home also and she be damned if she let Rahul bully her out of her own home.

She open the door and called out to Rahul " Hi Rahul why are you still up?" but as soon as she saw who was next to Rahul the joy of catching Rahul red hand faded. "Hi Pia what are you doing out here so late" she asked
"Bani is that how you are to behave" Rahul said while raising his voice

"Pia I am sorry if I sounded rude to you" Bani said as she faced Pia. Pia accepted her apology and turned to Rahul and said, "I think you should tell her"

"Rahul, what does she want you to tell me" Bani said before Rahul had a chance to say anything.

"Bani I think you should sit down" Bani did as she was told and then began to wonder what could it be that might caused her shock but Rahul started to tell her something before she asked why she should sit down "Bani you know that Pia is supposed to get married to Jai Walia next week. Well things have change and it not going to happen."

"Rahul what are you saying, are you trying to tell me that my boss does not want to marry Pia because if that's so I can guarantee you that it not like that."

"Bani stop interrupting me and listen. I never said he doesn't want to marry Pia. I am pretty sure he does. It's just that well Pia can't marry Jai because she and I are already married"

"Rahul what in the world are you talking about? You and Pia are married. How did this happen and why did you let this happen? You know better than that," Bani yelled at her older brother

"Bani what did I say. Listen to me before you start calling me every bad name in the book. I never meant for it to happen this way" he turned to Pia and continued " I guess Pia and I never though that we could end up falling in love when we started to see each other out side of work" he paused "in case you are wondering we started to see each other way before she was engaged to Jai. She told her family how she felt about marrying Jai but they kept forcing her and telling her that doing that was the right thing to do. She even felt that she should talk to Jai and tell him our story he was sure to understand but her family again got in the way."

Pia took Rahul's hand and then said, "We had no other choice but to get married with out my parents consent. Do you remember the day when you saw us at the bistro I believe it was your first day of work. Well we were planning to elope on that but when you told Rahul about how you were working for Jai and it was you first day of work we decide to put off our wedding until you were well set. You must know we couldn't put it off any longer than this" she walked towards Bani and sat next to her and said, "I hope you can understand that we didn't commit a crime or anything like that. We love each other and this was the only way we could be together. I hope you aren't too mad at us for it."

"Well, I am quite disappointed that I missed out on my older brother's wedding. But I was wondering how are you going to explain this to dad. I am sure he is going to end up yelling at me for this even though I had nothing to do with this"

"Oh Bani stop being crazy. We already spoke to dad right before you came home and he doesn't hold you responsible for any of this and he is quite happy that I finally found someone to share the rest of my life with. He plans to be here as soon as he can and told me that he is going to speak with Pia's parents about accepting our marriage" Rahul explained

"This isn't fair big brother you get off so easily" Bani wined

"Bani, I guess it's the magic of being married, dad couldn't get mad at me in front of my wife could he" you know what you should find yourself a guy to be tied down to before dad show up her" he joked

"Rahul I am going to kill you" she joked back

All three of them sat down to a very late dinner of take out pizza. Once they were finished with their dinner Bani cleared up the table and told the newly married couple that she better get to bed since she would have to go to work the next morning.
